View Full Version : Regional Stereotypes (International Posters Please!)

So I was wondering what your regional stereotypes and predispositions are.

Example: I live in Maine. We think that New Jersey is gross. We think that people in the southern states are raging lunatics. We think that Boston, MA is a party city.

I'm very interested in what international posters have to say as well. :)

alot of people outside of the north west think that alot of liverpudlians are thieves, or are more likely to be. which is an outdated 80's stereotype

Im from the south, and around here people think that WVA is a bunch of uneducated hillbilles among other things you guys shuold know the jokes, and they think people from the north are stuck up, rude people. And around here (NC) they think Va and Wva is the same thing which really bugs me cause Im from VA.

I dont think like that but alot of people here do. I still dont understand how you can lable a whole state, race, or country based on a small population that they have come in contact with.

I'm from Texas...a lot of people around here would not be opposed to Texas being a Republic (independent from the USA) rather than a state. This desire kinda causes us to have contempt for outsiders, and perhaps a bit of fear as well. It is appropriate to label anyone outside of Texas as a "Yank" or "Yankee." We generally view all people from other states in this light. The only exception might be folks from Louisiana, and more specifically those from New Orleans...some people would rather they go back to Louisiana rather than stay here as refugees. I have heard them called "Thugs" and "Crackheads" among other things.

And internationally, we see the French as Socialist Bastards...but that might be a consensus throughout America. Also the phrase, "Bomb Canada" is normally not considered absurd...although I don't know what the reason for this is.

We're just discussing the prevalence of stereotypes in different parts of the world. Turning a blind eye to a problem may be convenient...but bringing these stereotypes, most of which have little or no truth to them, into a public forum is the first step to dispelling them.

New Jersey here. Our reputation is not entirely deserved. Yes, central NJ has a high-percentage of industrial zoning, but its a very important state economically, and the most densely populated (14 million people). I live in northern NJ, which is very green, (no pun intended) with forests, little stores, nice sidewalks, all that suburban crap. NJ's bad reputation is 99% hype.. most people who go TO nj rather than THROUGH nj usually enjoy it.

The people are assholes, but hey-- i have about 3 friends anyway for that very reason. But i must say- The proximity to Canada and NYC make for a nice variety of smokage.. even though its overpriced. But hey, thats amerikkka, right?

I am also from Texas. This thread worries me on a number of levels because I'm not at all sure it helps shed light on these prejudices and will help in dispelling them as much as it simply gives them a voice, as Skink postulated. It's for this reason that I'm seriously considering closing this thread. I intend to think about this for a bit longer first, however.

I also feel compelled to comment because I've lived in Texas all my life and never once heard anyone in my 45-year acquaintance express a desire for it to be a Republic. Similarly, I've only heard people from the northeastern U.S. referred to as "yanks" or "yankees" and not people from other geographical areas. My family is from Louisiana a generation or so ago (north Louisiana, to be specific), and so it's important for me to point out that not all hurricane refugees are thugs or crackheads, and for that matter, not all of them came out of New Orleans.

There are Texans, and I'm proud to be one of them, who've traveled widely around the world and who work hard not to say disparaging things about France or Canada or other places that we've been lucky enough to visit and enjoy. At the moment, I'm finding it much more difficult not to disparage the culturally insensitive attitudes of some of my fellow Texans. . . .

At the moment, I'm finding it much more difficult not to disparage the culturally insensitive attitudes of some of my fellow Texans. . . .

Don't worry Birdgirl...I do not share all of the opinions I that I "shed" light upon. From my perspective...which may be rather limited having only lived 19 years...you cannot deny that people are EXTREMLY proud of our great state...I would press you to find another state who has a well organized independence movement (http://www.texasrepublic.com/) like Texas does...while it is not an overwhelming force, it is widely recognized. I have known a couple people who have gone as far as renouncing their American citizenship in favor of the interim Republic of Texas which currently exists. While I would not go as far as denouncing ties to America, if a revolution occurred my allegiance would be to my country...TEXAS.

And you don't think all the folks up north should be or are sometimes referred to as Yankees? Consider it's definition as provided by the American Heritage Dictionary (http://www.answers.com/yankee&r=67):

1. A native or inhabitant of New England.
2. A native or inhabitant of a northern U.S. state, especially a Union soldier during the Civil War.
3. A native or inhabitant of the United States.

