Hey guys, the Centre for Cannabis Policy Reform Ireland (www.ccpr.ie) is organising the first protest march in Irish history on the 7th of May in Dublin (possibly Cork if there is enough interest). I think it's a better approach than the tired J-Day format, which results in little more than getting arrested. Properly organised, this could open the door to proper events in the future. After all, J-Day itself is supposed to be the Irish version of a Seattle Hempfest or whatever, it's just a matter of getting the numbers. I should clear something ive just noticed (before some "expert" does) A Country cant Legalize on its own it would break the UN treaty on Narcotics if it was done, so tech we could decrim but not legalize however its back to square one its not going to happen...........

If enough Irish people were pissed off about the war on drugs there would be impetus on Ireland to reject it as well. totally separate issues when it comes to trying to convince the mo-fo's that
run this country that cannabis should be legal...

Because on the one hand your always going to get a certain amount of people
that will say and accept that it should be made available for medicinal use only!

it decriminalised for us ordinary folk. . . .

If your going to try and organise a march you must be somewhat convinced

a yearly basis have been on the downturn over the last five years,, the London
march was even abandoned this year. . . .

So with that in mind,, what makes you think that a march in Dublin is going to
do anything to make any difference to the policy that our government has on Cannabis/Drugs in general. . . .

You say the difference is that your optimistic about change,, well the truth
is that it's going to take a lot more than optimism to change the minds of

I'm not Kiel but I am a member of CCPR :-) A properly organised and well attended march would not make any difference to policy but, it would be the first time any official form of dissent against the laws took place, which no politician here has had to deal with as yet.

I'm going to try and cover everything you said if I can remember :-) As for Eoin Ryan, if the possibility of being sued by lung cancer victims is the 'main' obstacle to legalisation we have very little work to do! There has never been an incidence of lung cancer in a marijuana-only smoker. The facts are on our side, that is why this 'war' is so winnable. As Bill Hicks said, we're already winning the war on drugs remember? :D

And yes, recreational and medical use are seperate issues, but if you pass medical use, people will realise that the dangers of cannabis aren't as bad as they were told. That's one way of looking at it.

Of course a march isn't going to do much but it's a step in the right direction. Get the issue in the papers and get our arguments out there.

So,, with that in mind,, does anyone really think it's a good idea to try to organise some form of dissent against our government and the people of
this country about Drugs...

The amount of people that don't see cannabis as a drug,, or at least a dangerous one,,is minuscule in proportion to the total electorate who do
see it as a dangerous drug,, the same people that see all Drugs as Dangerous...

Maybe there will be a time in the near future when folk can gather a few
thousand people and march through the centre of our capital city and actually
have a voice,, and more importantly be listened to and taken seriously by both
the government and the people. . . .

But if there ever was a bad time for something like this,, then this is it..
People are simply not going to listen to "a handful" of folk that want a law on

These legal drugs can cause some of the following: Liver failure, reanal failure,night sweats, rashes etc etc, theres a whole page in the packs warning about these side affects. Now my question would be, why is it okay to take chemicals which have been proved to cause the above side affects, is renal failure a safer option for me than the munchies.

Thanks Notech. We're not naive enough to think marching will make a difference to legislation but it will spread awareness and get legalisation discussed in the media. We're also printing a shitload of leaflets for handing out on the day. Hopefully it'll be a platform from which things can grow and we can get a decent movement going.

And whoever mentioned getting their weed confiscated, that won't happen unless you're smoking it!

Hey Bud, of course cops will be there but they have no right to search if you're doing nothing wrong. Anyone smoking weed at the march itself won't be allowed because it will give the cops the chance to end the whole thing. There will be an after party though for those wanting a smoke :)

Hey Bud, yeah we're trying to organise something in a pub with bands etc. Not sure yet. Mfitp, you have to realise that if you're smoking pot in the march the gards can come in and break it up, thereby making the whole thing pointless!
