I used to take care of my hair, but i've just let it grown out in the past couple months... and now my friends are telling me to get back to my old self and start to style it again... but i want to get dread locks... nice fat dreads that i can just tie up and forget about. but could i pull it off?

asian hair sucks because it's just straight, no kinks or texture or anything. it's boring.

edit: i just remembered the reason i started this thread. i was ripping my billy when i singed 1 of my hairs coming down from my fringe. and then i thought, shit how much of my hair have i accidentally singed while i was completely baked.

Ponytail. No bangs. Highlights. The most time I ever spend on my hair is braiding it into 2 long pigtails and slapping on my tweed Kangol. It's cute. But honestly I have no patience for styling it!

i dont even know what the "gimme a 2' or 3 means, in relative to how short it is. my whole life whenever i get my haircut, i always tell them regular when they ask, and they just cut it. its been almost 2 yrs since my last haircut though, so its long as shit right now. i use a head band to pull it back a little so my hair isnt always in my face(pisses me the fuck off at school and work, or when its windy). its actually a beautiful december day here in MD, so no headband.

Closed blade back and sides (shortest cut without shaving) and a short trim on the top. Shorter than an army cut.

i have long straight hair (waist length), and i just keep it in a ponytail.
I have it braided once in a while and wear pigtails.
It's my freak flag man.

My wife, Dao, whom was Vietnamese, had long beautiful straight black hair.

braids, always in braids. I think i'll take em down today though and get some more friday or next week, i havent rocked the fro in a while.

Damn i forgot the orginal reason why i posted. Asian guy you can get dreads, it might not be easy, but if you stick with it, and keep them taken care of they will lock really nice.

Therefore look really nice. Don't take care of them from the get go you might as well cut it off now. Dreads are high maintance for a bit, but after that you wont have to do much. The only sucky thing is you cant wash that shit until it locks. IF you do it a natural way it wont be too big of a deal cause it wont stink.

How are you planning on starting thm off

I'm too impatient to grow my hair long but i'd love to have long hair like david gilmour used to. Or some cool dreads. But, for me hair is too much of a hassle, i have to have it short.

"Some of the worst mistakes in my life have been haircuts."

I'm in need of a trim, but I say "to hell with haircuts!"

For some reason, I REALLY don't look forward to the akwardness that is sure to ensue after I sit in that high-chair. I'd rather just let it grow.

Right now, it's basically just hair, and to style it, I dry it and shake my head a couple times, and I'm good to go. ~

it is my understanding that rastafari people think it is disrespectful for a white person (or asian in your case) to have dreads because the point of dreads is being natural and not taking western things such as combs to your hair..seeing as how a white person (or asian...lol) has to create dreads, it defeats the purpose..

I had jawline length hair until I was 15, then kids told me to cut it, so I did. I shaved my head from age 15 to age 22. For the last 2 years, I haven't gone to see a hairdresser. It's just past my shoulder blades, parted in the middle, and is long. I love it this way.

I have been thinking about getting dreds myself, because I would look hardcore with them, but if I do get them done, I want them done right. Not those cheap ass corn roll dreds kids get, but the real deal. I know a guy who gets his hair done and his dreds are nice. They cost him $180 to do  and he has to go back every few months to get them redone, as your hair grows out. That shit cost a fortune man, and takes a lot of hair care.

dude, that guy is getting ripped. you dont need to do anything to get dreads, absolutely nothing. just dont wash it, comb it, brush it or anything and it will grow out dreadlocked. seriously, i knew a guy that had dreads hanging past his ass, he's had them for 12 years and this is what he told me and it works. i dont go in to see anyone at all, i just do what he told me to do and my hair is dreaded to the scalp w/o spending a dime. plus it cuts back on the cost of shampoo and conditioner and all that.

Dude, that's gross! That's one, dirty, gross way to get dreads, but his are clean, and he washes them daily so his hair doesn't stink, and isn't so greasy. If I stopped washing my hair my head would itch like crazy, and I would have dandruff coming off my head like snow. :p

No thanks. If I want them, I'll ge them done right by seperating the hair, combing the hair upwards, using honeydew wax, and rolling the hair, done the real way.

Dreadlocks Myths
All dreadlocks are dirty.
Dreadlocks are only dirty if you don't take care of them and wash them. Not washing dreadlocks is the best way to ruin dreadlocks. You should wash your dreadlocks at least once a week.
You can't wash dreadlocks.
Not washing dreadlocks is the best way to ruin dreadlocks. You should wash your dreadlocks at least once a week.

