Well guys I've finally decided to start my first grow log. I have two strains, one seed from a good bag I had and some seeds from Dr. Chronic which are Afghan. I chose Afghan because Stinky Attic recommended it as a good strain for first time growers. Let me say that Dr. Chronic is the bomb! Seeds came in a business envelope 7 days after I ordered them.
I started the bagseed 15days ago. For the bagseed I decided to use "Martha Stewarts Potting Soil" and an old Halloween candy bucket for the pot (2 gallons) I drilled holes in the bottom of it for drainage. I've been using CFL's (6 23Watts and one 24" fluro tube). Somehow I managed to rig the lights so they are all within 2" of the top of my plant. The closet space is 5' x 3'.
I made the mistake of starting the seed in a small see through tupperware container and after a while the roots were visible through the sides of the container. I also made the mistake of not using a fan in the beginning and as a result of my two errors, the bottom "real" leaves yellowed as well as three other leaves. I quickly decided to transplant "Crystal" into the 2 gallon "pot" and added a new fan for circulation. What happened next was amazing. Crystal trippled in size and at day 15 she is already starting her seventh node. The yellow leaves are at the very bottom of the plant (closest to the cotyledons) and there is no trace of yellowing on any of the new growth. Should I prune the dead leaves or just leave them?
Knowing that I would soon be using good seeds as well, I decided to change my grow room. Luckily, space is not an issue and now I'm in another spare closet that is square 5' long 5' wide and 15' high.
I've also upgraded my lighting system. I'm now using a 400watt metal halide in conjunction with a 400watt hps as well as all 6 cfl's and the fluro tube I used to start Crystal. That's well over 50,000lumens +++. I now have two fans for circulation as well.
I germinated 4 of the 10 Afghan seeds I received from Dr. Chronic last night using the paper towel method. All four of them have already cracked and as soon as I see 1/4" of the root I'll start them in the Martha Stewart potting soil, each in their own 2 gallon pot. (I don't like to transplant and I've read that the more room the seeds have for growth, the better their chances of being female.)
I bought a ph meter and a water gauge from Home Depot. The water gauge shows me how much water the plants have so that I'll know when to water them and to help prevent overwatering them. A much needed investment seeing that I tend to over "love" my plants.
I'll post pictures of Crystal and my grow room as soon as possible. Keep your fingers crossed for me. Any input or suggestons you might have is greatly appreciated!

Cool. It's a lovely plant.
I started the bagseed 15days ago.
What sort of bagseed? Nice smoke?
Somehow I managed to rig the lights so they are all within 2" of the top of my plant. Good, good....
I made the mistake of starting the seed in a small see through tupperware container and after a while the roots were visible through the sides of the container........ I quickly decided to transplant "Crystal" into the 2 gallon "pot" and added a new fan for circulation. What happened next was amazing. Crystal trippled in size Yeah that will happen! Transplanting seems to actually be BENEFICIAL! People talk about transplant shock but every time I give my babies a new home in a pot of nice fresh soil they take right off again.
BTW I am also growing chrystal and it's coming along nicely.
The yellow leaves are at the very bottom of the plant (closest to the cotyledons) and there is no trace of yellowing on any of the new growth. Should I prune the dead leaves or just leave them?
That's pretty normal. Leave them on for now and when they drop just from shaking the pot, remove and destry them. Dead leaves are not a good thing to have laying around.
I germinated 4 of the 10 Afghan seeds...... All four of them have already cracked and as soon as I see 1/4" of the root I'll start them ....., each in their own 2 gallon pot. (I don't like to transplant and I've read that the more room the seeds have for growth, the better their chances of being female.)
Okay this is not such a great idea. You should start them in pots about the size of one of those dixie cups that people used to have in their bathrooms in those little cup dispensers. Giving them too much root space initially is not as beneficial as you would expect. The best thing to do that will increase the chances of the plants turning out female is to keep all the light in the blue end, so like a MH or cool white flouros. Ditch the HPS entirely until they flower; or, if you are intent upon using it early, until they start showing signs of side shoots and are DEFINITELY past the seedling stage.
Oh also you don't need to wait for 1/4'' of taproot... it's so easy to break a long root during the planting that I never let it get more than 1-2mm outside the shell.
I bought a ph meter and a water gauge from Home Depot.
Start out with balanced soil and many of your potential problems can be avoided. When you can get a chance to order liquid pH indicator, it's cheap and a bit more reliable. As for the water meter, just pick up the pots and if they feel too light, give them some juice.
Good luck! Happy growin'!

