I`m looking to grow a dozen shortish Indica`s (Afghan) and wondered if i would be better to go for a 600w for better bloom. Thanks guys.

Four medium sized nicely, to maybe 10 small ones.
Go for the 600w for your grow, some say 600ws are the most efficient of all anyway.

If youre concentrating on bloom lighting, get an HPS/switchable.

You mean swith from a MH to HPS using the same ballast ?

Yes, a ballast where you can switch the ignitor off, and thus use an MH too. There are some threads about them if you click back a bit...

Good tip, thanks faithless dude, would it be best to use the same wattage for veg as well as bloom ? I know Equiv wattage MH/HPS have slightly different lumen output but it shouldnt matter should it ?

Well, you can veg more under 600W, since they're smaller at that point than they are when they are ready for harvest, but you'd have an excess of veggies waiting to get flowered.
