Thats the one flaw with that otherwise great design. Noone can get hold of a bake a round.

i think they are not made anymore so you must get them on ebay or at a second hand store. i just got 1 for 4bucks on ebay! they are a bit skinny imo at 4inches, i also have a 6inch cool tube which will hold a 1kw hps bulb, the 4inch is too narrow for such a large bulb! the bake-a-round is great for a 400hps cooltube.

How much does the glass affect the spectrum of the light?

the storm lamp "chimneys" are great for low wattage cooltubes but again they are too skinny for a 1kw bulb. there must be enough space between the bulb and tube for air to flow freely and bulb must not touch glass at all. i tried a "chimney" for a 400hps but it was too narrow so i got the bake-a-round. when i upgaded to the 1kw hps i had to buy a 6inch cooltube because there was not enough room in the bake-a-round for the cooltube to work properly. good luck building your cooltube,. remember 1000watts is alot of power when confined in a small space. you must use the correct equipment and wire everything correctly and neatly to lower risk of fire. i tried a diy cooltube for my 1kw bulb but decided to spend the 100bucks on a "real" cooltube. has anyone else here used a diy cooltube for a 1000watt bulb? i have seen alot of diy 400's and smaller but not any 600's or 1000's.

i just saw that linked thread from above. if you could find a large chimney like that one you would be in business. i looked for a while but was only able to find smaller ones. the only thing is that there is no way the fan that that guy was using had enough power to cool that bulb. i had the same fan for my 400hps cooltube but it didn't have enough power so i had to hook the duct directly to the main exhaust fan, not the best solution but it got me through the grow.

good call! 1kw is alot of light to screw around with in a closet. i have 2 young children so i am very careful about fire hazards. my grandfather is an electrician so i am able to make sure everything was always wired the safest way possible. SMOKE ALARMS SMOKE ALARMS SMOKE ALARMS and i almost forgot SMOKE ALARMS.

Heya ronjon,
I've never done a cooltube before but as requested I'm stopping in to say hey... I was thinking if you had access to some glass-cutting equipment you could get one of those glass jars that's the right dimensions to store pasta, and cut the bottom off. You can use a Dremel tool, but you have to do it under water or at least wet or it will crack and the wheel will burn up too fast.

I tried emailing you.. I'll try again!

ps big thanks for the amen thread... my head is getting big though, lol! :D

I bought a hurricane lamp today and have been mucking about with the glass on a 250HPS.
The jury is still out on this one.
God knows how to fasten the fan to the hood though.

Drill small holes in the edges of the hood and use zip-ties. Tough and removeable.

Hmmm, the trouble is, I want to attach it to my 400W, and that one weighs a ton already, what with the ballast being built in.
To add even more weight seems like begging for the whole thing to come crashing down.

Guess I'll have to look into rebuilding the whole thing, and seperate the ballast from the hood.

Oh yeah seriously get that ballast off there; better still, get it OUT of your grow room unless you use it as a heater ( as I do in winter). And don't be surpriseed if that makes all the temp difference you need- no more screwing around with kitchen wares :D

No, the ballast is not a real heat problem. My 250HPS has a seperate ballast and I'm at roughly the same temps with my 400W, a degree or 2 more.

I'm not having temp probs per se, but I would like to get down from 27 -28 at 40cm's height, to 25C at 25 cm...
I'd also like to be able to stuff both the 250w and the 400w together.

Anyway, will buy cord to rebuild the 400W casing, and another exhaust fan for the tube and see what happens.
A test run with the 250W seems to reduce heat quite well, though not completely.
The bottom side of the glass remained cool, but the top, the part closest to the reflector was hot.
A stronger fan than the one I used will be needed, I think.

you could just buy this: http://www.wormsway.com/detail.asp?sku=MT118
it's about $120 including shipping

and this: http://www.plantlightinghydroponics.com/ecoplus-465-cfm-industrial-grade-blower-p-1558.html
it's uder $100

with a 1kw hps the best thing to do, if you are trying to use it in a small space, is to buy the best possible cooling equipment as you can as to insure that you will not just be wasting you time with a space that's way to hot for growing. with that exact fan and tube i was able to have a 1kw hps in a closet that was only 4ft wide by 22inches deep by just under 7 feet tall with temps never exceeding 81F. of course the ballast was not in the closet.

your next problem is going to be lightproofing that closet. try hanging a thick dark colored tapestry or curtain over the outside of the closet door(fabrics inside would be an extreme fire hazard) and that should help. you can also get some weather stripping and put it around the door and casement to futher help block out the light. good luck.

Michael's Arts and Crafts stores carry the glass I used in my D.I.Y tube, Ronjohn. The one near me had a wide assortment of sizes and shapes.

never thought of an arts and crafts store, great idea. it should be pyrex though or something made to stand up to heat without cracking.

I've done alot of hps playing around and currently have two 400 watt hps bulbs in one hood all home made i'm also putting a exhaust fan right to the hood tomorrow i rewired the ballest so the bulbs could be extended off of them.i always leave a little bit extra wire now i got 5 to 6 feet to play with i've wired a whole lot of fixtures and know what im doing and know my connections are non fire hazards i also make sure to ground everything to the outlet not just to the fixture witch is a sufficent ground but in the case your not there and your feed has a slite cut in it or water gets in your connection the breaker will trip and turn the power off to that circit if you dont have that third prong the ground it wont trip the breaker.

Here's one that I bought: http://californiahydro.stores.yahoo.net/ht-reflectors.html

$60 for a great 6" cooltube with mogul socket installed. I liked it so much I just ordered another. And no, I am not in any way shape or form associated with them, I just like their prices. :)

the 6inch fits 1kw hps bulbs and you can also get 1kw halide bulbs that will fit as well. i've never seen a 8 or 10 inch cooltube. i've seen longer 1's not wider.
