White Rhino & Bag-seed Grow Log w00t

It was time for a new name & a new log, so here we go.

Got 6 white rhino seedlings. Well, 6 and a half, cause my two headed mutant. Also, have 4 approx 2 or 2.5 month old plants, lots of training LST'ing has been done to these hoes, cause we're planning on flowering them once the rhinos are ready. We have the space and the lighting, I know they're going to be huge. So maybe one more month of veg, the rhinos are about a week above ground I believe.

W00t! All my pepper seeds sprouted as well. I have 2 peruvian purple chiles, 1 cayenne, and 3 Texas A&M Jalapenos at the moment. The TAM jalapenos are a little milder than average jalapenos, but are supposed to be badass. I'll take pics next time I get batteries for the camera.

They have all been above ground less than a day, and the jalapenos have turned neon green, stem and leaves. 1 of the chiles has turned completely dark purple, the other one still has green leaves with a dark purple stem. Cayenne just barely broke the soil, still white.

We said to hell with waiting on the rhinos, we're flowering the 4 big ones, they're begging for it. Lol, 4 plants under a 1000watt hps.....what a waste lol, but i bet they yield quite a bit a piece. I can't even count the budsites that are getting badass light.

How many days after switching should it be before I start to notice a difference?

Yeah, I know she is, someone else warned me about that before. If something ever happens, she's banned from the room, but so far I've been lucky. Plus, she's an inside kitty (she has never ever been outside), so whatever pests she has are already in the house. Thanks for the heads-up though, but she's just too cute to say no to though lol. Plus, the grow room is the only warm place in the house so she loves it. And she's great for disposing of dead leaves lol.

I'll keep you posted about those rhinos, they looked really really shitty for a week all yellow and curled leaves but now they look green and started growing again. I'll get pics.

Jalapenos are still curling their first leaves, but growing their second. One has a small burn mark, I raised the lights a little to see if that helps. The purple one looks great, new leaves are neon green with purple veins, but not open yet.

Haha, actually, those plants aren't white rhino. They are each bag seed from different bags, so I have 5 different kinds of plant. The rhinos were the seedlings that didn't make it. My friend has been too busy taking care of the big ones to give a fuck about the seedlings, so they died. We have 10 more rhino seeds though, so its all good :rasta:

Well, that one we topped early on (the one with the circle of big ass tops) decided it was gonna grow a few balls too. I think I figured out why I had almost all females and why half of them went hermi. We got most of the seeds out of some decent midgrade, which ,since it was grown indoors, the grower would have removed the males. Meaning the seeds came from a plant that turned hermi, which from my understanding gives female seeds which also have a tendency to turn hermi. That explains why 4 out of 5 plants were female and 2 out 4 females went hermaphrodite. So we're doing the best we can to pull off as many balls as we can, but seeds in the weed isn't the end of the world, the mid it came from had seeds and was some flame.

1st pic is of the 2nd pipe I ever bought, over 3 years ago, and I still have it. Just a little stone pipe. I also made that rolling tray myself :D It is made from cultured marble. And that herb is just some decent fruity tasting mids I picked up.

While I was in the room looking, the power strip with all the hps and all the CFLs and fans plugged in sparked and all the lights shut off. I guess we had too much in that strip, good thing I was there. Well, I took advantage of the HPS being off and took some pics where you can see how nice and green my girls are. Hey I just met a farmer recently who was doing organic farming out in CA before moving to MA and having to readjust to our shorter season... she was telling me about the romanesco broccoli that looks like fractals... that one is definitely going in the garden in spring, and I guess she has some heirloom pepper seed to trade.. maybe I will stick some little bean treats in the baggie with them and see if she notices, lol!

I haven't seen my girls since saturday, but the word is at least sloth and its twin are really starting to frost up. I guess yall will find out soon enough if you check back later, more pics tonight :D


Ok, since we are on day 26 of flowering and haven't fed them since switching over except one last dose of grow big, we decided to pick up some ferts. Not showing any deficiencies yet, other than a slight chlorosis of the leaves. But it is my understanding that it is normal for the fan leaves to slowly yellow throughout the flowering cycle. Ours are very slowly yellowing from the bottom of the plant up.

For a bloom nutrient we decided to go with Medina Hasta-Gro. Its a 6-12-6 organic fertillizer. We will be using this instead of Tiger Bloom (2-8-4).

We also picked up some Carl Pool BR-61 (9-58-8). Its a bud booster, which is similar in NPK ratio to Fox Farms Cha-Ching(9-50-10).