Anyone with dreadlocks is dirty.
Not true!! Dreadlocks need to be washed at least once a week.
Not combing your hair is the only way/best way to make dreadlocks.
This is called the Neglect method, this is how cavemen made dreadlocks, by just not doing anything to their hair. Thank the Lord we have found new ways to make them because this method take at least a year and the hair doesn't even look like dreads during the time, and many people who have made dreads this way have ended up with such severe dandruff cases they had to cut their dreadlocks off and start over, usually with the backcombing method.
Wax is not a natural dreadlocking product.
Wax is probably the most natural product you can use on dreadlocks. It comes from bees that are from nature.

Backcombing is not natural.
Backcombing is just about the most natural way to make dreadlocks. Anyone who tells you this doesn't know much about dreadlocks.
Only black people can have dreadlocks.
Obviously the person who told you this has never see anyone who is Asian, Indian, or Caucasian with dreadlocks. Dreadlocks actually look very nice on Asian, Indian, and Caucasian. Many people believe that dreadlocks actually were first wore by the Asian Indians that crossed over from Asia and Europe to Alaska and Canada. Dreadlocks were also wore during Biblical times by John the Baptist and Samson. Dreadlocks were also worn in the 1400-1500's by Asian Emperor's.
Nice dreadlocks are high maintenance.
Most dreadlocks are not high maintenance. The only kinds of dreadlocks that are high maintenance are dreadlocks made from dread perms. Dreadlocks made with the backcombing, twist and rip, twist and pin, neglect, and brush rubbing methods are not high maintenance at all.
The neglect method is the only way to make natural dreadlocks.
Not true at all. There are many other methods that are natural, such as Backcombing, Twist and Rip, Twist and Pin, Twisting, Dread Braiding, and Brush Rubbing.
Rubberbands break the hair.
False. Rubberbands hold the hair together while the dreadlocks are forming to keep the dreadlocks from falling out. So many people and so many sites wouldn't recommend them if they didn't do such a great job.
Dreadlocks damage your scalp.
Dreadlocks do not damage your scalp. In fact your scalp never even knows you have dreadlocks, because the hair starts to dread about an inch away from the scalp.
You have to shave your head when you don't want dreadlocks anymore.
False statement. You don't even have to cut your hair when you want to take the dreadlocks out. Here are the ways to take dreadlocks out:
1. You can cut or shave your head if you don't care about your hair, this is the
fastest way to remove the dreadlocks.
2. Cut the deadlocks until they are about 3 inches long and then soak the rest of
the dreadlocks in VO5 conditioner and comb them out. This will leave you
with about 4 or 5 inches of hair.
3. You love your hair and want to keep it. Just soak the dreadlocks in VO5
conditioner and comb them out, it may take a couple hours but you will get to
keep your hair. Don't worry if you lose a lot of hair while you are combing
the dreadlocks out, this is hair that would have fallen out in the day-to-day hair
removal cycle. The only reason you still have it is because you had dreadlocks
and dreadlocks keep the hair all knotted together.
Mayonnaise, Honey, Toothpaste, Glue, Rubber Cement, Mud, Chewing Gum, Peanut Butter, Shea Butter, Candle Wax and Hair Gel all work great for starting dreadlocks.
Yea, if you want your dreadlocks to fall out, and want to suffer from nasty bacteria and mold growing in your hair. These products are not used or recommended for one reason, they don't work. They were not made for dreadlocks, and there is no reason to try to make them work, if your going to make dreadlocks do it right, get some DreadHead wax and shampoo follow the instructions and you will have great dreads.
Any products that mention or say for dreadlocks will work on dreadlocks.
False. Most products that say for dreadlocks usually aren't they are suposed to be used to condition African hair. If the product contains any petroleum then it is your dreadlocks worst enemy.
Dreadlocks are for rastas only.
It is a common misconseption that dreadlocks were started by Rastas and only Rastas should wear them. It is common knowledge that cavemen wore dreadlocks, not for spiritual reasons, not for fashion, just for the fact that the comb wasn't invented yet. It is ok for you to wear dreadlocks if you are wearing them for fashion, and it is ok for you to wear dreadlocks if you are doing it for spiritual reasons, hey, whatever works for you.

asian hair sucks because it's just straight, no kinks or texture or anything. it's boring.

edit: i just remembered the reason i started this thread. i was ripping my billy when i singed 1 of my hairs coming down from my fringe. and then i thought, shit how much of my hair have i accidentally singed while i was completely baked.

