I just bought some legal herbal blends from my local headshop today. First time trying them and I'm not expecting anything spectacular, but it was worth the just under $15 to indulge some curiosity.
Anywhoo, when I bought it today the guy at the shop was saying that some other frequent customer of his managed to quit smoking, and he attributed it to the herbal blends. So perhapse smoking that stuff instead would be a good alternative while you're quitting. I got the "buddha's blend", so I'll tell you later today how it is.
other than that, here's a few suggestions:
1. Don't tell yourself or anybody else "I quit smoking". You have to commit to the ideology of "I don't smoke anymore"
2. Remember when a craving hits that it's not permanent, and remind yourself of that. You don't have to resist, you just have to resist for 20 minutes or so (or however long it takes for the worst to pass).
3. You may go cold turkey, or you may get help from meds and patches and the such. but whatever you do, don't do what my stupid friend has been doing. Every so often he just arbitrarily decides to quit smoking, and doesn't buy any patches or anything, instead he "weens himself off" by smoking just 2-3 cigs a day. I've watched him fail with this over and over and over, and he refused to do another method. Don't fool yourself into believing that a few cigs is "weening yourself off" because it just keeps reinforcing the mental state to keep smoking. If you really have to indulge, use a vaporizer, take a patch, even smoke some shisha in a hooka (has about 1/3 nicotine of cigs). JUST DON'T SMOKE CIGARETTES. and remember that the worst of the withdrawl (is supposed to be) 18 days.
4. The smokes aren't your friend that you have to say no to. THEY ARE YOUR ENEMY. You hate them, you are disgusted by them, and don't let your brain bullshit you otherwise.
You have my compliments for quitting Masta. Tobacco is one of the worst drugs out there, if only because of the incredible addiction. It's funny that the DEA's criteria for making something illegal (I may be a bit rusty on this) is 1) it's potential for addiction and abuse, 2) it's harm to society, and 3) harm to the individual. Apparently tobacco covers none of these.
You have my support and possitive thoughts, don't give up on this; it's only 1 month of feeling like shit for a lifetime of better health and not funding the government-approved corruption.

Sucks you started in the first place. See if one of those patches work :p. I don't know much about cigs and nicotine and I dunno if those patches work or not but try to just use marijuana as a substitute. I mean I don't see how that could fail. You're still smoking, still getting an effect. And the good thing is the marijuana lasts longer.

Great suggestions mrdevious! It is hard to quit, but I did it twice (because I thought I could have a cig or two now and again after 10 years!) and hope never to again. Ride out the cravings because they will pass- run around the block if you have to, that used to work for me! As time goes on you will not crave it so much, you just have to remind yourself of that. Stay strong!

You'd actually go through all the trouble of quitting just to start again? A question comes to mind..... WHY!?!? That stuff is horrible on your body and gives you a huge chance of getting cancer if you don't stop at some point. Besides, it's not like you'll just die 10 years ealier, dealing with all the emphazima, bronchitis, running out of breath really quick, smoking through holes in your neck.... you know all that fun stuff; it's not worth it.

do you really want me to explain to you exactly why i smoke?
if i do, it will probably cause
a) a huge argument
b) a bunch of questions that i dont like answering
or c) nothing

I quit the cigs about a month ago. I'm 23 and I had been smoking since I was about 11 (the shame...). I've had a year or two in between that I've managed to quit but I'm convinced that this is it. Smoking cigarettes for more than half my life surely wasn't a good thing. I read Alan Carr's book 'easyway to stop smoking' and despite being a complete cynic about this kind of thing, I found that it helped a lot. I'm just trying to see it as a positive thing, which it is. I don't stink any more and I'm saving cash as well :)
i would find a replacement like broccoli or heath bars.

i smoked for a whole year and decided to stop and went cold turky, didnt have a single craving since.. but i have smoked a few cigs here and there, only because i either one had sex, smoke HELLA bud and just felt like having a cig for good ol times... i went from a pack a day, to like a cig a month.. if that
i love how i have an addictive personality, but i was never addicted to cigs.