Americans outside of Texas fit two of these definitions really well...especially if you consider my previous Independent Texas comments. I have heard Yankee thrown around in reference to folks outside of Texas many times. I am a student at A&M and can recall very well an instance in which my tenured history professor referred to "everyone north of the Woodlands" as Yankees...which is even broader than I had previously mentioned.

Do you remember the recent election when Kinky Friedman called the refugees "thugs and crackheads," it was pretty controversial but many people did concede that a large rise in crime could be accurately attributed to the addition of refugees from Louisiana and to a smaller degree Mississippi. Even former first lady Barbara Bush was quoted as saying:

"What I'm hearing, which is sort of scary, is that they all want to stay in Texas. Everybody is so overwhelmed by the hospitality. And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway so this (chuckle)--this is working very well for them."
I am sympathetic towards them, I was in Galveston when Rita was due to hit...I was evacuated and treated very hospitable along the way.

As for the French...is there something wrong with telling them that their socialist system is broken? Is there something wrong with fearing that the severe economic effects of their government might spread to America...or even worse TEXAS? I know that you appreciate their rich culture but you must admit that their growing 9% unemployment rate is dangerous to the entire world. And you also must take note of there stageringly low productivity standards (http://www.timesizing.com/1vacatns.htm) which are seemingly unimaginable from mine and many of my fellow Texans' points of view. While we are working hard to send our tax dollars to every country on the planet France is on vacation...likely spending the Iraqi oil for food money they illegally obtained.

Oh damn...I spilled beer on my keyboard. What is the harm in this discussion...I don't know if I will ever get much of a chance to go international as you have, I see this as an opportunity to see other people's point of view...I'm sure your interested to see how the rest of the world might view us Americans. :)

I must say, Kiefboy, you're a persuasive person. And you can be very articulate and persuasive, which is impressive. Yes, I know we Texans have a lot of pride in our state. That much is very true. And as for the other stuff, I'm going to give it some pondering time. I know you're not the only one who believes what you do about France.

I often have found myself believing you have a future in law and/or politics, Kiefboy. Do either of those areas interest you? I think you have an aptitude.

I know much of the rest of the world believes us to be aggressive, arrogant war-mongers. But among this stoner community, I think people are more tolerant of us. I liked the way you responded, and your ability to do so diplomatically has encouraged me to leave this thread open a while longer to see what plays out. (Also, I feel sorta under the weather tonight and mostly just want to go to bed.)

I'm from West Virginia, probably one of the most stereotyped states out there. Cue all those cute jokes everyone likes to tell. Haha, but really.. there's a lot of people here who don't really take kindly to 'outside folk' from other areas.. I'm not like that, but a lot are. It's a pride thing, I think, especially in the older generations.

West Virginia is a laid back, slow paced state. Communities are close-knit, and well.. I've heard people say 'if you're not from WV, you wouldn't understand.' And I think that's true.. WV isn't like many other states. If asked, people here don't tell what city or town they are from, rather people say "I'm from Lincoln county." And I never really noticed that until in my WV Gov't class I had this semester in college.. we went around the room and told everyone where we were from. A few out of staters, but every single person from WV, except for 2 people, said they were from "X County."

And what I'm going to say next doesn't necessarily reflect my own opinions of others from diff. areas.. just a general idea of what people in WV think. A lot here think the ones north of us are obnoxious, loud, and rude.. A lot don't understand the fast-paced lifestyle that so many in the larger cities have become used to.

People here don't really have a lot of stereotypes of the South. Many in West Virginia like to say they're from the South and the represent that to the fullest; aka, what you'd call a redneck. But news flash. Rednecks are in every state. :)

I don't know.. I'm afraid this thread will turn into bashing on others regions. What I think would be better is just to talk about your region how it really is, and maybe put some of those stereotypes to rest. *shrug* It'd be nicer.

People are people. It really shouldn't matter where you live. You cannot define someone by where they live. Its a huge generlization (sp?) to make judgements on someone based on where they live! I personally refuse to let stereotypes get in the way of my views people! I hate stereotypes and I allways will. By all means I am not saying this thread is suporting the use of stereotypes, but it is endorsing them....

Big disclaimer, I love all you Northeast types equally, no matter how funny you talk, lol

I live in Massachusetts.
We think that Jersey is the garden state where nothing grows. And the turnpike is an ugly wasteland.
We think Connecticut is the most boring state in the 50, and that if you live there you're either filthy rich and boring, or you live in New Haven and have to spend your day dodging bullets.
People from Maine talk funny. And the only employment in the state is fishing for lobstah, or logging.
Vermonters are a bunch of wierd hippies and/or backwoods survivalists with advanced degrees and no electricity or running water.
They think we are a bunch of silly flatlanders who only go to VT to ski or pretend to fly-fish. And we have no idea how to train a rabbit dog.
Rhode Island... wait, where is that again? Oh yeah... Providence is there. great party town. But the rest of the state.... big mystery. Quahog, anyone?
New Yorkers are obnoxious and drive too fast and send their kids to college in Amherst with a $40,000 car that they got as a present for even getting accepted to college.
Sorry guys.

