Some interesting reading i came across. Apparently you are required by law (in some states) to buy and afix a tax stamp on your weed. And if you don't they can bust you for not doing so.

pulled this from norml.org

No taxation without representation? was the rally cry of advocates of American independence in the eighteenth century. Today, tens of thousands of cannabis consumers utter a similar cry over the selective and inappropriate enforcement of illicit drug taxes.

In twenty US states, those who possess cannabis or other illegal drugs are legally required to purchase and affix state-issued stamps onto his or her contraband. The total cost of the tax is generally determined by the quantity of contraband possessed. Unlike typical criminal statutes prohibiting the possession and sale of controlled substances, drug tax stamp laws primarily assess financial penalties on the defendant for noncompliance. On occasion, criminal sanctions may also be imposed.

Although nearly half of all US states have marijuana tax stamp laws on the books, few citizens observe them. Most individuals are unaware that such laws exist in their state; others fear that complying with it will incriminate their behavior. Because of this widespread noncompliance, drug tax stamps ?? unlike so-called ??sin taxes? on alcohol or tobacco ?? do not collect state tax revenue at the customer??s ??point of purchase.? Rather, the legislative intent of drug tax laws is to impose an additional penalty ?? tax evasion ?? upon drug offenders after they are arrested and criminally charged with a drug violation.

In some states such as Georgia, failure to comply with the state tax law may result in a nominal misdemeanor penalty. However, in other states such as Minnesota, failure to comply with the state??s drug tax law may result in a defendant facing an additional fine of up to $14,000 and seven years in jail.

what a useful law.

Is this a result of how they started to outlaw the weed?

I believe they started with heavy taxation. So is that law still in effect?
Or totally unrelated

It a loop hole that they can use to fine you big time if you do not report your sales, is you sold weed, which if you did report you would be busted for selling. Kinda the same way they got al capone. They couldn't bust him for murder or anything to they got him for not paying taxes on the income. If they can't get you for selling then possesion with out a tax stamp is a fine and a crime.

Course it could always be leading towards legalization of cannabis. . . .

actually i believe the stamp was created as a loophole to ban weed the government created the stamp making it legal to posses cannabis but never set up an office or branch of government to sell them to the public. so yeah it is legal to posses as long as you have your tax paid stamps but you cant buy the stamp anywhere

Yea thats the way the government outlawed cannabis....they require you to have a tax stamp (that doesnt exist) to legally posses weed. Another funny fact is that in order to get the stamp you need to have cannabis and if you already have the cannabis your getting arrested lol.

Had it partly right,
When this politician got to be head of ATF (forgot what it was called then, 1930?) he was looking for a way to get the machine guns out of the gangsters hands without the federal Gov. having to get in it, so they made up a " Machine Gun Transfer Stamp" or machine gun stamp. Never existed, but it made it lawful to own, sell or transfer a machine gun without this stamp ( that did not exist )
This worked well, so this suit decides the he'll try it out on cannabis, there were NO laws against it then and the Feds. had no interest in spend money on outlawing a " Weed " . So without this stamp you are behind the same Law as the machine gun, but in doing this, it allowed each state to chose wither it would make these stamps, allowing each state to Govern this law.
Now I've seen some of these stamps, Real, don't know.

They could tax the shit out of it, and make millions, if they legalized it. Unfortunately, I'm imagining that it would all be beasters sent from canada, lol.