The bagseed looks to be indica, short, fat leaves, though I'm not sure what the exact strain is. Thanks soooo much Stinky for your advice. I am going to ditch the HPS for now, until the flowering stage. I'm also going to take your advice about the smaller dixie cups for starters instead of the bigger pots. Geeze, what you said about the tap root makes total sense, so I'll go for the small size 1mm. Wow Stinky Attic, I'm truly honored to have your feedback. I've been inspired by your log and all your good advice, not to mention that you're a fellow New Englander....lol....thank you so much.
Bree....I found the meter in the gardening section of my Home Depot.

Well then if it's indica... you will be okay! :D
Some people really DO like to wait until the taproot is longer. Just my styleee.
Good to see us NE-ers rocking the homegrown... there's so much crap kicking around on one hand, and on the other hand the Canadian mids that are EVERYWHERE are on like their 3rd or 4th dealer and have been abused and -dare I say- SPRAYED somewhere between the border and here!? A friend of mine just picked up a BIG bag- like a pound or so- of Canadian mids- "nooks"- that had been sprayed so badly that they were starting to mold. REally unfortunate and brings me back to one of the reasons I grow to begin with- cutting out the middleman!
So whereabouts in NE are you?

I was running to Canada for northern lights and some really super, duper weed called "billy" bud. (Billy has since dried out.) I just got tired of all the travelling and sneaking over the border. I also love indica strains and have gotten bored with northern lights. I'm in Maine and the weed has gotten sub-par through the years. The cool thing about our northern neighbors is that it's so easy to get good weed if you're willing to go the distance. Of course now that the ski season is underway, some good weed comes up to Sugarloaf via tourists so my luck might change. Anyhow, I love to garden, tomatoes/peppers/basic veggies so I thought, what the heck I have plenty of space and time, why not grow my own and with the A'dam seeds being as good as they are, i.e. selection, there is no excuse not to grow. The law in Maine seems to turn a blind eye to anything cultivated, until it's stored in baggies anyhow...of course, I've taken every measure to be discreet regardless. This grow has proved to be exciting so far and dare I say, my latest obsession. :D
P.S. Sad news about your friend's botched pound! That sucks.

Here are some crappy cell phone pictures of Crystal at 15days old. (Note the yellow leaves at the very bottom from newbie neglect!) Keep in mind as well that the pot she's in is huge so she looks rather small!

I agree Arkle, Crystal is short but she's bushy and she is filling up with nodes. Last night was her first night under the 400w MH so maybe that will help her grow up a bit, though I'm not complaining about her being short and bushy. Anyhow, I planted my 4 germinated Afghan seeds into small paper cups last night. Their tap roots were somewhere around 1mm, so I don't expect them to pop up for a couple of days. I planted three of them in the basic Martha Stewart soil and as an experiment I planted the fourth one in miracle grow potting soil. (Probably not a good idea but it is just an experiment.) Can anyone tell me about the odour of Afghan plants? Do they reek or not? Anyway, I'm going to try to post some better pictures of Crystal today. Oh yeah, and one thing I was not prepared for with the MH lighting was the heat! WOW! My closet has no ventilation so I've had to add another fan for the nighttime (when the door is closed) and during the daylight hours I've decided to keep the door 1/2 way open. Good thing I haven't a need to be too stealthy, or else I'd have to abort.

Heya,
The Afghani Dream I was growing didn't smell too stank, and the odor that it DID have was almost vanilla-ish, even through curing!
I'm in Maine and the weed has gotten sub-par through the years. ......... Of course now that the ski season is underway, some good weed comes up to Sugarloaf via tourists so my luck might change. .
True DAT!!!
Skiers are notorious for having lots of green to spend on ...um... green! :D LOL, maybe I will finally ski sugarloaf this year and be one of those annoying yups with the out-of-state plates and European sportwagon with Thule racks!!! Tee hee!!!!
P.S. Sad news about your friend's botched pound! That sucks.
Aach, he gets no sympathy from me. He's a nice guy but he's a dealer and that's just the chance you take. I have VERY little patience for dealers, period, unless they grow their own product.