As a Marylander, I still don't understand why outsiders love DC so much (better museums in Baltimore!), Delaware people are quirky, Pennsylvanians are odd (their roads suck), most of my state LOVES Canadians; we don't have anything bad to say about NJ.

We have all types of people in our state- surfers, hillbillies, ghettos, liberals, conservatives, hippies, businessmen, and we all seem to get along fine.

European countries are held in good regard in my family; and British colloquialisms are so bizzarely awesome. Bollocks.

People from the north are sheepshaggers

People from Edinburgh are junkies.

People from England...well they are just wankers :p (although that one really just stems from football rivalry we don't really hate the english, except maybe Jimmy Hill)

The Welsh are taffys.

I suppose you could also say that people from N.Ireland are protestant loyalist Rangers fans, and people from EIRE are catholic republican Celtic fans.

Italians are poser

First I would like to say that I feel that grose overgernerailizing of any one person based on their place of origin is wrong. I find that there are open-minded people and closed-minded people everywhere. There is some truth in every stero-type, however, some are vestigages from previous eras.

I am from the western sububs of Philadelphia, otherwise known as the main line. it is a very interesting place to grow up, as it is halfway between philly and Lancaster, home to the Amish community. one think i notice about how people from my area are treated is that people in NY think we talk with a southern accent, and people from DC think we speak with a northern accent.

Some of our views of other areas is that nobody outside this area can make a good philly cheese steak, or drive, although we drive like crap in other states, it has something to do with completly different road design, i still dont understand the roads in NJ, thank god they are getting rid of those circles,
pretty much anyone west or south of DC are southern hicks, and blame bible belt mentality for our current international 'sittuation,'
although they fail to realize that anywhere west of pheonixville pa has a small percentage of the population that has at least one confederate flag,

Most of the common view point of people i talk to in this area believe that the rest of the world thionk that americans are fat, lazy slobs, which to a certian percentage is true, however, there there is a much larger percentage of the population in the states that are over achievers that think that they are too fat, when instead, if they were to loose 15 more lbs, they would be considered anorexic.

We gennerally see Brittish as having bad food, although McDonalds does nothing for our reputation. French are cheese munching, wine swilling, surrender monkies... that drown their food in mayonaise. Germans are over anal, leather fetishists.
Italians are just crazy.

As far as the money thing is concerned, anywhere with vast suburban areas will generally generate a lot of overworked bad parents, trying to make up fro their bad parenting by spoilling their already unsupervised kids, but thats a story for another thread...

There's not a lot of Californians, as like a smaller state, where peoples ancestors have grown up there since way back when.

We don't really have an identitiy.

Everyone from New York is gangsta, gay, or in the fashion industry.

No you dont. Anyone who says they dont have any prejudices are lying. It's part of human nature to have prejudice, it's a survival instinct. The trick is realizing that these prejudices exist and using your better judgement to see beyond them, not ignore them completely, because that's impossible.
But as for my personal prejudices which I can say thanks to the wonders of internet anonimity:
I think that Europeans are full of themselves
In particualr, the brittish and french and the germans are just wierd.
Jews are assholes unless you personally know them (but they have good weed)
Blacks try to hard to be "cool"
Mexicans are to narrow minded
I dont know many Arab people but they all seem to caught up in their own little world to be realistic.
And I think white people are God's chosen race and will inherit the earth. Just kidding, I think white people in general refuse to step out of their comfort zone no matter what the consequences of staying in the zone are.

Boston is full of Irish people.

...
This is actually 100% true... Boston and Holyoke MA have the 2 biggest, most active Irish communities in the States.
And it makes for one holy hell of a music scene... If you are ever in Boston, go to Inman square and listen really hard... there's almost always a live band somewhere! I play Irish fiddle myself and try to get out there as much as possible.

Different locations means different attitudes and upbringings. Some if not most regional stereotypes are plausible and in most cases true.

For example, Melbournians are far more fashionable and better looking than Sydneysiders. Myth Confirmed. :p

I live in California.... the land of mix.

