i made like 10 holes with a knife in the bottom
Holes at the bottom of your pots are like a safety mechanism. They prevent accidental drowning, like KP said. But they aren't necessary for the plant to grow, as long as you have a good handle on watering. In a pinch I have used containers without drainage and got a good crop. But you have to know precisely when to water and how much since you don't want any standing water in your pots.
If you are new to growing then I would make the holes, just as you have done.

Just knife holes are probably not going to be enough. Make actual HOLES, not just slits.
Holes not only provide drainage, they also allow more oxygen to get to the roots.
When I make my pots out of 3-gallon sour cream pails, I drill 3/4 inch holes with a paddle bit not only on the bottom of the pail, but also up the sides. M y plants seem very happy about it.