According to the fox farms feeding schedule, you start feeding Cha-Ching at week 4 along with tiger bloom. This saturday will be the 4th week. Hopefully this should pack on a little weight :) We plan to continue supplementing carbohydrates. We are about 1 feeding away from running out of that organic natural dark brown sugar we've been using and I'm probably just gonna pick up some molasses tonight anyway before the feeding.


We only have a 2 week window left to feed, after the next 2 weeks its gonna be straight water for the final 2 week flush! I can't believe only a few weeks left...

Actually, those plants aren't white rhino. The seedlings that were started at the time of this grow log were though. Too bad all but 1 of them died :( Oh well, I have lots of white rhino & ak-48 seeds left, plus I asked for c99 seeds for christmas :D All 4 of those monsters are just bag seed, but I'll take a pic of the 1 surviving white rhino next time I get a chance. It is really small cause it was severely stunted, but it finally started growing again. If its a female, its getting cloned.


Smokin Dope: I'd give the seedlings a few weeks under fluorescents, like 2-3 total, then put them under that 1kw hps. They grow sooooooo much faster once they get some proper light.


MrGreenFingaz: Those are 5 gallon pots. They were transplanted into those pots on Oct 16th. See the pic I attached, thats what they looked like. They vegged from Oct 16th to Nov 11th in the 5 gallon buckets under that 1000 watt hps. 3 weeks and 5 days of vegging under 1000 watts turned them into that second pic. Thats what they looked like at day 1 of flowering

Dicklewis: I'm looking forward to that next harvest. This time around though, I'll at least get 4 different kinds of bud, cause each plant is from different bag seed.

More pics. Check out the way that one bushy top is shaped. That's what happens when you FIM right before flowering, like 1 week before and don't let it recover. Instead of 1 cola you get a cluster fuck of small ones that make a really big one. Couple different FIM'd tops and a regular one for comparison

FIM'ing is a method of topping where you leave behind some of the growth instead of making it a clean cut. This can cause you to get 3-8 new growth tips instead of just 2 like a standard top. Its pretty cool.

YEAH splifted nice one man but the diagram has confused me, doyou cut the top and the shoots from the leaf joints aswell?

Nah, all you cut is the 2 sets of leaves that are poking out of the top. Like you know how at a top you have immature leaves that haven't opened yet and kinda point slightly up? Just cut off all but the very bottom of those. From the bottom, the leaves kinda look like a tear drop, fat where they are connected and skinny toward where the tips are forming. Cut down into the fat part leaving just a little bit of green still attached to the stem. Basically its just like a sloppy top.

FIM stands for "Fuck, I Missed!" according to the grow bible. Like someone was trying to do a normal top but didn't cut it all off by accident. Then I guess they left it and shat once they got 3-7 new tops instead of 2. There is no exact way to FIM, its more of a hit and miss type thing. Just leave some of the green around the edges when you cut the growth tip off. If you cut too much, you'll get your 2 normal tops. If get it right, you'll get your 2 new tops and then some more will start to form in the center where you left that junk. We tried to FIM like 7 tops on that one plant, but only managed to correctly do like 3 lol.

Well, i half-assed some macro shots check it out. Last 2 are some decent nugs i picked up for 40 an 8th.

Ok, I'm gonna do a breakdown plant by plant with front and top pics. The first one is the "Blueberry Mid-grade" plant. It was the one that I only LST'd and never topped once. Its starting to smell kinda dank & fruity. It is by far the least seeded of the 4, I could only find maybe 3 seeds on the whole plant. Definitely the strongest indica of all the plants, it didn't stretch one bit until flowering.

This is the plant we topped at the 6th node then LST'd it. It has the fewest total buds, but by far the most large colas of any of the plants. Has a kinda pungent slightly rotting fruit aroma. Can't wait to weigh this one, it looks like it will be our 2nd heaviest yielder. Squeezing the buds shows that they are already dense, and they should continue to swell over the next 3-4 weeks

This is the plant that showed sex earliest of them all, and has showed no signs of hermaphroditism. This plant we LST'd and got about 7-8 main growth tops with a bunch of little bitty ones. It is definitely a stronger sativa variety, and looks very similar to Sloth, both in leaf structure and the way it grows. Long lanky branches that aren't as thick as the Blueberry Mid or the topped one. Even so, it appears it is going to be the heaviest yielder of them all.

We FIM'd a few of the 7-8 new tops that formed from LST'ing and the main top and left a few of the new tops un-cut to compare yields. After FIM'ing, the plant was only given approximately 1 week to recover before switching to flowering. It has given quite interesting results, with the FIM'd branches forming like hand-sized cluster of smaller nugs instead of a slightly fatter single cola. Stay tuned for reports on how those branches yielded vs the non-topped ones.

