yea, it is a shortened form of the spanish word "potiguaya", which means marijuana leaves.
And, according to legend, the term "marijuana" ... spelled "mariHuana" in mexico, is a term that originated between 1890-1895, when marijuana cultivation first began to be cultivated on a large scale in Mexico (and while it was still legal). It refers to a famous couple that was well-known for marijuana cultivation ... Mary Juan (not sure what the guys name was).
Any other questions?

Actually, during WWI the Germans would put all of their pep pills and morphine and any other drugs they had around and mix them in a pot and just drink that to get high. Pot came to mean all drugs pretty much but since most people only knew about marijuana, if they heard someone calling marijuana "pot", they figured it just meant marijuana, not all drugs in general. I'm just kidding, that was total bullshit.

In my nick of the woods, a bap usually means "turn around so I can punch you in the face" or that you're goose and have to chase the other kid around the circle before he gets in your seat.

you know how you cheat at that game? you punch them really hard in the back of the head, while they're laying on the ground screaming/cussing or hopefully, knocked-the-fuck-out you just drag them outta the circle and sit down.
i promise you'll win everytime.

If a wood chuck could chuck wood, a wood chuck would chuck so much wood that a wood chuck couldn't chuck wood any more. Then the wood chuck would surely go and smoke some good ole' weed.

Actually the Spanish word for Mary is MarĂ*a. "Marijuana" is a shortened form of MarĂ*a Juana (Mary Jane).
And my Dictionary of American Slang also says "pot" comes from the Mexican word potiguaya, which refers to the cannabis leaves, so that's probably the right answer.
Isn't it funny how we adopted these obscure Mexican words for weed when most Mexicans never call it that? They usually just say hierba or mota or yesca.

haha i duno but i like that word. alot of slang words make noooo sense. for example, it's "mad" cold. think about that. it makes no sense lol. even whack is pretty weird, but i use it all the time. using the word "ill" for something thats cool or w/e makes no sense too lol.
but pot.. maybe it does have a reason that its called that and i really wanna know!!!! lol. bc i feel like that slang word from marijuana had to come from somewhere. mayb where it came from doesnt make sense haha. maybe stoned people just made it up and it stuck!???? yea iduno :)
