I just set up a 5 foot wide by 4.5 foot deep by 2.5 foot tall area for vegging from seeds for a soil grow. I have about 10-12 seedlings now in that space

I currenty have in the vegging space the following

2 6500K 85 watt cfl(350 watt incan equal) 4200 Lumen output
2 5000K 55 watt cfl(250 watt incan equal) 3600 Lumen output
2 48" fluro 2 bulb fixtures(4 bulbs total) with 40 watt 6500 K GE daylight bulbs at 3050 lumen each bulb.

My figures show around 27,800 lumen in a 22.5 square foot space.

Is that enough light fro the vegging stage, should I add more and what kind?

I will be purchasing a 600 watt hps for flowering in a 5 foot wide by 4.5 foot deep by 5 foot tall space. Should that be good for 6 plants through flowering, or should I try a 1000 watts instead. any help/suggestions greatly appreciated. Heat could be a small problem but planning on getting an econocool tube and using a rotating fan. some of you regulars please give your opinions. This site is so informative and everyone seems truly helpful.

In a 4.5x5 a 1000w will be the better choice. You could even go 2x1000 or 2x600 in that space! :D

Here's a space that's about 4.5x5.5 with a 400 and a 1000.

Heat shouldn't be a big problem, especially with a cooltube. Hell, this garden has a heater in it.

Sounds good mr. trout... if you can manage the heat, i agree with bud luv.. go with the 1000..

Mr. LUV...

your plants are either over ir under watered.. can't tell.. they look good.. but just a bit droopy..

cheers

Thanks for the comment GK.

They're in a constant drip setup with hydroton rocks, is over-watering even possible in that configuration?

Those pics were taken a few short hours after transplant from a different room, from MH to HPS... They were definitely shocked a bit. Could this have been the reason for the droopy leaves? They look a bit perkier now.

Thanks. The space is in a basement and I am currently having to run a small space heater as it is open on one side. Plane to enclose that shortly. Those cfl are huge like 11 inches long and super bright. i think they will work nicely for veg. The day to day growth is crazy.

is the following correct to calculate amp usage.

watt/volts=amp draw

a 1000 watt mps would draw 8.33 amps.

I only have one circuit in that room and it hasa 20 amp breaker, so trying to figure if I need another line.

15 amps is ok for 1000watt hps... so 20 should be FINE for your light plus fans and other goodies..

cheers...

Yes, mr. luv... it is possible to overwater with your set up.. But your hypothesis sounds GOOD... it probably was a little transplant shock.. can I see new pictures :)

2 5000K 55 watt cfl(250 watt incan equal) 3600 Lumen outputOther than these bulbs, looks good. 5000K is in the blue/green area, light in this area is just about useless.
