I am trying again to see if anyone has any info on whether or not there is a "safe" distance (time wise) between smoking and breasfeeding. I pump and store and want to know, medically, if I'm safe at any time to smoke while breastfeeding. Thanks!

Whether it is safe to give a baby breastmilk with THC is a huge debate because there are so few studies and this is a touchy subject. I will not say one way or another whether it is safe or harmful because I don't want to get blasted. However, I will tell you that THC remains in breastmilk for several days after smoking. In fact, if you smoke several times over a few day period, the THC level in breastmilk can be higher than bloodstream levels because it gets concentrated. If you do not want your baby to have THC then you should wait about 3-5 days after a single session and maybe 5-8 days after multiple sessions.
Now you are going to get a bunch of responses from people still in high school.

FakeBoobsRule is an interesting choice of names for a breastfeeding question, isn't it? But I know FakeBoobs didn't just name himself/herself (are you a man or a woman?) for purposes of breast-related threads. The other strangely related tidbit here is that the only time in my life I was ever accused of having breast implants was when I was nursing my son. What a lovely, busty time that was.
Narrows, I'm still hoping Storm Crow will see this thread and chime in with any information she may have seen on this topic. You can never go wrong with what your own doctor and respected pregnancy/lactation advice books tell you on this topic, however, and that's to avoid the chance of transmitting THC, other cannabinoids or any associated weed chemical contents to your baby via breast milk. Plenty of women make the self-centered choice to do that anyway, I know, but doctors advise against it for the same reason they tell you to avoid transmitting other meds to the baby that way--because it's a huge unknown and one with dangerous potential.
As far as concrete in-depth research goes, no research organization is going to spend any time or effort seriously testing the safety and efficacy of marijuana use during lactation simply because the stakes are too high with infants, who are forming all those critical neural pathways in their brains as they're nursing (and throughout infancy and childhood). Wouldn't you rather err on the side of caution where a vulnerable infant is concerned? I ask this not only as a mother but as a medical student who's leaning heavily in the direction of either pediatrics or ob-gyn for my specialty. If the choice really does boil down to cannabis vs. nursing for you, then perhaps you'd consider switching to bottle feeding if you can't postpone smoking for a little longer?

Look at my join date and number of posts. Seems a little impossible that I joined just today to post in this thread. I like my silly screen name because it is the way I feel and when I have to be serious at work all day long I like to have fun. Just because of the name doesn't mean I don't give good advice. Look at my profile and you will see why.
I said that about the H.S. because they like to give advice in the drug testing forum about how drinking bleach will pass a piss test and that hair tests can go back years and if you hold your breath and run around in circle before a piss test you will pass.

It's a highly debatable topic... I wouldn't smoke while breastfeeding, any if you only smoke a small to moderate amount, I don't see how it could severely hurt the baby, but I would hold on just in case.

Thanks for the replies. I am def. leary of smoking while breastfeeding, and that's why I am looking for info. I feel like if I find some medical facts that say it's OK, then I would be safe to smoke. But I still haven't and don't think I will. Once the baby is weaned, whenever that is, I will partake. I just miss smoking and cigarettes too!

Yes, I noticed all that because your name surprised me. But I still said it anyways as a joke :p.
