A friend told me that the silver gift wrap is the same material as mylar. Anyone hear this? Does the silver gift wrap have the same reflective properties as mylar?

Thank you for your time.

Mas o Menos.... It will really not make that much of a differece in your yield... especially if your lights are at the correct distance from your plants...

I would bet Mylar is a lot stronger and will last much much longer..

You can pick up mylar at wal-mart in the camping section. They sell it as "emergency blankets". Like $1.50 for a shit load of mylar. Only problem is it is really thin and tears, so if you plan on stapling it, put tape over the parts you are going to staple first.

Yes, but I already have the gift wrap .... will it work?

Thanks

Oh wow:jointsmile: ..... I did a google search on mylar and the different color gift wrap is mylar as well! Would green or red be better than the silver?

What do you think? Would that reflect the light and give a color the plant needs?:stoned: I'm sure it will be on sale for half price after Christmas ..... comments?

Thanks.:rastasmoke:

Silver would be the best since it would reflect all light. Red or green would only reflect partial light, and you definitely wouldn't want green. Plants don't absorb green light, they reflect its, which is why they look green

I didn't know that ..... I learned something new again today! Thanks

Interesting. When you first suggested about the different colored mylar, it made me think of color spectrums...

would blue mylar be better for veg and red for flowering...?

But then splifted said that it would only reflect part of the light...good point...

I wonder...

FOOD....

....for thought.

I think it's experiment time. :D Any people out there with a physics degree that can give some input?

I bought some cheap gold gift wrap and on the back it is silver. I already have mylar so i wont be using the gift wrap, but i thought it looked very similar.
It is a lot thinner and more see through than mylar. I think it would work with a couple of layers. It would be cheaper but mylar would still be better, last longer and be easier to put up.
We may have found the perfect seasonal getto grow material. Better then tin foil and cheaper.

.

Lol, do a bling bling gold room :D

I doubt the diferent colors of mylar would do much good, isn't that just different dies?
The point of different colored lights is that the colors are used as a measurement of different heats and wavelengths.
I really don't think purple mylar would give off UV light, for example.

Yeah baby ..... I paid $3.10 for 55 sq. ft. .... plenty to line my grow area. When Christmas is over I'm going to check for the half price sale on mylar gift wrap!:rastasmoke:  :stoned:

That's probably it...wavelengths and heat doesn't change when it reflects, does it???

Anyway, I don't really care for gold, but 'my' growroom is lined with platinum...bling! :pimp:

That stuff [gift wrap] is too thin. Try wiping down your growroom after a pollination incident...I will give you $5 if you don't tear that gift wrap. Hey, that would be enough to buy 55 sqft of it! lol

I usually don't do males ..... I keep them far away and kill them when the time is right. The only reason I have males .... all upstairs .... is because I'm going out new strains .... something I haven't done in years.

But if it does tear .... no problem .... put up some more ... if I get some on sale at half price .... I'll be set for a good while. That 5 bucks will cover 3 55sq ft rolls! :madnoel: :bonghit:

Right you are, Miss. Right you are.

I'm still curious to find out if faithless was right in his debunking of the colored mylar theory...I'm going to research it..........someday.

GrowRebel, seems like you like the smilies as much as I DO! :D:D

Okay kids .... I put up the gift wrap mylar ... here is the picture, but it got all crinkled .... it doesn't have to be smooth does it? Don't know why it got crinkled .....

So what do you think?

So what do you think?Looks good! Crinkly doesn't matter too much down low, and up above looks good enough. Smoother is always better, but crinkly in mylar is like 85% refelction as opposed to 95%? something like that. Foil loses a LOT of reflectivity crinkled, but not mylar. I use & reuse silver gift wrap to line my grow areas.

"Space Blanket" is good, too. I couldn't find it - wrong time of year - but found the gift wrap easy enough.

As far as colours go, coloured mylar only reflects the portion of light that it's colour is. The rest gets lost. So less light. Think about it. Coloured mylar will work, but not as well as silver.

Another cheap - usually free - grow room liner is advertising posters. Like the big beer posters the liquor stores throw out every other week. Or movie posters the theaters throw out. Whatever. Not the front, the shiny white back! Almost as good as mylar, better than flat white paint.

Great! I had white paint, but it seems brighter with the mylar. I guess because it is so thin it crinkled. But still for the price and the refective properties it's not bad for the poor grower like me. Thanks for the info.

Hee hee .... More picture you say! ...... well ...

Here are some links to the thread where I builded a new 150W HPS .... I added it to my flower level ... I put up a picture of the lamp and one of it mounted .... doing a fine job assisting my 430W HPS.

Guess what? ..... I'm seriously thinking of coughing up the doe for some 2 mil mylar from ebay

Well I sold a little of my lady to invest in some 2 mil mylar. I figure it would be worth it to do this. I shopped around of course .... have to make what little funds I have stretch ... I found 2 mil mylar at the e bay store 54"x25' .... it will cost me $26.10 to the door. The next cheapest price for that was $33.44 so I figured I got a good deal.

But the mylar gift wrap is still a good idea .... especially if the person was going to use foil as a reflective. My gift wrap mylar will do the job until the thicker mylar arrives.

I will post a picture when I get it up.

yummy pics of your light... the plant looks GREAT...

A hood for that light would reflect a lot of LUMENS downward..

or even better, you could hang the light vertically between 2-4 plants...

side lighting is fantastic

Hi Everybody
I got the same idea when I seen the wraping papper myself. If you hold it up to the light you can see the patter on the oppsit side. The wraping paper is mylar BUT it is very thin.I got some card broad from the new refr.box the new refr. came in and use some 3m spray glue .I spray some on the the cardbroad and mounted the papper on it.After the glue set I cut the broad to the size I want and put it on the walls with thumb tacks,The bigger thumb tacks. If it only lasts one grow the $5.00 for the glue and 6 rolls of grift wrap is the cheapest I have found.Well thats' my take on the grift wrap.
Peace and Happy New Year

crinkly mylar on your walls can sometimes reflect the light better is what i heard

No that's not true according to this information .....

Mylar:

A highly reflective polyester film that comes in varying thickness, the most common being 1 and 2 mm thick. The 2mm thick mylar while not quite as durable as the foylon, is fairly rugged. The 1mm thick mylar tears fairly easily, so taking it down for cleaning is quite difficult without damaging it in the process. Both types of mylar are able to reflect approximately 92-97% reflective, giving it the potential to be more reflective than foylon, but because foylon is more easily cleaned without damaging it as well as it being harder to crease, foylon usually ends up being slightly more reflective. Important to note is that mylar reflects radiant heat energy just as well as foylon (around 85%), so proper ventilation is necessary if mylar is used in your grow room. Attaching this to walls can be done in a similar fashion as foylon, and the same caution should be used to avoid creating hotspots in your room. The 1mm thick mylar stands a fair chance of being creased or ripped in the process unfortunately, even if Velcro is used to attach to the walls.

This is the reason I decided to get the 2 mil mylar ... with the white paint on the walls, I'm getted no better reflectivity .... I figure it will pay for itself with the next harvest.

crazywill....

..... after you glue the gift wrap to the cardboard did it crinkle? If not then that's the answer to prevent crinkles thus making it an excellent reflective alternative for us poor growers.

use any giftwrap that has a shiny iside the outside color doesn't matter
cause you only want the clean mylar
