View Full Version : Proper way to light a joint

I have a question regarding the proper way (if there is one) to light a joint. I usually smoke out of a pipe or a bong, and the weed I get tends to be rather dense and sticky. I don't smoke joints very often, but once in a while I like to try something different for variety's sake.

Since I've been rolling ciggerretes for several years now, I've got a pretty good handle on rolling properly. However, I noticed that when I roll a joint with just weed, I need to light it like you would light a cigar, by holding the flame about 1/4 inch away and taking gentle puffs in order to properly get an even light. If I try and touch the flame to the joint directly, instead of lighting the joint it just burns the paper around the joint, and the weed inside simply flames up and burns without me being able to draw properly and inhale.

My question is, is this normal, or am I doing something wrong that would cause me to have to light the joint like a cigar? My concern is that I enjoy smoking outside, and it is very difficult to light a joint outside without the joint simply being destroyed by the flame. In addition, I don't have a grinder, so I usually just crumble the weed as best as I can by hand, so would this have anything to do with the joint not wanting to light by a direct flame? Or does it have more to do with my weed being either too sticky or too dense?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

just burn the paper down until its even with the weed...then just blow on it lightly then take a couple puffs to keep the cherry burnin n what not...then smoke the shit

There isn't really a proper way, it's just what way people find best for themselves. If you find lighting it 1/4 inch away from the joint the best way to get an even burn, stick with that. Experiment and find which you way you find most preferable.

Just inhale as you light it. It helps and doesn't make you look like a noob lol.

hey asshole, this is a cannabis forum and one of the primary uses for it is spreading information about marijuana smoking; so instead of that sarcastic comment you could have just as easily answered the question politely for him. sure it's not the most complicated question on the forums but he's looking for some help, not an insult. no reason to give him one.

anyways bro what u wanna do is light the very tip of the joint with the very tip of the flame and inhale very slowly. you want the whole front end of the joint to be on fire when you breathe in on it

i do just like you and i roll (rotate) the joint between my fingers to have it all cherry even...works fine, and in the end thats all that counts:thumbsup:

thats how i do it. my joints are gonna be all paper at the very top, so i dont wanna inhale that shit. then when it gets to be towards the bud, i puff on it like a cigar so that it truly lights the spliff.

Thanks for the good advice, it seems that my problem before was trying to light up a joint outside in windy conditions, resulting in the paper and nearly the first quarter of the joint to get charred and wasted, without the tip getting properly cherried for proper and even burning. I'll experiment with the different techniques mentioned, and find what works best.

hhaving my joints getting torched is rather rare, but I didn't know if my method of lighting was unusual or the result of a mistake on my part. I'll jsut try different methods in order to get the most out of my weed.

If you're outside in case you didn't know you'd probably want to cuff your lighting space so the wind doesn't blow the fire out. And when you're outside and it's windy try not to inhale while it's being lit. I dunno why but the winds must make it burn faster when that is being done.

It sounds like for outside use, a torch lighter or anything windproof for that matter would do the trick for preventing the flame going out or having too much being wasted... I think I'll try to stick towards flaring up indoors, or If I have to be outside, trying to do so on a calm day..

Sorry if my post makes me sound like a noob, but almost none of my friends EVER smoke joints, as most of them percieve them to be wasteful and inefficient. I jsut like getting the most mileage out of my green stuff, and torching and wasting a good joint is enough to drive me insane..

But seriously, thanks for the tips.:stoned:

Usually I light it evenly, once there is a cherry I inhale, I light it just in my hand, I don't put it to my lips until it is lit. That way it doesn't canoe when your sucking the flame to it.

if it's really dense stick shit (often this stuff doesn't want to light like a cigarette would) i hold the joint at an angle so the tip to light is higher then the tip to hit from (this keeps the paper from burning before the weed can) i hold the lighter there for a few seconds, get it nice n toasty but it doesn't actually get cherried, then i just light it like a cigarette, works like a charm.... it also helps if you throw in a pinch of tobacco when you roll it up, wont' actuallly taste the tobacco but it helps it burn more smoothly, adds a certain dryness to it (cheap ass cigarettes are best as they are the driest...) there's also always double wrapping the joint if no matter what you do the paper is burning faster then the joint (you end up with a bit of burnt weed sticking out past the paper that isn't even fully cherried.) i don't like doing this as then i can taste the paper pretty well, and well paper is disgusting.. but i have done it on a few occasions.

usuaully if im indoors or sumwhere with no wind ill light the lighter burn the top of the joint if theres any remaing paper where ive poked it down then just put the top of the joint at the top of the flame twist it all the way round a few times then put it in ma mouth put the lighter just infront of the top of the joint (1cm away) and toke till the cherry lights up :) or if im in a rush ill just put it in ma mouth put the flame on the top of th ejoint and toke
