I think its pretty dang hard to underwater , but over watering you can do with your eyes closed and hands tied behind your back!
From what I hear you want your pots to be dam near bone dry between each watering to let oxygen get in and clean shit out / feed plants.
I have let mine get so dry I swear there isn't a drop of water in them, yet they have never really wilted. Just make sure when you do water, you PH your water! Learn from my mistake :(

the pic looks ok to me...do what keeko and oregon said.
if it gets to dry, a good sign is the plant wilting and going all droopey

The trick is not to love your plant too much, as a smoker and a grower its hard to know whats right and whats wrong you just go with the passion you have for the plant so most begginners tend to over water their plants bad idea! The most important thing to a plant in the early stages is water and air. The plants start their life in a dark room so too much light to soon can damage them, so keep them moist but not wet through, but let the water dry thus introducing oxygen into the roots. Good Luck my friend.!!!!!!!

Also a good sign of dryness, is leaf curl.

Yep, I wouldnt worry too too much. Most new growers over water, not under water. I do the same thing... stick my finger down an inch or two and if its moist, I leave the plants alone. Once its completely dry down there I will water. Apparently it also makes plants stronger if you wait longer to water them, as they arent being babied all the time. I also read in an Ed Rosenthal book that plants can survive wilted for sometimes up to three days. So have no fear, just keep doing what you are doing. And as someone else said make sure you test the Ph before you water them...

does your friend grow cannabis too? if not id tell him to keep his plant opinions to himself, dont take advice from someone with no experiance.