12-06-2006, 03:26 PM
Well, if you ever do decide to come up to Sugarloaf, let me know and I'll make sure you get the royal treatment while you visit! I am so used to being around yuppies and out-of-staters that another one coming through is no big deal. ;)
Intuition tells me that you'd be a good friend, so maybe on your way you could make a pit stop so I can buy you and your man some drinks! (Gotta pay you back for all your help somehow!)
Dealers, yeah, I agree, I think the herb should be free and free of dealers. They've done so much to blacken mj's reputation!
On a grower's note, I decided to change back to my original grow room. The old room got too hot, well over 80degrees, and that's with two fans constantly running, so, not wanting Crystal and company to die, I had no choice. I think they'll appreciate the move!

The box stores even are starting to sell organics.
A decent quality fertilizer for grow... you could use lots of different things, there's a line called Jack's Classic that a lot of garden stores carry that has the micronutrients. The schultz line is okay to get going on anyway. Alaska fish fert is a great N source but not a complete fert with micros, so you have to get them elsewhere. Just look at the NPK and your N should be about the sum of the P and K for grow stage.

Ok time for an update:
One of my Afghan seeds has popped and I'm hoping that the other three will soon follow.
I've also changed my lighting yet again. My newest light is still a 400watt MH but this system is switchable. Now I can use the same reflector and ballast for both MH and HPS, which, when it comes time to force flowering, will make my life much easier.
More pictures to come soon. Peace.

Another update. Crystal is getting huge at 18days old. She's now way over her pot's rim and growing nodes like the slut that she is, God love her. She's also got a lot of activity going on at the junction of her stems, little leaves sprouting between every one. Something strange is happening too. At the top she's growing more leaves but they are longer and much thinner than her others. Is it possible for her to have sativa and indica characteristics? If this is a stupid question, please forgive my ignorance.
As for the Afghan sprouts....three have popped through the soil now. Sophie, Olivia and Jody are their names. Poor Olivia....I was cleaning up some things in her soil, large pieces of bark like substance when I accidently pulled her out of the soil. Luckily I didn't break her tap root, so I replanted her and she seems to be doing fine, except that she's a bit premature. Her seed leaves have sprouted, but her first set of true leaves are miniscule. I sure hope I didn't kill her. (Time will tell)
Jody on the other hand is very strange. She's got a stem, but she's wearing her seed like a soldier's helmet. What's that about? The seed looks much bigger than it did when I planted it and it's covering her, though she still has her stem. So she looks exactly like a seed with a stem. Might she be a mutant? Weird. Jody's the girl in the miracle grow soil.
Still no sign of the fourth sprout. Hopefully she'll pop soon.
Pics to follow this evening. Peace.

Well as bad luck would have it, I came home to find one of my CFL's was slightly pressed against Crystal's largest leaf. :( Fortunately, only the very tip was singed, very slight. Here's to hoping that doesn't have a negetive effect on her growth. Something strange though, Crystal actually moved her other leaves out of the way. I came home to find she was all bunched up. Is this normal? Can plants protect themselves like that? I've gotten rid of the CFL's now and she's starting to get back to her original plant self.
As for the nursery....Olivia is fighting hard to survive, despite her very rough start. There is a bit of yellowing on one of her cotyledons and she hasn't grown much but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that she'll pull through.
Her older sister, Sophie, grew quite a bit more today and seems to be on the right track.
Jody is starting to ditch her helmet. Her cotyledons (sp?) are going to be twice the size of her sisters. Go Miracle Grow....although she'll probably taste like shit...lol....
Lilly is just starting to pop through the soil.

