If you guys have love science fiction ( like me) and a damn good theme, this is a really good
read. John Wyndham (author) tells the story that is all about plot and theme. It reveals the
sociological and psychological implications of a group of left over people after the
fallout of a nuclear was. The author has only one main character , because the novelā??s focus is
on general impression. The narrative account is told in first person by a bo who is about the age
of ten until he is seventeen. The story is a satire on the theme of racism. Anything deviant is
destroyed. When a group of people want to feel better than others, negative events happen.
People neglect to look after the gifts that come with birth and this tends to increase the struggle
of Mankindā??s innate destruction towards the human race. David Strorm (uh the main character
once again) relates a history of coping with his villages cruel ways and racist morality. His
father Joseph, is considered the most powerful citizen and best model of expected deviant
hunting behaviour. Then the war begins as brothers Joseph, the antagonist, and his lost brother
Spidermen fight to the death. The theme of racism, how it began and spread to the four corners
of the earth is woven through the improbable fiction novel with some ring of truth. Lacking the
truth, the Waknuk people were convinced that god has sent tribulation upon the Old People as
punishment but god spared them because they were superior. As they tried to free themselves of
mutations and surly did not understand radiation fallout, the cycle of survival continued. History
and education were lost and had no priority. David , had to think things through with very little
information to begin his own survival. Many of the Waknuk peopleā??s ideas were flawed. The
only mutants quietly allowed are huge horses because they do twice the work, making the
owners wealthier. The satirical form used for reaching the audience is less bitter than the story
plot because it is written for the sensitivity of youth. The author had to have the point about
nuclear warfare apparent while encouraging youth to continue reading the science fiction. The
earth is close to living beyond survival and if our innate self destruction can be balanced with
our human gifts of courage, empathy and forgiveness we will have peace.
Do we have flawed thinking in our society, maybe. We have democracy and we do not war on
other for the love of war. However, society has problems with greed, superiority and racism.
We have a society with similar problems. People leave their original country to get away from
war and bring what starts it to their new country. One example is jihad dogma. We need to teach
tolerance and education as well as protect the less fortunate. When education is slowly limited
and we lose the freedom of speech, we know we have to react not only for ourselves , but also
for others like in Afghanistan. This is really amazing, it nearly reminds me of to Kill a
Mockingbird (Which is actually way too slow to getting to the point, but itā??s an enjoyable book
for some) This is defiantly the science-fiction type.
