"Studies have also indicated miscellaneous benefits from 5-HTP supplementation in patients with fibromyalgia. Reductions in serotonergic tone are partially responsible for cognitive deficits (memory loss) resulting from tetrahydrocannibinol (THC, the active component in marijuana). When given to rats, 5-HTP can significantly attenuate THC-induced memory impairment.[3]"

"The present study investigated the involvement of the serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) neuronal system in the Delta(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol-induced impairment of spatial memory in the eight-arm radial maze in rats. Delta(9)-Tetrahydrocannabinol (6 mg/kg, i.p.), which impairs spatial memory, significantly increased the 5-HT content in the ventral hippocampus. A microdialysis study showed that Delta(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol (6 mg/kg, i.p.) decreased 5-HT release in the ventral hippocampus. The 5-HT precursor, 5-hydroxy-L-tryptophan (5-HTP; 50 mg/kg, i.p.), the 5-HT re-uptake inhibitor, clomipramine (0.01 and 0.1 mg/kg, i.p.), the 5-HT receptor agonist, 5-methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine (5-MeODMT; 0.01 and 0.03 mg/kg, i.p.), and the 5-HT(2) receptor agonist, 1-(2,5-dimethoxy 4-iodophenyl)-2-amino propane (DOI; 10 microg/kg, i.p.), significantly attenuated the Delta(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol-induced impairment of spatial memory. These results suggest that the 5-HT neuronal system may be involved in the Delta(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol-induced impairment of spatial memory.

So where does one get ahold of this 'so-called' 5-htp?

What were we talking about?

I picked some up at wal-mart. Cost $7.69 for 45 50mg gel caps. I took 2 of them at 4:00, from what I read it takes about an hour and a half to reach full effectiveness. I'll smoke a bowl then and report back to you :)

damn thanks for the info. im gonna get some of that shit and give a couple week test run to see if it affects my memory whatsoever.

I love pot but nothing in this world is perfect... a little memory loss attributed to smoking weed's not gonna make me quit but if i can help reduce/stop it, of course im going to try!

Its not even like that skink. 5-htp also increases your high. It does so because 5-htp is used by the brain in the production of serotonin.

Ok, 2 one hitter bowls into this smoking session, I'm pretty damn high. The high does feel slightly different than normal, hard to really put my finger on it. Either it works or its a placebo effect, either way, its cool. Its not an overwhelming difference, but noticeable. Then again, I picked mine up from wal-mart, and while I was looking up where to get it, it said wal-mart wasn't the best brand on some medical forums. I'll have to look it up again and post the brand that doctor recommended. Once I run out of this shit, I'll try a different kind. Give it a shot. 5-htp actually has other uses too.

Yeah,,,your crazy... why would anyone want to take a man made chemical to make your brain act different... Just because you can buy it off the shelf doesn't make it safe... if you get brain tumors you would be like,,, why was I so crazy...

i would agree with that except ive never heard anything at all bad about 5htp. as far as im concerned its my friend because its "enhances" your high and helps out with one of the only negative side effects of thc. sounds good to me.

i agree with skink, even given all the facts, i would say that science changes every year, but weed dosen't ;)

5-HTP is a supplement like vitamins. Wtf is this shit about it increasing your high? Hardly, most common use of 5-HTP is to prevent serotonin depletion. It does in no way increase your high, marijuana or ecstacy, like many people believe.

I take 5-HTP and have for about...hmmm...I forget. But I'll take it religiously for a couple months, then lay off it for a couple months. I read that you don't want your body to get used to the 5-HTP doing all the work. It will take some time to begin working, but overall I have a sense of well-being that jives well with the herbal high I seek. In addition I take Flax Seed Oil or Fish Oil for Omega-3 fatty acids. Good stuff...and good to hear about this effect, and it doesn't surprise me.