Everyone is different in California that you never know where anyones from.

There's not a lot of Californians, as like a smaller state, where peoples ancestors have grown up there since way back when.

We don't really have an identitiy.

It's pretty chill and everybody just does their own thing.

Let me tell you.

Next door to me is a Vietnamese Family, the other side is a Chinese Family, next to them is a Mexican Family, next to them is a Black Family, next to them is really weird white people, and next to them is Mormons. :D And I am white.

I don't know how you describe the typical Californian, except everybody AND their mom is getting stomach bypass surgery (stomach stapling) to loss weight.

I don't really know what that has to do with the topic but oh well....

...it has everything to do with the topic..dude....you nailed it...

Bostonian: "You have a funny accent, where are you from?"
Me: "Minnesota, originally"
Bostonian: "I'm sorry"
Me: "Have you ever been there?"
Bostonian: "No"
Me: "I'm sorry"

That about sums up what I think of my home and what others think of my home.... "cows, colleges, and contentment"

lol

And if you disagree, then good for you.

Spoken like a true prejudice...

Presumeably you have to know a whole heap of people of different ethnicities personally before you can generalise them altogether. Otherwise, what exactly is prejudice based on other than your knowledge of popular prejudice? Blacks try hard to be "cool"? Because they're in a lot of hiphop music on TV right?

No, because there's this group of these ghetto black kids at my school who walk around like theyre the shit and talk brag about how fucked up they are. White people do the same thing, but it's just for attention. It seems like black people do it as a status thing. Now, I know plently of intellectual and genuinely good black people who are some of the most realistic, down to earth people in the world, but it just seems like their definitions of what's cool is so far from the reality of what should be comsidered cool it amazes when the streach themselves to confor to that level. I dont know, may it's because their ideas of whats popular are so far removed from but anyway, that's just what I think when I see these rappers getting famous for making crappy music and when I see this douchebag ganster kid come up to me and tell me out of the blue that he once got cut in a knife fight and that his mom's an alcoholic and expects me to be like "oh my god youre such a hard ass! I wish my life was as fucked up as yours!" I realize I'm kind of rambling but whatever, I felt I needed to validate some of my opinions.

Well. Here in Cork City Ireland. We think:

Everyone in Dublin is a gimp.
Anyone from Limerick will stab you.
Anyone from Kerry is a sheepshagger married to their brother.
Everyone from anywhere else in Ireland is a cultchie.

And how Cork is the real capital city of Ireland, and how the real hero's of Ireland are Corkonians and how we have the best sports teams, athletes blah blah.

In Cork city.
A norrie (north sider) will rob you.
A south sider is posh.
errr, all i can think of.

Now, for me being born in Dublin, and being brought up mainly in Kildare. I think it's all a load of balls and most people from Cork are up themseves. Lmao.

(No offence world)
Most of Ireland thinks:

Americans are fat.
English owe us after 800 years yadayadaya.
Protestants are tight asses. Usually called "Basil" lmao.
Refugees are getting too much in this country.
Eastern Europeans are taking our jobs.
Germans are robots.
Chinese make good curry chips.

My apologies to anyone that may take offense to that. Not my own personal beliefs.

I think a lot of Ireland is still only getting used to other cultures and races living here. :o

From Los Angeles

I see all kinds of different people, I know people from all over the fucking world.

I am not a racist, but I make fun of my friends because of their race because it's all in good fun and if you cant take a joke then too fucking bad you pussy!

From my experiences, alot of the stereotypes are true, or at least seem to be

Mexicans steal
Black people try to be all hard and shit when they wear expensive clothing and have bling bling or w/e
Asians are smart
White people dress nice, are tanned (fake or real, doesn't matter), dye their hair, spend most of their time at the gym, and try to copy the other races in a desperate attempt to have a culture
Gay people are very trendy

The majority of people I know hate Texas for numerous reasons, and European people are pretty much always welcome in LA

In my fullest, most honest opinion, you will be welcome by everybody in LA if you wear nice, expensive clothing and spend alot of money on dumb shit. Happens to me all the time.

Can you tell me why? I am a proud Texan. I don't understand why people have a dislike for texans. Personally I think we are really friendly. We tell stories, we lie alot in them too. We drink and party and aren't afraid to get down.

I don't have anything against Texans, but stereotype is that they're hicks, arrogant, overly proud of being cowboys, think that just because they are a big state that makes them cool, butcher the English language with shit from a redneck dictionary ( I admit I do hate that, but Texas isn't the only one) and just the typical southern stuff...
