i recently decided i was going to go buy my first pipe, but i have no idea what i'm really doing. the only way i know of to judge pipes is to go by looks, but i thought there might be more to it than that. or is it just one of those things where i have to take it home and see how it goes?

Well, take into consideration size, chamber room, how many chambers, any other filtration processes, etc. Go with the bong that best suits you though... there's no need to go off spending 300 bucks on the best bong you can find, because if it's broke, it'll break along with your heart.
If it's just a PIPE... then it's kinda just a "hey it looks good, I'll take it!".
Goodluck searching man, it's always fun searching for pipes and bongs.

yeah really just base it on how cool it looks and if it is nice and thick glass. they will all get you high, so just go with what looks cool!

just get something like that, usually cheap. nbd.
i look for the thickness of the glass, a thick pipe will be more durable.
size and shape of the bowl is another thing. if you dont smoke with alot of people you dont need a very big bowl. if the bowl isnt cupped enough and more v shaped its easier to suck ash through.
i always get pipes with a carb hole, its not needed really its just fun to puff the cherry and clear the pipe with it.
the rest is just looks, if you like it, its yours!
bongs/waterpipes are a different story, so clarify what you want

and if you are of age, or have a friend who is, i would definetly go to a shop to buy one (not online) just because it can be really hard to tell quality from a picture.. but that is just my suggestion, i have heard people who have been really happy with online purchases
