I have a 3 or 4'x21/2'x5' area that I am going to use a 400W HPS. I was woundering how many plants I should grow to get the most out of my light and plants. I dont wana take away any lighting from plants by crowding the area. What do you think will be the proper number.
Peace,

Two plants would be my suggestion, three if you don't veg them too awfully long.

Well I honestly will veg untill about 12" tall, then I switch over. So with 2 plants I could veg a little longer? Im just woundering because you know the .5 gram per watt is ideal, but it probably wont happen for me so they set your sites on half of that so I figure I should get around 200g will that happen with 2 plants?

Honestly im moving into a new place, but its a duplex so im kinda worried about the smell. Im having my main room in one of the 3 walk in closets that has the attic access. So hopefully it will work out. Also you guys know of anybody with used equipment they are looking to sell. Also any suggestions or help would be great.

Well I say start six to ten seedlings, then choose the best females, keeping as many as you think you can.

Well I think I have a hook up on some clones so I shouldnt have to deal with seeds. Also here is my closet. I took a pic for you guys, I was planning on just using a corner but it is in a spare room and I guess I could use the whole closet. Let me know what you guys think about the space and which direction I should go. Im sure I could fit close to 6-7 plants in there, but I want my plants to get the most out of the light. So any suggestions would be great.

Eight ounces off two plants is totally possible. I recommend you ScroG them though, so you don't have to worry as much about light penetration. Try three plants to start. If it gets really bushy in there, then you'll know the next time to either use two plants or veg for a shorter amount of time. Sometimes you just have to experiment to get a feel for what works best for you, and get the timing right and stuff. Worst case, with three plants, if gets too overcrowded, you can pull one out, but with two plants, if that's not enough, it'd be too late to do much about it, so I guess three makes sense for a trial run. ;)
Looks like enough space to me too. What are your ventilation plans? 400-watt light will generate some heat, and you can't keep it bottled up in there. That was always the prob I had with closets: the woman didn't want me hacking or sawing on the walls or doors or anything, so that pretty much ruled out closets for me, except in emergency situations for a short period of time.

I'd say 4 to 10 depends on whether you want to lst scrog or sog

So I want to use the LST method. I have read a little about and was woundering if you guys could point me to guide or a how to. Also I think 3 LST plants would make pretty good use of my space. Now what kind of timing do you guys use when Vegging while using the LST meathod??

I used 24h on but some people prefer 18/6 or 20/4

I will probably use 18/6, so is my veg while I LST them going to be about 30-35 days or so?

Depends on how big you want them to get, really. Here's a couple of pics. The first pic is three Indica-dominant plants (White Rhinos on the sides, AK-48 in the middle) that were vegged for around 10 weeks (had to leave town, didn't want to flower until I got back). The fact that the ScroG screen went basically unused in the first pic is because of that long veg time -- the plants just exploded when they went into flowering and I had to fight them all the way through flowering. That pic was taken pretty late in flowering, day 45 or 50 I'd guess.
The second pic is a Sativa-dominant plant (Durban Poison x Skunk #1) that was vegged for six MONTHS (but most of that time in a 1/2 gallon pot, which limited its growth), and the pic is after 9 days of flowering (which means that plant will grow at least another foot or two, maybe more, maybe a lot more). The cabinet in the first pic is 20 inches deep, 47 inches wide, 6 feet tall.
Your closet would fit two plants like those in the first pic, but might not handle even one plant like the one in the second pic.