Ok. I've finally got some updated pics of Crystal.
pic 1- Crystal at 19days old. It's hard to see how bushy she is in this picture.
pic 2- Crystal from the top. (Thick and bushy)
pic 3- Side view! Check out the stem in that pic! Proof that a fan can do wonders.
pic 4- Crappy cell phone pic of my seedlings. (2 healthy and 2 not so healthy)
Well, I'm sad to say that Lilly isn't doing to well. She hasn't stood straight up yet and although I'm an optimist, I don't think she's going to make it. The last picture is of my little crippled Olivia. Her seed leaves are nearly dead, but her true leaves are still growing, so I'll continue to try to keep her alive. Who knows, she might surprise me.
Sophie is getting bigger though it's hard to tell from the pics. Jody finally ditched her "helmet" and is looking real nice. The seedlings are now 2 days up from the soil.
I've also germinated two more seeds and will keep you posted.

Hey Babystarbud, you are right and thanks for the input!
Just an update:
I started Crystal on some nutes 2days ago. I am using fish emulsion and I have also used some big bloom to prepare her for flowering. I plan to change her light cycle on day 30. She is now on day 21. She's lovin' the nutes and has already begun her 14th node! Her newest leaves are really going bezerk. Some have a total of 9 leaves and some have a total of 7 leaves.
Little Olivia is way behind her sisters, but she is still growing. She's very small on account of her dead cotyledons. I am going to continue to nurture her just in case she pulls through this fiasco.
Jody and Sophie at 3days above dirt have begun their second set of leaves. An intersting fact: Jody, who is in miracle grow soil, is a bit bigger than Sophie, who's in regular potting soil, but that isn't the only difference. Although both sprouts are from the exact same strand, Jody is a much darker shade of green than her sibling. Wonder why that is?
I've also planted another bean and as soon as the second bean germinates a bit more I'll plant her as well. This will give me 5 sprouts and one adolescent. Hopefully I'll have a female in the bunch.

Update:
Crystal is loving her nutes and has nearly doubled in size.
Jody is beginning to grow her second set of true leaves at day 4.
Sophie is looking good but hasn't started her second set of true leaves yet.
Olivia is 1/2 the size of her sisters but seems to be pulling through and looks as though she'll make it even though I crippled her.

Quick update:
I have a new sprout, 1 day up from soil. I've named her Gail, she is also of the Afghan strain.
Olivia is getting bigger and healthier looking. Proof that you should never give up on a crippled sprout.
Jody is well into her second set of true leaves.(5days old)
Sophie is working on her second set of true leaves (5days old)
I also have another bean waiting to pop up from the soil, that I planted yesterday.

Another update:
Pics to follow tonight.
Crystal is 9inches high and is working on her 18th node. She's only 26 days old and is already quite the giant. Still no sign of sex but between all her lower nodes she's sprouted mini nodes. Her stem at the base is 3/4's of an inch thick and from what I can tell she should be able to hold some serious buds.
Jody is working on her 6th node at 8 days old.
Sophie has fallen behind but has nearly finished her 2nd set of true leaves. One of her leaves seems to be mutated though. She's turned out to be a light green color and is growing much slower than Jody.
Olivia is also working on her second set of true leaves and it has become painfully apparent to me that the cotyledons are very important for the healthy growth of a plant. Since I crippled Olivia and as a result her cotyledons died prematurely she is the runt but fortunately she is still growing.
Gail, my 3 day old sprout, is working on her 2nd set of true leaves and is bigger than all of her sisters with the exception of Jody.

Here is an update with pics!
Pic 1- This is Jody at day 10. She is coming along marvelously. Isn't she great? I think she's on her sixth node.
Pic 2- This is Gail. She's 5 days old, my youngest Afghani, and she seems to be coming along just fine.
Pic 3- This is Sophie. Sophie's got a deformed leaf...the pic is a crappy cell phone pic so I don't know if you can see it. She went into shock after her transplant but is finally starting to grow some more. She's the same age as Jody.
Pic 4- This is poor, crippled Olivia. I've kept her alive because I feel bad. She's struggling to hang on without the help of her cotyledons. See the importance of those seed leaves. She's not even a quarter size of her sisters but she still lives.
Pic 5- This is Crystal at day 28. (Crosses fingers and prays that she's female!) She now measures one foot tall and one foot wide. She's my big slut. She's got tons of undergrowth and seems to be loving life. She gobbles her nutes and her soil has stayed at a wonderful 7ph. I can't even count her nodes there are sooooo many and her undergrowth is phenomenal. Peace.

