I am a beginner myself and grow only 1 or 2 plants at a time. I have read about this and information is given in square ft. Iâ??m giving you a lot of info since I donâ??t know what youâ??re using or what you know. I would say yes, that is enough for 1 plant; but you could use more if you wanted to. How much is too much, I donâ??t know. Also, lumens arenâ??t the only thing that mater. Phosphors are important. These plants need red, blue and a small amount of yellow phosphors. They need a lot of blue during veg and a lot of red during flowering. I need more lumens during veg. cycle, but I want to keep the bills down so I use 2 daylight coil bulbs, 30 watts, 2000 lumens a piece from canâ??t say Wal. If you have natural, or daylight they are mostly on the blue side of the spectrum. Then I also use cool white tubes because they put out lots of blue phosphors. MH puts out the most blue per lumens, but Iâ??m not sure which type that is and thereâ??s also the heat factor. Also there is a small difference in the brand of bulb you buy.
Flouroâ??s are nice since you donâ??t have to worry about heat; but, I would suggest switching to high pressure sodium for flowering because they put out more red phosphors per lumens than flouroâ??s. I use a 150 watt HPS, then found if I added a cool white tube they would not stretch as much, and Iâ??m happy w my plants. I think 1 150 watt HPS is enough. But the drawback to HPS is, for better plants you want them to be cooler when the light is on. Probably the best solution is an air conditioner, but too costly for me, so I just use a fan. Another tip, donâ??t blow it on the bulb because it will cool off the bulb and lower your lumens. If you decide to stick with flouroâ??s for and you decide to add more, warm whites put out lots of red. Here is some of the info. Iâ??m using to answer your question:

Another tip, I also use 13 watt soft white coil bulbs for the rest of the house to lower electricity. This is almost as much lumens as a 60 watt incandescent.

Oops. You also need a small amount of orange phosphors. Yellow is needed at an even smaller amount. Also, I have seen grow systems for sale that only use 125 watts for 1 plant. So you probably have a good setup for 1 plant. If you want to know about the spectrum your bulb or bulbs put out you will probably need a crystal prism.

i used a 125w CFL blue for veg and 125w CFL red for flower on my first grow, could not use em at same time but each bulb puts out over 10,000 lumens which was enough for the 11 really small plants i had round it but they did not grow them to there full potential, got just over a ounce from them, now if it had been 1 plant it still would of been about a ounce dried. you have a enough lumens there to grow a plant but dont expect much, a HPS is the best way to go :rasta:

I know, I dont particularly understand that. If you have 1 100watt bulb and you have 10 there are the same amount of lumens? This cant be true, please someone explain this. lumens measure the brightness of a light to the human eye, PAR Watts are the total watts of Photosynthetically Active Radiation i.e. PAR. this is basically how much light is used for photosynthesis

I didn't know that you couldn't add lumens together. That sucks, I'm going to have to change my veg setup. I'm getting an MH and I'll either put a wide spectrum with, or a daylight.

It makes sense. If you add bulbs together you do get more lumens, but it's not the same as adding lumens together. There must be a formula for this.

The lumens are messured per sqaure feet.. If you have more lights, the lumens will glow on one place of the plant, and then you get better growth.. Still it doesn't count as adding them together.. Sorry for being a mood killer!:p

You still don't have to get a better veg setup, just have a few CFL's for veg.. Two over each plant!:)

I didn't have the nerve to hang my cfl's up, and raise all of them all the time, so I'm just using my 400 W sunmaster HPS!:p

And they are growing..!:o

What I mean by adding lumens for example: Think of the light that comes out of the bulb like an upside down v. If you put three bulbs together, it overlaps. My growbox is definatly more bright with more bulbs even if they are placed close together; but, I'm sure that it isn't nearly as effective as the same wattage coming from one bulb. I find it very hard to believe that the amount of lumens coming from 3 bulbs is the exactly the same as one bulb of the same wattage.