And last but not least, Sloth. This has been my retard plant since the beginning. It looks similar to the other sativa dominant plant, and is pretty stretchy. It was the first one to hermi and by far has the most seeds, with some almost mature seeds only 5 weeks into flowering. It is also the most crystalized & exotically fruity smelling one of the bunch. I've pinched a nug and dried it in the microwave, and caught a decent buzz off 2 rips....this thing is going to be a beast ladies and gentlemen. It appears that it will be the last one to finish flowering and probably the skimpiest yielder, but I'm really excited about seeing the finished product. The smell when you pick off a seed to look at it is amazing. Smells so fruity and sweet. The one that looks like it has a more tart fruity smell as opposed to the sweetness of Sloth. This plant was the first one of all of the plants to get LST'd, and it also had a few tops FIM'd to keep the stretch down since it and its twin were taking off compared to the other two.

Its a 1000 watt hps. The bulb is a hortilux superHPS which puts out 145,000 lumens, and we got it in a cool tube :)

Yeah, the little bit of extra veg time pays off in the end I guess. I don't think I'll ever just grow trees, unless I have a lot more plants and am in a hurry. Something about 12 colas on a single plant makes me :D

Man, school's out for the semester, I have nothin but time blue :) This is still my first grow, so I guess i "usually" veg for 2.5 months, since thats what we ended up with this time. Lol, we weren't planning on vegging quite as long since we were planning on having more plants, but my friend kinda killed 22 out of 27 seedlings we had in a rapid rooter flat.

Another thing that led to the long veg time was we started a group of White Rhino seeds from nirvana around Oct 30th (The 5 bag seed plants were already big enough to flower at this point) and for some reason we decided we would wait for the 10 rhinos to catch up and just flower them when they were like a month old. Well....lets just say my friend isn't too good at caring for seedlings, and of the 10 white rhinos, we have 2 like 4" seedlings (planted oct 30th, its Dec 18th and they have like 2 or 3 sets of leaves....)

So although we weren't originally going to veg them for 2.5 months, I think it worked out great in the end, gave us plenty of time to train the plants and experiment with different methods of training to see what works for us. I had some interesting results from some experiments, like FIM'ing a top on a LST'd plant only a week before flowering.

What I found works the best for the most even canopy with the most large colas is topping around 6-7 nodes & then low stress training. Where you top the plant, the main stem will quit growing up you know, so if you tie it over, you'll get about 2 colas for each node below the cut. The plant I did that to definitely looks like it is going to yield the most, and i have about 10 just giant colas on this thing, compared to about 4-6 big colas and lots of other little nugs on the other plants. (pics @ bottom: day it was topped to present)

What I'd change: I'd like to start growing from clone, because seed takes too long. We need to find a good mother. Thats going to happen next grow when we start only bought seeds. Also, I wouldn't veg quite as long, since I'd have more plants. That 1kw can definitely support more than 4 big plants, so I wanna get my money's worth. I wouldn't change a thing about the soil /nutes though, my plants loved the ocean forest soil + the fox farms system :eat:

You got any tips bear? I'm still a noob, and I lucked out and had success my first round. One thing I would suggest to fellow noobs is READ EVERYTHING YOU CAN GET YOUR HANDS ON. I've read every grow article in high times, the indoor/outdoor bible by jorge cervantes, every grow faq on the net, and tons of posts on this and other sites. Doing your homework before starting makes life so much simpler. But then again, it is a weed and will grow like one, so don't try and over-complicate things either (i'm bad about this).


Of all the different styles of training we tried, topping once then LST'ing appears to give the most even canopy / highest yield / most large nugs.

We topped it then waited a couple days then tied it over. As the new tops formed at the nodes, they grew straight up in kinda a mess. Then we trained the new tops away from each other, like from each node you got 2 tops, I'd tie one top to the left, one to the right. And got this.

Haha goals eh? Well, the *goal* would be 2.2 lbs, 1 gram for every 1 watt, but thats wishful thinking. I'd love guesses as to what I might yield this time, as pulled out of ones ass as they may be lol, cause I have no clue by looking. But yah man, were definitely planning on going with more plants/shorter veg time next time and taking clones before flowering (we didn't this time cause it was just bag seed). I don't really have a need for the LST'ing in that room either, i have tons of space, but since we only had 5 plants, we decided we were gonna go for max yield off them. That and originally we were gonna let the white rhino seedlings get big enough to flower before flowring the 5 big ones, but the rhinos did us the favor of kicking the bucket so we didn't have to wait quite as long after all lol.