Quick Update:
Crystal is doing very well...on her 4th day of being forced to flower. She's 15inches tall.
Jody is quadrupled in size. Although she is Afghani, she's starting to smell like a dead skunk...lol. Her fan leaves look glossy and greasy. I think she'll be the more potent than Crystal just from her look and smell.
Gail is looking a little sickly. I've had to prune two of her fan leaves because they turned crispy and orange. She didn't take to her transplant too well, probably because I transplanted her into a different soil than what she was originally in. Her new growth is looking good so far, so there is still a chance that she'll survive.
Olivia was not only crippled but I also dropped her pot! She's certainly the runt of the pack but I think she'll make it...still keeping my fingers crossed anyhow.
Sophie is coming along just fine. Her color is georgeous.
All five Neville's haze beans that I germinated popped and were planted in soil yesterday. One's come up from dirt today. Can't wait to see how these little buggers turn out. Peace and Merry Christmas.

Update:
Crystal is on her 10th day of flowering and so far she's accumulating a lot of little white hairs. She has more bud spots than I can count and she looks as though she's going to be a high yielder. She's now 22 inches tall at 41 days old.
Jody- I had a slight problem with Jody, she didn't take to her nutes too well and I gave her nute burn. I had to prune 8 dead fan leaves. The pruning stunted her growth for a couple of days, but at day 23 she's now 11inches tall. She has plenty of living leaves and her new growth seems to be doing well. I'm actually amazed at how bushy she still is and I'm thinking that the pruning has proved beneficial.
Gail-Because I transplanted her into different soil than what she started in, she too had to be pruned. 5 Fan leaves died. She's making a good recovery since I started her on some nutes. She's a bit behind her sister and not nearly as bushy. I'm thinking she's starting to develop like a male...but I'll keep my fingers crossed. She's now 7inches tall at day 23.
Sophie- She has turned out to be a wonderful surprise! She is incredibly bushy, so much so that I can barely see her stem. I planted her in a much smaller pot than her sisters, but she's getting on quite well. She loves her nutes and is now 6inches tall at day 23. Here's hoping that she's a female! Oh, and she smells something fierce.
Olivia- I'm so proud of Olivia. I crippled her as a sprout and later dropped her pot, but my God, she's pulled through. Of course she's still the runt, but she is now working on her 6th set of true leaves....this without the help of her cotyledons. She's small but I have a feeling I'm only going to have good results with her.
And in my nursery:
I have successfully germinated 4 Neville's haze beans. They were planted in their soil on Christmas eve and at day 7 they all have their second set of true leaves. I have named them Tori, Abby, Melissa and Miranda...lol....They are a wonderful dark green color. In my germinating mechanism I have one giant bagseed that's working on a mighty fine looking tap root. I will plant it in soil on New Year's day. THANKS FOR READING. PICTURES TO FOLLOW TONIGHT!

Quick Update: Crystal's flowers spots are coming in wonderfully. I lost count at 20spots. I'm not sure what her yield will be, but after only 12 days of flowering her buds are nearly 3/4's of an inch long. The main cola at the top is at least an inch long. Any ideas about what that might yield? I'm totally new to this, actually this is the first time I've ever flowered, so any help is much appreciated! Oh yeah, Crystal is now 25inches....yikes!
Gail is recuperating wonderfully and has some great, new growth. Judging from her growth pattern, I'm guessing she's going to turn out to be a Galen...lol. (A male won't be so bad considering I plan to do some cross breeding in the future!)
Jody has filled out beautifully since her pruning. All her new growth looks great. I will wait even longer before I try the nutes again, it's strange that her sisters took to the fish ferts well, but she didn't.
Sophie is by far my favorite of all the Afghanis. She's short and very bushy and seems to be growing upwards more now. I've decided to keep her in her small pot eventhough more room would be better. I'm not looking for a high yield, just a healthy growth so hopefully my decision will work out for the best.
Olivia is starting to look greasy. I'm so proud of her. Her stench is increasing as is her size. She's still the runt and I'm almost positive she'll be female. Here's to hoping.
The Neville seedlings are growing so fast. They are all working on their 4th set of true leaves and so I'll have to brave a transplant in the near future...I hate doing that but I have no choice seeing as I started them in tiny pots.
My baby Afghani is looking good except for the fact that one of her cotyledons are dead. This will probably mean stunted growth, but so far I see no signs of that.
Mystery bag seed has been germinated and planted in soil. She still hasn't popped up from the soil yet but I'll give her some more time. She was a huge seed so I'm sure she'll be a nice, healthy sprout soon.
I'm still waiting on my Pure Power Plant, Master Kush, Afghani, Jack Herer and Skunk #1 beans but I'm not in a hurry to receive them. I won't be germinating them until the other girls are in the flowering stage....just not enough room for more than 11plants in my growspace.
Pictures to follow this evening. Peace!

