No, your friend isn't dumb. You can sure as hell burn with organics. Especially young plants that aren't ready for ferts yet. Chicken manure is organic, but you can easily burn even mature, strong plants with it, it's so freaking powerful. And guano is up there with the strongest of the organic ferts.