Yah, 2 out of 4 plants I had went hermi. I had to decide between 2 plants worth of sensimilla, or 4 plants worth of some dank w/ seeds....I went with the 2nd choice cause the bud I got the seeds from was still good enough for me to keep save the seeds even though it was seeded, so I'm not too worried about seeded buds. Plus, I'm still on round one, i'd love to get all my fuck-ups out of the way this go around lol.

Mmmm, blueberry. My heaviest indica plant is from from some "blueberry mids" that we got one time. The mid did taste just like the real blueberry I got before, but wasn't grown quite as well, so hopefully some of the good genetics were pass on to its seeds :)

October 15th, about 1 month into veg. Still very small plants tho. This is what the first LST'd one looked like the very first day it got tied over. That's a 4" pot it's in. (btw, that little one is sloth :))

The pic w/ all the plants LST'd is from Oct 20th after they were transplanted and put under the HPS on Oct 16th. I think they were all tied over on the 17th.

I'm just extremely happy my first grow is turning out as well as it is, sorry I didn't get any new bud pics over the break, I left my camera up here, but this weekend, new bud pics for sure. The blueberry one is really starting to fatten up along w/ the topped one. Sloth and the other are still kinda skinny, but judging from the shape of their leaves they'll probably take longer to finish anyway. Sloth is stupid crystallized by now, way more than the rest. At least on its little bud leaves anyway, inside on the calyxes all plants are lookin pretty sick :)

1) I'm sure you could start man, just remember the most important step to LST'ing is a good counter-tie on your first tie. This gives the stem a point to bend at and also keeps it from pulling on the roots.

2) Nah, it didn't make transplanting too hard. After a few days you can cut the ties and the plant stays in pretty much the same shape it was. And then you simply re-tie it.

3)I kinda did that method inadvertently on sloth and the one that looks like it, but they didn't make it all the way around the pot. I tried different things, and my personal favorite is the one that I topped around the 6th node then tied over in one direction. After that, it made about 12-14 new main colas, 2 at each node, and I tied the two ones from each node in opposite directions from each other. It made the largest overall colas, but not many smaller nugs compared to the other styles. You can shape the plant however you see fit really, the only thing that remains constant is the stem has to be horizontal. Other than that, you can wrap it around the pot, bend it back across itself (thats what i did on the blueberry one) or whatever.


And feel free to ask as many questions as you want, thats the best way to learn man (besides trying something and fucking it up lol, that is the BEST way, you never forget those lessons). Lol, I'm hardly the best, just a noob that asked lots of questions and got lucky, but thanks for the compliment :D

Well, I did sample a small nug off the "blueberry" very immature, like at least 2 weeks too early. It was very light and airy, since I pulled it off the bottom anyway. It got me a slight buzz and tasted still harsh and green cause it wasn't flushed by then. But the official chop for at least 2 of the plants is this coming sunday, with probably a 1-2 week drying period after that. Then I'll have a smoke report for ya, and an even better one another 3 weeks after that once I get them cured.

Full screen this pic. All the ones on it are milky except the one I circled. I know the hairs aren't the best way to go, but you can usually get a good idea, and mine are looking close. Only sloth and the other one that looks like her were all clear trichs. The other two were mostly milky when we checked.

ZOMG. I smoked the bowl shown below with my girlfriend. I am now trashed. Great taste, creeper very up high followed by a numb brain. Kinda got a wah-wah feeling in my ears lol.

1st pic: that nug from a few days ago, dried and then cured in a nug jar for a few days.

2nd pic: Left side = my home grown, Right side = random good bud we got for $150 a half...even tho it had seeds. Mine is better lol, it suprised me, i thought it was too immature to pwn face.

First one is a pic of that blueberry one after the chop. Rest are just some random photos of the nugs hangin.

Wet weights (approx, I forgot to write it down):
Blueberry :108g
Topped one: 105g
Sloth: 87g
Girl: 110g

Total: 410g (14.6 ounces)


So basically right about a quarter pound wet from 3 of the plants and 3 ounces wet from sloth. I have no clue what that is going to dry out to.

Well, it came out to right around 4 oz bone dry, not as much as I was hoping, but I'm more than happy with the finished product. All jarred up and curing, and what I have smoked is not bad at all. All 4 plants have a unique taste, which rules. Next time I'm gonna get my moneys worth out of that 1kw hps....stay tuned :)