I am now the proud owner of three potential HP13 babies! There will be a new log very, very soon! I'm going to have to pull out the big guns for this grow! Props to you my friend, may you be blessed immensley for your kindness!

Something funny.....
Two of my plants have grown an enormous amount of leaves and so became a little heavy. I needed to give support to their stems so this is what I used....lol
Ever eat chinese food? You know those sticks that the terriyaki chicken and terriyaki beef come on? Well I used one of those sticks for the two plants. (after giving them a good cleaning of course) Here comes the kicker....I wanted to use something to tie them onto the sticks without harming them or their growth....well, my five year old has this cheap, novelty toy, it's a hand, miniature hand that is, made of this gooey, sticky material that if you slap it against something it sticks...a hardened version of "slime" if you will. I used that. It worked. The material doesn't dig into the stem and is flexible, very flexible. It's also sturdy and stretchy. I had to do this some days ago and the plants have had no problems so far....lol....Peace.

Quick Update:
Crystal is on her 15th day of forced flowering. She is an incredible 32inches tall and has 23 bud spots/flowers forming. So far they aren't too big, but there are all kinds of white hairs which look nice. Anyone know when the resin glands begin to form? The biggest buds are on the main stem at the top and the middle nodes but besides that they all seem to being growing at the same rate.
Jody- At day 28 I am going to begin forcing Jody. She's already got some preflowers and she's 13inches tall. I don't want her to turn out too huge. Again this is head space so yield isn't the most important thing to me, just healthy growth.
Pics to follow tonight.
I've germinated one HP13 seed and it has cracked but hasn't shown much of a tap root yet so I'm going to hold off on planting it.
My transplanted Nevilles seem to be doing real well since their move....I'm lucky not to have killed them all. I will transplant my 2 other babies today, maybe...lol
Olivia has grown up very nice but she's starting to scare me a bit....she's growing like a male, but after all the abuse I put her through as a sprout I half expected it. I'll hold out until she matures of course, but I'm not holding my breath. Weird things are happening to her too. The leaves on one fan leaf curve down, like an upside down canoe. She has plenty of water and her ph is fine. What could be causing this? She's got 5 sets of true leaves and she's 28 days old but I haven't given her nutes because she was so stunted. Should I? Any advice is appreciated. (The tiniest little yellow spots showed up on one fan leaf as well.)
Sophie is my beauty. She's bushy and beautiful. Her leaves are nice and green with no blemishes. I'm not sure how tall she is but she is a wide momma. Can't wait until she matures.
Peace!

Ok, broke down this morning and ordered a T5 6 bulb grow light. It supposedly emits a whopping 30,000 lumens. I'm hoping this will compliment my HID's. hmmm, sounds like a flower nute... i know someone is probably going to flame me for this but oh well... i use miracle grow all purpose for garden veggies in veg (24, 8,16) at half strength, my babies grow like miracles! just make sure you start at 1/4 strength with it if you use it... full strength can burn...
HiProGlow
01-06-2007, 08:55 PM
Ok. Yeah, I'm going to get flamed too, but I've used miracle gro bloom boost and have been using it with Crystal one week before I began flowering her. She's so full of bud spots it's incredible. (After 16 days of being forced most of her bud spots are near an inch long and phat!) To help out with the flavor a bit I've added natural cane sugar, she had her first dose this morning. I read in Heads and High Times that it is a very good thing to add natural cane sugar to the mix. I see nothing wrong with Miracle Gro as long as the girls get a good flushing before the harvest. If it works, use it! Peace!

sugar or molasses (mls works best) are good to help them metabolize nutes. i reccomend you get greenlight super bloom to use in flower; that stuff is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!! its basically a super phosphate with a nice balance of n and k. i stopped using mg in flower and found it affects taste, but not potency (mg makes it taste floral and perfumy, even when stopped two weeks b4 harvest and flushed four times....)

