View Full Version : Above the Influence Commercial

I just saw a commercial for the anti-drug agency called Above the Influence. In the commercial or propaganda reel to which it shall henceforth be referred, average American (actors) are caught up in a craze of affixing leeches to their body for an implied high. (Paying no attention to the fact that the use of leeches does have actual medical benefits, in my opinion.)

At the end of the commercial, the sobering message: What Could You Be Convinced to Do? is broadcast against a solid black background. The background dissolves into an image of a rolling paper and marijuana being sprinkled into it. Stop motion footage shows the rolling paper beginning to form a joint, but... In my opinion, it's the worst rolled joint I have ever fucking seen. Any cannabis connoisseur would laugh at the feeble attempt.

In conclusion, anti-drug agencies are lame, but their commercials are even worse.

you think anti-weed commercials are bad now?
check what the "message" was in the past.
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6134138168753053667&q=history+of+marijuana
it's the documentary called "Grass".
It shows you how weed became illegal.
And that how is by telling people that if you smoke weed, you kill people.

They repeatedly came up with new false reasons on why weed should be illegal.
Until they were proven false.
This is why I think anti-weed commercials now don't give any "reason" on why weed is bad. They only show weed makes you extremly lazy and following peer pressure is bad.

I like the anti-tobacco commercials because their theme is "Truth".
Using "Truth" as the theme for anti-weed commercials wouldn't work because it will show people that weed isn't a negative thing.

oh.....my....god...i was thinking the same exact things.
also, leeches secrete a local anesthetic so that its carrier wont feel it feeding and that may be the sought after feeling.

I've only seen one good anti smoking add. The one were the guy talks about smoking weed with his friends, and how they just sat on a couch, how its not bad it just makes you sit around. He states hes a risk taker and would rather go out and experience the world. I thought it was pretty ingenious.

Then again they should start smoking some sativa!

I saw this commercial and thought exactly the same thing you thought. First I thought "What the fuck, how can you compare a leech to marijuana?" then I thought "If you're smoking because you're 'under the influence' then you're pretty fucking pathetic." Then I thought "That joint was so shittily rolled, I'm sure they could have gotten some stoner to roll it for the commercial instead of some dickweed that compares smoking weed to putting bloodsucking parasites on yourself to be cool."

yea the joint sucks but imagine if it was a perfect joint.. then they would be advocating that shit and it would be even funnier

Leeches are useful! Johns Hopkins uses them for post-op digital (fingers, toes) amputations to increase blood flow for faster healing. They also use maggots to clean burn victims and infectious wounds.

I offered to stick my hand in a leech jar for a 7th grade science project... It was great.

dude that joint was fucking horrible, i bet it was rolled by a cop or something. even my first joint i ever rolled was better than that piece of shit!!!

ive heard of leeches being used as medical treatment in the past, but i think this is not about the leeches, its about getting the message across about marijuana. more fucking propaganda and lies.... just what this world needs!

I saw that one today. guess they never had some of the stuff i get. Kinda makes me motivated, even motivated enough to clean the house. some days i like to roll a big fatty and put on some good tunes and clean. then after that i get sit on the couch and watch movies with friends, if that's so bad then send me to hell but only after all the weed is gone.
some of those adds are just to lame.

That was a parthetic attempt at getting kids off drugs. At least they got over that "gateway drug" garbage. That was back before I smoked though, but looking back it really gets me angre because pot usually just happens to be the first thing everyone tries because its so harmless..

That is probably the most sad commercial I ever seen. It doesn't even correlate with any concept of reality, right down to the joint. Does above the influence think teenagers are stupid?

Hahah, go to the above the influence website SLOM section (where this video can be found), and read all the stuff there.. infact read the whole site. It's Hilarious.

"Example: Those who engage in SLOMming (sticking leaches on myself) often fear not fitting in or simply enjoy being a sheep in the flock of life. Notable sheep have included: fans of White Snake, people that wear parachute pants, and that 20-year-old guy who still hangs out at all the high school parties"

Well put, Chris!

I like how they make out peer pressure to be something that is EVERYWHERE. I've never felt pressure to smoke pot. When I was younger and stupider, filled with the anti-drug mentality from grade school, I was totally against all drugs.

The DARE came in, and I saw how cool drugs really were.

Yeah, make your own decisions. I did, I smoke pot, and I am happy with my decision. DARE was a success!

Ditto. I've done some of my best housecleaning while stoned.

Those commercials are so laughable! The message they try to send is weed keeps you from enjoying life & peer pressure is bad. But yet, they make those ads to pressure people into not smoking weed. No pressure there, huh? I've had no trouble enjoying life, motivating myself and such. In fact, weed helps certain activities become more enjoyable.

I don't think they show the leech one anymore. I haven't seen it in a while.

I like how they admit "I didn't go out and kill anyone. I didn't OD on heroine. Nothing Happened. We sat on petes couch for 11 hours."

First of all, its finally nice to hear anti-drug propganda that doesn't claim marijuana kills or promotes violence. Second of all, I don't think I have ever sat on a couch for 11 hours.

I have been seeing this other commercial where the black kid is driving his buddies around in his car. He doesn't smoke pot, because hes gonna grow up to be big and strong some day. ....Till he goes to college....but its "WhatevaH!"

Im in college, so when i graduate i'll buy a second diploma and roll that bitch up and smoke it. Thats all I have to say.

I would like the petes couch commercial better if the kid got off of it and was hit by a bus

The leech one just came out, you probably just miss it is all.

That black kid one makes me laugh...i've got pretty big plans for my future, and drugs aren't setting me back one bit...

I never thought about how the anti peer pressure people are actually pressuring people not to smoke until i read it here. Really interesting.

12-17-2006, 10:45 PM
Lol yeah..but it's ok if THEY do it, just not other people, and I've never really been pressured to do anything, even though my parents think I have.

I admit I'm guilty of pressuring some people sometimes, but it's really a joke, I'm not forcing them to do anything really.

Whats funny is I can turn on MTV and see shows like the "Real" World where drinking is glorified and leads to one of the white guys dropping the n bomb and almost getting into a fight out of pure alcoholic rage. Then they roll an above the influence commercial a minute later showing some stoners chilling peacefully on a couch and tell ya not to do it.. Am I the only one that sees a problem here?

Adelaide
12-18-2006, 02:55 AM
Ever see that one with the guys going through a drive through and they hit a little girl on a bike? Maybe the problem isn't people smoking...it's whatever parent let their kid ride a bike in front of a drive through! Also, I love those "comebacks" on that site...like you need to think ahead about how to say you don't wanna smoke or it's gonna be forced on you.

we get this magazine here at my high school called TeenInk filled with mainly irrelevant teen "poetry" that is pure shit, and on the back cover, there's a big pot leaf with a maze in it, and the maze has a beginning, but no end. Get it? I guess if you start smoking weed, its just a maze of pain with no end. Yay for propaganda.
