I'm growing from seed and I want to have at least 2-3 females in a rubbermaid dwc under a 250w hps and some cfls. Could I start with 6 in an 18 gallon tub? I will be sexing from clones as early as I can. could I start with 8 plants then cut the males? I'll probably be scrogging it to get good light coverage.

I have been told 1 plant per 10 gallons, the source of this info is very reputable. So you're looking at 2 plants in an 18 gal rez.

You can grow trees in 5 gallon buckets, example, GH Water Farms and any DIY DWC/Bubbler. The biggest problem you are going to have is trying to grow them from seed in the same tuv because by the time you are able to sex them they will have all of the roots intangled and if you cut the males the left over roots will rott and mess up the grow.

good info here. If you want to grow multiple plants in a tub...you must wait until you have a sexed female Mother plant, then do it. Root tanglement is a real problem when growing more than one plant in a tub...you might be able to sex clones in time, but I doubt it. 1st...clones cannot be taken until plant is at least a month old...by then there will be roots everywhere. If they tangle then you have to cut the males out and that will leave dying organic matter in your rez as well as choke out some of the other roots...
And, as mentioned above...You can grow 1 or 2 and get just as much yield, probably more with less plants. goodluck

Thank you all for your input. the thing is I want to start 5-6 seeds to guarantee a couple of females, but I don't think i am going to have room for that many buckets.
i guess i'll start in smaller buckets. or something.

You could grow them in separate containers in soil, then when you have an established mom, keep her in dirt and clone her - load up your hydro setup with femmes whenever you need.

yes, It is a good idea to keep your moms in soil. I do it both ways...everytime I decide to just use soil...I somehow end up with a mom in a bubbler...hmmm...lw

i guess i'm starting with buckets, because i really want to do a hydro grow next.
which brings me to my next question: What kind of air pump will i need to oxygenate 5 buckets?

you willo need an airpump for each bucket or buy a double pump and use for 2 buckets. I stone in each...Walmart sells 2 models...One for 14 bucks, and one for 20 bucks.

my friend has 2 25 litre buckets 3 plants in each you have to start with fem seeds the stems are around 1.5 inches across at the base after 4 weeks of growth tallest is nearly 2 and a half feet with 16 internodes and the side branches are up to half a inch thick they look like trees and are all sativa, id say just start with fem seeds and get some 25 litre buckets with a lid.
