View Full Version : on my way to California

it turns out i might be moving to Cali soon so what can anybody who lives there now tell me about it?

where are some relatively safe areas to live in the state itself but particularly Los Angeles (keeping in mind i'm on a lower budget)? also, is any where that's going to have rent below $1500 in the LA area going to be a complete dump? anything else worth mentioning?

and if anybody can answer these two questions as well that'd be great:

- for anybody who's lived in both Canada and California, will it be a huge shock for me to leave Ontario going to this place? it will be the first time I'll be living on my own, I'll be about 18 when the move happens

- anyone work in any recording studios in the LA area and can give me their take on a few? I'm going down to apprentice as a recording engineer with some "Recording Connection" hookup that will allow me to sign on with a studio almost anywhere in North America, so I chose the state where all the best bands record lol

If you are moving to California don't move to the shit hole.

Move to Nor Cal where it's beautiful and friendly, and much less crowded.

I'm aiming for LA only because of the vast amount of high quality recording studios that may hire me. what major city's are in north california?

Okay well I suppose that is a legitamite reason.

I just really don't like So Cal.

Well San Francisco is a major city, still full of people and overly crowded(which is what I hate).

If that is why you are moving there then I suppose you will have to move to a big city. I just don't like the city I guess.
Good luck!

I only lived in So Cal a year and I hated it.

Then again I was 13 and probably hated everything.

I live in a city now though too and I am not too keen on it to say the least.

i've always lived in a relatively small city (never more than 200,000 people), so I guess adjusting to LA would be like adjusting to any city

i know compton fucking sucks to live in, is that anywhere near LA or surroundings?

The city I live in now has like more than half the amount of people that live in my state all condense here. Kind of funny...

I don't like it though, in 3 days I am moving back home to my small little town of 20,000 people and I can't freakin' wait. FUCK the city.

did you always hate the city or has it just gotten shitty for you over time?

TallulahGreen

Pretty much always hated it.

I thought I would like it you know..because I always enjoyed visiting this city. However I am here now and I don't like it.
I don't feel safe.

Maybe because I don't have a car and it's fucking freezing and everyone tries way too fucking hard to be cool.

I like my small town where my car is...and theres just a bunch of fuckin' hippies.

Maybe if the town prior to this that I lived in wasn't so fuckin' great I would enjoy this more. But my little town is just too awesome.

$1500 in LA can get you a decent place, but it won't be close to a lot of the hotspots (Clubs, Studios, etc etc)

Avoid - Compton, Gardena, Athens, Watts, Paramount, Downey, Florence, Alhambra, El Monte - the graffiti should point you elsewhere..

Not Bad - Torrance, Hawthorne, Manhattan Beach, Carson, Whittier, Glendale, El Segundo

Nice but $$$ - Marina Del Rey, Palos Verdes, Pasadena, Malibu, Century City, Santa Monica, Brentwood - These places are worth it if you can find a roommate

I lived in the LA area for ~ 20+ years, and theres good areas in bad neighborhoods, and vice versa everywhere. OC is a little nicer for the most part but more of a commute to the basin

I live in Studio City, L.A., Ca. in a guest house with my wife and our rent is a $1,000.00 a month including utilities. The last place we lived was a one bedroom in North Hollywood where we also paid a grand a month.
So $1500.00 can get you a nice place in a decent neighborhood here in the Valley.
And on top of that, weed is legal here. {well kind of anyways}

"Made up my mind to make a new start,
Going to california with an aching in my heart."

That's the very first thing that popped in my head when I saw this thread.

God I love Led Zeppelin.

And I love you. ()

Going to California. Listen to that song. It never ceases to make me smile.

Hope your move works out for you. ~

California is full of bumbs. You can't walk the streets of San Fran without getting begged for a dollar. I can't belive the state doesn't do anything about it.

Hey man, Im from Quebec and moved to san diego when i was 15.
it is quite a shock, but a good one!
so much to do, so much to see, so much to smoke!

if you're thinking LA, go for a suburb, because downtown is pretty crazy.
if you're down for some funky lifestyle though, you can look around DT and could most likely find something suitable and affordable.

and if you are not familiar with medical marijuana...welcome to california!

I lived in California until I was 12 and moved to Ontario hahaha! California is a great place. I lived an hour south of LA, and I'd definetly suggest Northern Cali where it's beautiful and not crowded. It won't be a HUGE shock, just a few minor differences that you'll get used to after a few months.

everyone is saying downtown sucks, suburbs are awesome...but the same people are saying you should live downtown if you're job will be downtown..which it will be most likely....shiiiit

I was planning on moving to San Gabriel in January from Orlando ,Florida. The prices I found are best right outside LA (s.g ,corona, pasadena) ,and still a 1 bed studio is 700-800 a month. Keep us updated man , I would really like to hear that you made it there . Later man

Ya, if youre moving to cali (where i live) you shouldnt move to LA, unless you really want to. I use to live in the bay area, and let me tell you, its awsome. You should try getting a place there but it isnt really cheap.

Sacramento is low-budget, only 1 1/2 hours away from the bay area, and has it's fair share of recording studios.

L.A. of course has the most bands wanting to record, but Sacramento has a VERY strong local music scene, and it's cheaper to live in Sacramento too.

Don't forget Sacramento is the city of Trees! Everybody lights up...It's a pothead haven.

move to the san francisco bay area dude, youll have all the high quality medical pot you could want, and the recording studios around here compose mutch more creative and unusual kinds of music. you should like berkeley, oakland, san francisco, etc. san jose is nice to, just not exactly my cup o tea.

I say you either move somewhere downtown or like on the outside of the valley like North Hollywood. I lived there for a while and enjoyed it, it's pretty cool, plus I don't think rent is that much.