Mrdevious is throwing out some good knowledge. If you have any friends that smoke, see if you can convince any of them to quit with you. Then you form a "support group" where you help each other to quit from planning activities to help get through some of the moments of weakness to being able to call someone up and say "Hey I'm craving a cig" in order to have them tell you that you don't need it..

i went from 20 a day to 5 a day and im 4 days in
try doing things in its place
my friend suggested i chew toothpicks..it works kinda
i notice its more of the activity of moving your arm..having it in your hand..sucking in and blowing out rather than a hardcore chemical craving..
its an activity..i quit drinking alcohol 3 and half months ago and i did that like it was cake..cigs seem more difficult to me..and i was drinking just under a liter of 80 proof each day..
ease out and find other healthy or potentially non-harmful activities to take up the time that would be spent chaining..
its hard lol

OK, I'm a former heavy smoker, started at 14 or 15, can't remember. Smoked 3 packs a day at 18. Quit the first time in 1991 for most of the summer. Was in college. Went to a party, smoked one cigarette. Was a smoker again.
I quit again the next spring, and that was it for like 12 years till I was in a gnarly programming gig and I thought I was going to have to divorce my wife, so I smoked again for a bit. Then I quit. I ate a lot of sunflower seeds, the ones with the shells.
But hell, now I chew once a day, except at work, when I chew more, but I can feel that wanting to leave my body too, as I could keep em in all day before and now they just get gross really soon, like way too soon, and when smoking was taking it's leave of me it felt the same way...
Just believe you can do it and you can do it. Nicotine is a water soluble molecule meaning it will pass from your body within a few days and after that it's all just a mind game, no more real cravings.
It is doable, you're not the only one that has done this.
Good luck, the internet is way better than cigs anyway.

To comment further, I have used the Commit lozenges in the past and those things are just minty enough to not spit out b/c they taste like minty shit, but they give you that sweet nicotine that you are craving, but creating this weird negative association with it at the same time. I used the lower dosed ones 2mg, and I couldn't finish the box, they were so nasty. Didn't chew for like a year, till my job started to totally suck (bad boss, long shifts, bad assignments and so on)...

Mr. Devious has solid advice
DO NOT underestimate Nicotine and its ability to fuck with your mind.
I tried to quit twice (LOL how can you quit twice?) and failed because the bottom line was I wasn't prepared. I am usually very strong willed but quitting fags tested me.
If you want another good reason to quit - learn more about Tobacco companies and what they do. The practices of the industry are enough to make anyone sick. If you want to support that (right up until it kills you) then those fat fucks are laughing all the way to the bank.

Save cigarette butts from say, a week or so. Put them in a jar. Put water in the jar. Stick it under your sink. Whenever you get a craving for cigs, open up that jar and take a hefty whiff of it. You won't want to smoke.

Hey man...first off it ain't easy. I've been smoking close to 20 years now, and I ain't 35. About a year ago a friend suggested that I switch to natural tobacco cause ain't got all the chemicals. So i got some organic, additive free American Spirit tobacco, threw out the papers they came with, used my good ol' alternative smoking papers.....Smoking DeLuxe....they are thin man! Any way enough bout the paper, but that tobacco I'm still smoking. It's not like I crave smoking anymore, but I just have one when I want, when I'm relaxing...sort like some desert after dinner. Before I started smoking this stuff, I had been smoking 2 packs of Marlies a day for years...now a pouch a week. Going back to the paper, I heard that a lot of the chems that make you addicted in the first place are in the paper.... Any way man good luck...at 17 if you have the gumption to ask about quitting kid your way ahead of most of smokers....now I'm not talkin' bout the green...no sense in quittin that. Quit smokin and don't ever start....Peace :rastasmoke:

Try a nicotine inhalator, worked for me. I packed in tobacco in 1999 after 15 years of addiction.

go to the place where you buy your squares and ask em for a bag of "Kites". They are about 1.75 and you can roll your own squares, tobacco and papers included. Theyre great for broke days and you wont smoke as many, theyre a pretty strong turkish blend, but they do the trick.