What a coincidence- I caught my hair on fire in Amsterdam less than a month ago. I was baked.
When I was a little girl, I lived in Hawaii, and I was the only "white" kid in my class. The other little girls, with long black straight hair, were my ideal, and they liked that they could curl my hair around their finger and it would stay in a ringlet- we used to brush each other's hair after school- so ms.naturally curly now uses a flat iron every morning to get the look you wake up with, cutie-pie!

I have not once encountered any weirdness from rastas because of the color of my skin besides the fact that Rastafari is about unity, love and respect (yes there are some people who take their African heritage to the level of racism which is stupid) Actually it is the opposite because they tend to gravitate to me, expecially if they see the conquering lion of Judah on my person or my red gold and green wristband poking out my sleeve they will mark me as a friend in a crowd and come up. But got nothing wrong with anythign ya said, jsut wanna kill ya for the pink text bwaaaa

I'm too impatient to grow my hair long but i'd love to have long hair like david gilmour used to. Or some cool dreads. But, for me hair is too much of a hassle, i have to have it short.

I used to have that long "David Gilmour" hair. Looked just like in this pic, but longer. Now, however, it's short-off the ear, above the collar, nice and professional looking. Although, I do admit, I'm starting to get a lot more grey than I'd like :(

I'm letting it grow out. It's bleach blonde on top, dyed brown under. Wavy at the ends cause of a perm like two years ago. And I have a lot of hair.. when I don't blowdry it, which pretty much is all the time cause I'm too lazy, I look like a damn lion.

i quit cutting it a couple of years back and thanks to torches (plumbing), paint sprayers, and male pattern baldness it seems to have stabilized about half way down my back.

i fret more over my beard than the hair on my head. it's not that i mind the grey, i just didn't know i'd earned so much of it.

Since i was young it was a bowl cut, and everyone hated it in my town, now I have long hair(it's usually calm but when it's windy it puffs out(which is awesome!!)) and everyone in my town has either a bowl cut(skater hair) or short. I'm an individual.

Mums making me get a haircut in a week or two though...i really don't want too. Also...i cant go back to school with long hair....having long hair is against school policy....fucking assholes.

Oh well....im gonna not wash my hair for another week or something....i really wanted to see if it would lock up and dread in this time period....but it didnt so meh.

Vin Diesel? I LOVED you in A Man Apart! Good job! Hope you land the roll in the upcoming Hitman movie!

lol i was thinking that too :D My hair is pretty short, don't really do anything to it until it gets long enough to start getting messy, then i use a bit of gel. I like being able to wake up in the morning and not have to do anything to my hair. And what's all this #1 and #3 stuff, i have no idea what that means.

I love dreads. They look good on almost everyone, IMO!
Not so crazy about big huge fat ones, unless you're like a 65 year old hippie or Rastafarian fella with dreads that are so long they have to be worn in a knot!
But I think the little skinny ones are super super super OMG I can't say it enough times sexy.
It's just when people don't take care of them and keep all the fuzzies worked into them that they look kind of blah.

But its dark brown and usually medium to long lengh. It's nothing to speciall. I does what I call the "prep school flip" at the sides but I think that's just a side effect of going to prep schools my whole life.

Big fat thick long ones that would fall past his waist if he didn't tie them in a knot.
And he's tall and freckled with big green eyes.

i had a pretty big fro to. I posted a pic of it on the 3rd page at about medium fro length. But before school started it was like twice that size. I decided to get it cut because it frizzes out so damn much.

I've had my dreads for about 10 months.. never used any wax or any chemical crap in them, so there veeery nice.
And, well i like being crafty.. making bracetlets, playing with beads, and wapping my dreads in string, putting in lots of beads, i even have a roach clip in one of them! Ha, there a good time. I dyed my dreads brown 3 months ago (see last pic), since its my natural hair color and.. it was time. I had to get rid of all those wraps, too.. they were starting to be quite a bother..
The buns are pretty trippy, though :]
peace everyone,

Pure natural dreadlocks, I used the neglect method. They came out pretty good, I have a lot of ppl asking me if I had them put in. I recommend this method for everyone not giving a fuck about their hair, like me :-D. I also refused to have them put in, because it seems a bit hypocritical to me to pay a whole lot of money to have a hair-do that suggests neglect (NPI).

Back on topic:
I don't tend to do much with my hair, I often keep it short and messy. I wear hats quite a lot too. Although I've taken the same approach as Tokinasianguy, my hairs rather long and messy at the moment. It needs to be chopped off.
