I just joined this site from my buddy's IP address? If I ask questions in the grow forums are the cops gonna show up at my buddy's house? Can they trace us like that?

it amazes me that people think IP Spoofs hide their IP's. Those are just useful for getting into sites that Check your IP and you need to get into a site that you were blocked.

Just watch the shows on Discovery channel about how Muslim Terrorist were using Spoofs when they updated their websites thinking the FBI couldnt find them. Youll see how easy FBI can trace your computer

I know myth, don't worry. My purposes for needing such a tool are not anything of consequence.

if the fbi is already on you ass a ip spoof is not going to work yes but on the flip side local or state don't have the man power and cash to watch and listen to all networks plus the bill of right still is alive last time i checked even if the ass in the white house does not think so... sad so sad " smokes glass pipe http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/4102/mypipezh7.jpg

Zoosh

Your rights protect you from that. Even if they busted you under those circumstances, it was unconstitutional for them to monitor data being sent and received from your computer.

But the government, if anyone, are the ones capable of knowing any and everything about us and our lives..

Even if for some reason it did happen to me, I would create such a media mayhem about how the government thought it was just that important to spy on me because I was growing myself a few plants, and being a completely civil human being.

It can help to a point. But programs like PG2 only block known IP addresses.

Surf here for an easily-understood overview of Tor.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tor_%28anonymity_network%29

It won't hide you from the FBI or DEA should they take enough interest to bring their full resources to bear, but anything shy of an industrial-sized commercial grow isn't going to catch their attention.

Now that I'm thinking about it, there is something you need to worry about, but it's not your IP:

The real risk inherent in posting on these sorts of sites is that you will reveal information that allows you to be identified. I researched growing by searching the message archives of prolific posters on several sites, and in almost every case I discovered enough personal information to find the person quickly if I want to.

The chance of a local law enforcement officer searching random internet boards to find small-time pot growers is vanishingly small, but an internet acquaintance with a grudge could phone an anonymous tip to your area's police department or sheriff. I've been on the internet long enough to have seen such things happen.

As an example, below is a fact-finding review of my own posts:

1. My username hints at a limited range of occupations.
2. I have referred to my dwelling as a house.
3. I am very likely to have an Ebay user ID.
4. I mention having completed 'degrees' at an unspecified institution.
5. I have described myself as a registered, active Republican who vocally opposes prohibition and is unhappy with the party's recent behavior.
6. I cat-sat for a travelling female friend, but am otherwise unlikely to own a pet.
7. I live in or near a town that has a Lowes hardware store and a Michael's arts and crafts branch.
8. One of my relatives adopted a child from a state agency.
9. I make reference to lifting weights regularly.

Given my town/city and state - or even just state and general area - I could find myself by using the above information. If 'getting busted' could severely disrupt your life, strip your posts of personal detail.

some cover is better then none....

exactly, make em work and route it thru a friends comp or thru the school, or better yet use that site to get into this site from a school and then post. thats fun trying to explain how you got into a site like this, wspecially in the local lib another place that you can log onto here safely

Very good points CCIE. That's what I worry about as well. But then I think about the fact I am in BC and realize that cops have bigger grow-ops to worry about than a guy with 3 plants in his closet.

Besides, I was caught with an ounce of bud by narcs here (fuck Tim Horton's!) and the cops didn't even ask my name. They just wanted the bud. I was so choked that I basically got robbed of my pot by the cops, but at the same time it could've been worse if I were booked for PPT. If we didn't have this retarded war on drugs here in North America those sad excuses for protectors couldn't have stolen my weed.

Now threads like that 3LBS per plant 18 kW grow, that might be something the cops would try and investigate. In the US there are busts from info on myspace, when stupid kids think it'll be funny to show the world their crimes attached to their name & face. I'm pretty sure that any information on this public forum is fair game for them to use to get a warrant. Luckily the only place our IPs are logged is in the apache log file. I would just expect the admins of a site like this to handle that sort of data carefully. There's probably little in the logs connecting IPs to user accounts anyway, unless POST data is logged.

In short, unless you're really open about lots of personal details you will probably be safe. The internet is quite anonymous and the volume of traffic on it is just too great to be monitored in entirety.

Shit no by here I meant here in BC, physically here where I am now (well, it was up the street...). The people on this board are cool and I haven't seen anyone asking personal questions or sketchy shit like that. I have a good feeling a narc would stand out online as much as they do in real life.
