Abraham was not close to one of the best presidents. If you think he was, then you need to study up on your history a bit more. You are just listening to the government.
Right after the civil war ended, new inventions would make it cost more to keep slaves than own and take care of them. Slavery would become something that broke down to the point that history would follow to this path. Lincoln just did something a few years quicker.
He made some good speaches, but JFK>Lincoln anyday.

JFK was a womanizer and a cheat on his beautiful wife and Kennedy bootleg money bought his presidency.
He was too much for his time and they took him out.
I think the best president since I have been alive {and I was born a year and 3 months before JFK was shot} is a toss up between Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton.

FDR, Theordore Roosevelt, Washington, Jefferson and others were better than anybody in my lifetime.
How does JFK get credit for wanting to "banish slavey"? It was all over almost a hundred years before he became president.
Lincoln went to war with the South because they seceded from the Union, not because of slavery. In a letter to Horace Greeley, editor of the New York Tribune, Lincoln wrote: â??My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and it is not either to save or destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave, I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves, I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone, I would also do that.â?

ok not banish slavery, but give black people rights... and meh, i knew people would disagree with what i said... i'll admit i don't have the best knowledge on presidents, that's a fact for sure... but every other president i've ever known or heard about, or studied in school were just in general douche bags... and JFK was cheating with marilyn monroe... o.O i prolly woulda done the same thing :D
for example, we all know why bush sucks...
nixon was involved in some huge scandal, i can't remember now, as it was years and years ago when i was in school, but i remember specificly his scandal leaving me with a horrible impression of him
i believe (not sure) jefferson was having a secret life with one of his slaves, and from what i heard, even had kids by her
clinton lied about the stupidest thing, he was better then bush but i still didn't like him much
in general i hate presidents who did or do drugs, then turn around and spread propoganda type shit... it makes them a full fledged hypocrite.
there's others but i'm prolly running out of my 5 minute edit time.

You've got a good point. It's takes certain traits to succeed in politics and, sadly, that those traits are not goodness and honesty.
Advocating the decriminalization of weed doesn't make anyone a good president. Jimmy Carter was/is a great diplomat, and I have nothing but respect for him in this area, but he wasn't an especially good president. He simply didn't have the skills for the job.
I think Reagan was a good president. He came in at a time when America was at a low point. Vietnam, Nixon, and the Iran Hostage crisis etc. had done little for the self esteem of the country as a whole. As an older member here I can remember the days when the newspapers would always have stories about how the Soviets has so many more missles, tanks, troops, etc than we did and that didn't help either. Reagan came in as the flag waving cowboy, jump started the military into wht it has become today, and restored pride to America. For that alone he deserves a lot of credit.
Clinton was also an ok president. Just because he got blown in the oval office doesn't make him a bad guy. JFK fucked anything that moved but people tended to look the other way at that type of thing back then. I don't think Clinton did anything really spectacular that will stand out in the history books, but he didn't really fuck things up either. And lets face it folks, that's about all any pres can really hope for. We have to be realistic, no president can come in and solve every problem in existance. Especially since one person's solution is another person's problem. So as long as they come in and generally steer the ship in the right direction we should be happy.
That being said, George "Dubya" Bush will certainly go down as one of the worst, if not the worst, president in history. Bush is nothing more than an egomaniacal tyrant. He doesn't give a damn about the country as a whole and will do whatever it takes to further his own agenda. Seriously, the only difference between him and Saddam Hussien is that Bush hides behind the American flag. We can only hope he doesn't fuck up more shit over the next two years.

I was waiting for your reply Fengzi,,, I agree almost word for word on your assessment... one thing I would like to add to Clinton's defense is he was probably one of the best book keepers we ever had... who knows what the financial fallout from the Bush years will be...

Franklin was not a president.
I think many of you are confused. He didn't ask for the shitiest president, you are all naming very bad presidents. James Madison is, in my mind, the greatest president. Ronald Reagan is a good president, he brought great strength to the conservative movement but at the same time catered to the needs of big business and granted amnesty to illegal aliens, which is one major cause of the border security problem we have today.
My vote is Madison.

Damn straight Jimmy Carter! And also the greatest of men Franklin Roosevelt!
A conservative is a man with two perfectly good legs who, however, has never learned how to walk forward.
Franklin D. Roosevelt
A nation that destroys it's soils destroys itself. Forests are the lungs of our land, purifying the air and giving fresh strength to our people.
Franklin D. Roosevelt
Confidence... thrives on honesty, on honor, on the sacredness of obligations, on faithful protection and on unselfish performance. Without them it cannot live.
Franklin D. Roosevelt
Here is my principle: Taxes shall be levied according to ability to pay. That is the only American principle.
Franklin D. Roosevelt
Human kindness has never weakened the stamina or softened the fiber of a free people. A nation does not have to be cruel to be tough.

I guess if I had to choose the least of all the evils, it would have to be FDR. He led the country out of the Great Depression, instituted the New Deal and helped defeat the fascist powers in WW2. He deserves some respect for that, I guess.

Every president who has been in office during the war on drugs has been an enemy of our liberty. Every single one of them sent big men with guns to break down people's doors in the middle of the night and take them off to jail for doing nothing more than growing a harmless plant.
Shame on you if you voted for them. Shame on you for continuing to defend them.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, William Jefferson Clinton, in that order: these are the only ones that I've been alive while they were in office, there might have been better ones but since I've been here, these are my choices! Last place G.W.Bush-Ronald Reagon-George bush I, in that order from worse to not so worse I guess you can guess my political affiliation, eh!