Quickie Update:
I have successfully germinated my 2nd HP13 bean. It cracked and grew a nice tip in less than 24 hours. (Holds breath...) I've started her in a peat moss pot to make the transplant a bit smoother, just seems easier to rip away a pot then it does removing the rootball from the pot itself. I'm hoping this will cause less stress and less stress is a good thing. Don't worry, I'm not going to transplant it pot and all like the package suggests because I've learned that peat pots can cause root-boundedness and stunt growth. Tonight I'll have pics. Peace.

hi proglo, i just wanted to say that i think it'd be better if you waited about 3 weeks to transplant to big pots. this will allow time for the babies to for a root ball, and then all you have to do is let the soil dry, pull out the dirt/root ball, and place it in its new home (i go with 3g).
when i transplant, i layer the bottom with new soil, place the dirt/root ball in and fill a couple of inches more than the top of the old dirt, and drench it all down with green light's root stimulator. root and plant growth EXPLODE!!!
mmho...

Thanks Kindprincess, I'll keep that in mind for my next transplants. I like the thought of root and plant growth exploding. :D It makes perfect sense! I learned the hard way that 3 gallon pots would be more suitable for my girls' final resting place. And because of this I learned what was going wrong with Sophie....her soil was packed tightly and her roots nearly surfaced so I had to perform major surgery. I loosened up her soil quite rigorously and in the process was forced to sever some roots. Of course her growth has been stunted as a result but I think the looser soil and better oxygen intake will do her such good that she'll bounce back with vigor! Thanks again....Peace!
kindprincess
01-08-2007, 12:37 PM
one thing about xplanting... the roots will find their own way; you don't have to "loosen" the soil. as a matter of fact, i'd suggest you leave it as compact as possible for transplanting. in less than one day, you'll have new roots everywhere, and by not disturbing/hurting the roots, there's no downtime or stress/shock.
love, kp:p
ps, i'll post some xplant pix tonite.

Update!
Crystal is 50 days old and on her 19th day of flowering! She's looking good but she's zapping all her nitrogen to form those buds and let me say that there's a lot of them. Pics tonight, hopefully! Height/width tonight too.
Jody is doing very well. She's on her 4th day of flowering and is starting to spread out like a Christmas tree! By the looks of her, she's going to be a high yielder, but time will tell. Height/width tonight too.
Sophie is on her 2nd day of flower and is 32days old. I'm forcing her early because I've got her in a small pot. Again, I'm not too concerned about the yield, just the quality. Height/width tonight too.
Gail is recovering, but has been so pruned that I think her yield will be miniscule. I'm too attached to kill her so I'm just going to let her veg a great deal more before I even consider flowering her. She's now 12" high.
Olivia is looking spectacular. She's 32 days old and 9" inches high. Not bad for no cotyledons and being dropped. She's filling out quite nicely and I think she's going to be a good producer.
My Neville's haze are 16days old and 2 are 5" high with 12 sets of true leaves and 2 are 4" high with 8 sets of true leaves. Their color is wonderful and so far, no blemishes.
Kindprincess, I took your advice and transplanted my youngest Afghani, I think I'll call her Carly, into a 3 gallon pot. I used Bonide's root and grow to stimulate her roots a bit, so now all I have to do is watch her explode!
My HP13 are coming along slow, though they have popped through the soil, they have yet to stand up tall and show me their cotyledons...they must be shy.
Ok, hopefully I'll have pics tonight! Peace!

HP13--a hash plant cross- AMAZING smoke, strong, WOW
Molasses is actually better..helps soil beneficials as well as the plants
Euro sportwagons... lol... SO cliche, but SO stealth. I've been pulled over plenty of times for lightbulbs out, with all sorts of questionable crap in the car, and I always get the polite, 'Good evening ma'am, were you aware that you have a headlight out and a dead body stuck in your grille? I just wanted to make sure you knew! Have a wonderful evening!'
HiPro your plants are looking great and you are going to be SOOOO happy with the T5 light for seedlings. It is IMHO the absolute best product on the market for starting young plants. It may be a bit much for clones though unless you get it up to at least 6" away.

