8 is good, but just keep an eye on things, because some strains are finicky with the lumens and can go white on the top koalas do to chlorophyll bleaching.

I keep mine a solid 3 feet from the canopy. I'm not using a cool tube or anything, and need it to light a 5x6 or so area.

a thousand watts sounds @ 8 inches is pretty hardcore, you must have some serious cooling system to compensate for that...i'd like to see a pic of that also :)
i know that set-up would fry my plants, and im only using a 400watt open air jobbie

yea i would say as long as you can keep the top of the canopy at the right temp you should put it as close as possible....:twocents:

3 feet...
YO GIRL... you've gotto get that light CLOSER..
iloveyou
What are the circumstances that have caused you to put your light at 3 FEET?
Your COLAS will be MUCH MUCH bigger if you can get that light 12 inches from your canopy.

Seriously that's my exact problem. It hit 97 degrees in my grow room last week... November... New England... wTF. The plants pretty much live on a diet of silica blast. :D
get a bathroom exhaust fan and install in the top of the closet immediately temperatures that high can hermie them, stunt them, and or kill them. you'll need an air vent in the door (or adjacent wall) so the room can "draw in" cooler air; that is once you put a fan in the ceiling.

4x5, thanks for the advice but it's not a closet. It's the whole damn attic.
I've been culling/picking herms carefully and not having any other issues other than excessive water usage. I use Silica Blast to protect my plants from temperature stress, and I have to say it seems to be working nicely.

...a though the wall...temperature controled ..attic fan..would help..
..my is set on 80F...but I don't grow in the attic...metal roof and all...
..what is Silica Blast?

It's a silica supplement that is said to help plants resist heat and drought stress.
I'm actually going to be taking advantage of my heat problem and adding CO2 shortly.
Now that the outdoor temps are down, the attic is fine. It was just for a week AFTER I removed the a/c and installed my 'winter' HPS1000 but the weather outside simply refused to behave winterly.

I grow my ladies up to 3-4 inches from my light. Using a glass sheild and a 500CFm vent fan I can actually lay my hand on the glass without getting hot.

I already told ya... There's an a/c in there but it comes out of the window on November 1st. Summertime is just fine. I've been in that particular grow space for a full year now and the only problems with heat or cold are at the change of seasons.
