WIFE IN BED WITH ROTTEN HUBBY FOR SLEEP OF THE DEAD
By PHILIP MESSING and PATRICK GALLAHUE
November 23, 2006 -- An elderly Brooklyn widow has told cops she slept in the same bed as her dead husband for three years, officials said yesterday.
Joanne Iversen, 73, recounted her bizarre story after their shocked son discovered his dad's skeletal remains under a blanket on his parents' bed, and took her to the local stationhouse.
The son, Paul, 38, had come to the Bay Ridge apartment hoping on Tuesday for a reconciliation with his estranged dad - not having any idea he was dead.
Paul had been on bad terms with his father, Frank, for several years after coming out about being gay.
He learned to his horror that Frank Iversen, a house painter, had died three years earlier at 75 - but never left the bed he shared with his wife.
"She missed him," a police official said yesterday. "It must have been rather unpleasant at first, but eventually it became less so."
A second brother, Breuk, Lives in Williamsburg. It was unclear if he was aware of what had happened.
Neighbors recalled how the super had used disinfectant sprays to ward off a bad smell about three years ago. Police yesterday said Frank Iversen had died of natural causes, and his wife had checked into a hospital for psychiatric treatment.
Paul Iversen refused to speak to reporters yesterday.

Cops: She Lived With Husband's Corpse For 3 Years
(CBS/AP) BROOKLYN A man hoping to reconcile with his parents made a grisly find in their Brooklyn apartment, police said: His mother may have been living with his father's corpse for three years.
Police said Paul Iversen went to his parents' Bay Ridge apartment on Tuesday to make amends after years of strangement. When he arrived, his mother, Joanne, told him his father, Frank, had died, police said.
Then she showed her son the skeletal remains of an adult man, stored under bed covers in her bedroom, according to police.
The medical examiner was to conduct tests to confirm the identity of the remains, Police Sgt. Mike Wysokowski said. No charges have been filed.
Neighbors at the Iversens' building on Bay Ridge Parkway said Joanne Iversen had told them her husband was simply away.
"I said, 'I haven't seen your husband,' and she said, 'He's in Philadelphia.' She told others 'Long Island,"' said an upstairs neighbor, Vincent Clements.
Several neighbors said they noticed a foul smell emanating from the Iversens' first-floor apartment but couldn't fathom the source.
"We complained a lot, but I never would have guessed there was a body inside," said neighbor Carole Clements.
All the while, Joanne Iversen continued to interact affably with her neighbors, several said.
"She was always outside, always had some sort of story to tell," said longtime resident Roman Rushtlion.