Neville's Haze #2= (24days old) 6" x 10" No real growth on this one because of a mutation (I will add to the mutation thread tonight). Weird growth came out of the center where the new nodes usually grow which has prevented any new nodes, but the plant is compensating for this by growing on her sides.
Neville's Haze #3= (24 days old) 9" x 12" Normal growth so far.
Neville's Haze #3= (24 days old) 8" x 12" Normal growth.
HP13=(age unknown) 3.5" x 3.5" working on 4th set of leaves.
Afghani=(age unknown) 4.5" x 8" Her leaves are looking magnificent and her growth seems healthy.
Crystal= 58 days old and 27th day of flowering she has developed quite a cola and the buds are growing nicely on her off shoots.
Jody= 12th day of forced flowering and already plenty of white pistils. She's developing her flowers quite different than Crystal and is already nearly Crystal's height but a bit wider.
Olivia= 3rd day of forced flowering and still no sign of sex.

Ok, now I'm absolutely confused. Can those ball shaped bumps I thought were ball sacs actually be pistils?
.
mornin' hipro!
Sometimes you may mistake a calyx for a male flower.
The differences are simple though.
Male flowers always grow in clusters and have little short stems under them.
Calyxes grow singly at first, and sit snug at the node, no stem.
Calyxes will sprout pistils about 1-3 days after appearance.
This is why I don't throw out males until I clearly see that the balls are on stems.
Looking good there!!

Crystal is nearing harvest and will be on her fifth week of flowering tomorrow. I'm beginning to think something went wrong with her. Her sugar leaves are turning bright orange but her buds are forming nicely. I think I'm going to have to spend a lot of time manicuring her.
Jody is gigantic at four feet tall. Her flowers are coming along wonderfully. She has turned out to be my bestest plant! lol
Olivia, my runt, is taking up soooo much space now. She's beginning to form her flowers.
Gail is still looking sickly but she's doing her best to start her flowering. I expect a very small yield from her and I am beginning to think that she's just taking up space. Yet I can't bear to destroy a female.
My youngest afghani is looking great in her giant pot. She's growing rapidly and with absolutely no blemishes. She's showing great promise.
My HP13 is dragging ass but it looks real nice.
I have successfully germinated three seeds of Hawaiin origin today. They were also put in soil.
I have four other "mystery" beans germinating as I type this and if they form a nice tap root by tomorrow, I will plant them in soil. Pixs to come on Sat. Peace!

Quick Sex Update:
So far my ratio is 4 fems to 1 male.
I have determined the sex of one Neville's Haze....MALE....arghh....it's off to the chopping block for that one! The other three still haven't shown signs of sex.
New ratio- 4 fems 2 males. (not too shabby!) Peace.

Hey, HiProGlow.
For some reason, I could've sworn I posted here recently, but I just looked back and it seems I haven't. Wierd. Anyway, everything's looking good, bro. Congrats on the fems. Too bad about the Haze of Neville. :(
Keep it up! Looking forward to new pics and your successful harvest.
You go, HiProGlow......yo. :p

Hiya Green! Thanks for the comments/input! Just a quickie update. I harvested Crystal yesterday morning. She's drying out now. I'm guesstimating that she's put out about 2 ounces (not too shabby for only a 78 day life-span) of some brilliant orange bud! If I had to wager a guess, I'd say she's Cali Orange. Peace.

Um. Damn.
Surely the HID goddess hath blessed ye!
How long ya gonna cure your new citrus there?

I'm going to cure 'til I can't stand it anymore Blue! Unfortunately for Jody, I broke one of her bud stems accidently. Fortunately for me I got to sample her, albeit two weeks premature, improperly dried and barely cured. Ok, I admit it, I couldn't resist, even at the cost of the green taste but she's wonderful! Couch lock with an attitude. Yipee!!! Pixs of my harvest to come soon! Peace!

Quickie Sex Update:
My final plant is able to be sexed now. It's a Male. I'm happy about that because I want seeds. Neville's x HP13 could be an interesting mix. So, the tally of all the plants in my first grow 7 females and 4 males. Peace!
