if you have a little imagination you can make one for under $40.

i have a 400w HPS and a 400w MH... I have temperature probs (too high) so would I be better off to invest in two cooltubes or just buy a stronger fan? the fan i have now cost $55 and doesnt do too much

cooltubes and use your 55.00 fan to cool them

sounds good- might attempt to make them but not sure. cooltubes are probably a better investment then a fan anyways, cause they last forever, right?

hurricane and vortex fans will prob last a lifetime too .. they come w/ a 5 yr. residental or industrial use warranty . 24 hrs. a day for 5 yrs straight , if they fail they will fix or replace at their discretion . but w/ a cooltube you can run your 400w lights w/ in inches of your plants w/o harm .

Anyone own a cool tube? Is the tubing glass or plexiglass? Glass doesn't contain heat well, and I'm thinking of wrapping some 3mm plexiglass (which contains the heat nicely) and an exhaust around a 250HPS I have, which I currently can't combine with my 400HPS because of heat.
Any ideas?

glass or rather pyrex = damn tuff glass,
no doesnt even get the chance to build up heat . i have 2 w/ 1000's in them inline w/ 1200 cfm per min. flyn thru em you can lay your hands on the tube n not get burned .

how do you use that vortex fan? do you have to hook it up to the light?

Thanks for the link buddy. Never heard of bake a round though.
Does anyone know the light transmission of plexiglass? Google tells me that modern greenhouses are made of plexi and they seem to indicate that it allows even more light transmission than glass?

Hehe, yeah thanks! I've been there already and I found it reassuring, but all this is chinese to me:
PMMA transmits more light (up to 93% of visible light) than glass.[1]
Unlike glass, PMMA does not filter ultraviolet (UV) light. PMMA transmits UV light, at best intensity, down to 300 nm. Some manufacturers[2] coat their PMMA with UV films to add this property. On the other hand, PMMA molecules have great UV stability compared to polycarbonate.
PMMA allows infrared light of up to 2800 nm wavelength to pass. IR of longer wavelengths, up to 25,000 nm, are essentially blocked. Special formulations of colored PMMA exist to allow specific IR wavelengths to pass while blocking visible light (for remote control or heat sensor applications, for example).
But would anyone agree that plexiglass seems to transmit roughly as much light as glass? Because it does a good job of sealing off heat...

.
Polycarbonate transmittance in 5/6 of the NIR & 1/5 of the SWIR regions. Also, polycarbonate is almost completely transparent throughout the entire visible region of the spectrum and very sharply cuts off to ~0% transmission at almost exactly 400 nm, blocking all UV light transmission
UV light is beyond the violet range, but is the light we want for our plants contained within the visible range?
This chart show how plexiglas cuts off sharply at 1660 nanometers, but shows good transmission from 860 - 1600. Where are our favorite reds, whites and blues on that chart?

Cool tubes rock. ;)

Edit: Oh, by the way, there is another 265 cfm fan exhausting both the veg and flowering rooms. Split.

Sorry about hogging your thread btw, smokalot...
While searching for my answers btw, I found that cool blue light, the favorite of veggie farmers, is not very good for you, and approaches the retina damaging quality of UV...might be good to know.

vortex q's ,
hey smokealotofpoyamus , yes hook vortex fan up directly to end of cooltube or w/ a piece of ductwork . also i've found the vortex/ hurricane fans do a much better job of pulling air than they do pushing it . in other words suck dont blow lol .

:D hey are cooltubes used to veging or flowering? and if so how big of one should i get for the first stage of growth cus i decided im ganna make 3 growing stations one for the plant when its small then another for when it gets a lil bigger then a place for it when its big and i think im ganna make a flowering cab. Any ideas on what light to get for flowering? do u use diff. lights and wat cool lights to get?? :D please give feedback

They're used for both. Their purpose is to seal off heat, because you get a lot of heat once you start using 400w lamps and higher.
An HPS is the favorite choice for flowering because it has lots of light from the red spectrum, autumn light, but can be used for veg too, though not the favorite light for that.
A good idea would be to mix in a few cool fluors though to make it more suitable for veg.
An MH is the favorite for veg, because it has light from the blue spectrum, which simulates day light/spring light.
I don't think the MH is as all round as the HPS though, I doubt that people flower under an MH.
Fluors are good for veg too, though perhaps not the pro choice of method.
