I got some freebie seeds in 2005, Durban Poison x Skunk #1. Well, I tried to germinate them in April 2006, all ten of them, but only one sprouted. (I guess they're free for a reason.) It's a Sativa-dominant strain, and I'm kinda height-constrained, so I almost killed this plant a number of times, but couldn't bring myself to do it, so it vegged for nigh six months in a 1/2 gallon pot. It got rootbound and droopy, but kinda big even so. I FIM'd it, got three main stalks, and pruned for yield a few times too, to bush it out some.
Well, a couple of week or so ago, I decided, what the hell, let's see if I can flower this thing. So, I transplanted it to a 5-gallon pot, and threw it in my flower cabinet (where I normally ScroG Indica-dominant strains). Inside the cabinet is a 400-watt HPS Hortilux. I thought perhaps the penetration of a 400-watt bulb would not be adequate, so I have sort of surrounded the plant with accent CFLs, eight 30-watt warm CFLs, and two 105-watt 4100k CFLs, for a total of 400 watts HPS and 450 watts of CFLs.
When I showed the woman this plant, she said, "Wow, that's a big mama!" So, that's what we named the plant, Big Mama. It's been in flowering 9 days now, and in that time it grew another foot. Nine days into flowering and I already have to tie it over to keep it from burning on the HPS light, which is pretty much as high as it can go.
Is this going to be doable, or is this plant going to grow too big for me? Who knows! I reckon I'm gonna find out though! Hopefully it'll be interesting, so I'm posting this here so anyone who wants to can watch me battle with this plant for the next couple of months.
I took some clones from it today (9 days into flowering). Not sure how those will come out, but we'll see. Not a big deal if they don't, really, but I figured I'd try, so there are 12 clones in a 30-site EZ-Cloner bubbling away. It IS a really nice plant, so if the clones come out, I'll find a way to make use of them. I won't veg them for six months like I did with this plant though. Heh.
Anyway, here's a pic from today, 9 days into flowering. Wish me luck! ;)

YOUR BIOTCH IS FAT and FURRY!!!

By the time that monster is done you'll be able to climb her up to the giants lair but you might get stuck in the sticky buds at the top! I hope you have cathedral ceilings in that room.
How's your hydrohut coming? I've got a mini that will be here Tuesday and I'm interested in how you set up your ventilation - if you have any pix, Id appreciate it and any feedback you can give about setting it up.
I was hoping you were gonna start a thread about this Durban...

That bitch is wild! It needs to be tied down! Tie that sucker down and I bet it would yield crazy weight. Get some light and ventillation between those stems. Looks fun!

HydroHut is on the way, should be here sometime next week, along with a little carbon filter. Right behind it in another order placed the following day is a 1000-watt light, a 4" centrifugal fan, a light hanger, duct clamps and miscellaneous stuff. Gonna be a tight squeeze setting up that hut (did some measuring), but I think I can make it work somewhere. I *hope* I'll get it all next week, but the second order, maybe not.
Might have to untie this bitch and put her in that hut once both orders are here. If plants can triple in height, this plant could be pretty big. Not sure how big a plant can get in a 5-gallon pot though, anyone know? I mean, if it was a 15-gallon pot, sure, I could see a 9- or 10-foot monster, but I think the pot size will limit it at least some. Please tell me that's the case!
Either way, I guess using the 1000-watt light on this plant will make the most sense, although because of circuit breakers it's basically either this surround-it-with-light 400-watt setup in this cabinet, or just the 1000-watt light alone in the hut. I'll have to swap the light cycles if I put it under the 1000 too, since I'll want to run that at night (cold weather coming, might as well utilize the extra heat at night, and run the 400-watt + CFLs during the day).
What would you guys do with this plant, given the choice between the cab in the pic, or a HydroHut with a 1000-watt light? I'm no expert here, always glad to listen to folks! ;)
(Oh, and sure, I'll post some pics of the hut once it's set up!)

Big Mama's doing fine, still in my flower cabinet. Going to move her to a HydroHut with a 1k light sometime this week, assuming my ballast gets here as scheduled. Got her tied this way and that way to keep the buds off the cooltube. Once I move Big Mama to the hut, I'll see about tying her down more horizontally, but not a lot of room for that in this cabinet, so just doing what I have to to get by. This pic is from day 17 of flowering. Something like day 200 from seed though. Lol! ;)

Just got ballast today. More or less got my modified HydroHut standard ready to go now. (I had to chop about five inches off the vertical supports with a hacksaw to get it to fit, sucker's huge!) Here's a pic, kinda boring I know. I'll probably throw Big Mama in there tonight and see how the temps are. Probably a little too warm since the weather just suddenly turned Spring-like again, but I might as well give it a go. It's nighttime for Big Mama at the moment, so gotta wait until it's morningtime for her, then toss her in there and see how it goes. ;)

Looks like an excellent home for Big Mama. Very clean-looking. Is that your 1000w in there?
How tall is she? How tall was she when you put her into flower? That reminds me of 'my' big plants in the main flowering room. They are not as filled out as yours (mostly cuz of the stretch at the bottom) but they sure are huge. About 50" last time I checked.
Keep it up, I cant wait to see what that yeilds. I am also very interested in seeing how tall she grows...double? triple?
*gets distracted*

Whew, 1k light = hot. Temps got as high as 88 degrees. I did some playing around and was able to get it down to 79 degrees, by leaving half a flap of the hut open with a box fan pushing cool air into the hut, and with the 4" centrifugal fan disconnected from the carbon filter. Not exactly ideal! So I need a 6" 440ish CFM fan. But the budget doesn't allow for that at the moment, so I'm just gonna have to make do for now. I could swap the 6" fan in my wood flower cabinet with this 4" one, but everything is working so well with the wood cabinet that I just don't want to mess with that setup.
Big Mama got a little droopy from the heat before I got it more or less under control, and she just kinda expanded all over the place with all that available space, so I tied her up a bit and fed her. She should perk up by lights on time tonight. Buds appearing all over the place.
Oh, size. Well, I don't really know how big she was when I transplanted her (and a week after that I began flowering). I'd say she's doubled in overall size though, maybe even triple if you count volume rather than just height. Height, counting 10" for the pot, was around 48" at day 9 of flowering, then she grew probably another foot since then (the pic is day 19). But the taller stalks are bent into S's. I'd guess she'd be around 5 feet tall if I hadn't made S's of the main stalks, NOT counting the pot.
Have no clue what to expect on yield; this is the first 1k light I've ever used, and first predominantly Sativa strain I've ever grown too. I'll hope for the best, of course, but I'll be happy with whatever happens. How can I complain when I get a nice learning experience AND some buds? ;)

Damn Jams, Big Momma is giving me Big Wood. :D I'm with Ms Stinky; tie that bitch up and impose your will! ;)
What brand of ballast did you go with for the new 1k bulb, another Lumatek? I've also contemplated getting a Hut, but settled on taking the cheap route and constructing my own out of wood and white paint.
What kind of diet have you had her on? Did you use a root stimulant?
Awesome looking job as usuall, bravo, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little jealous.

Naw, not digital. I don't want to be a beta tester and the 1k digital ballasts out there haven't been around that long, so I decided to go with the old technology this time and got this:
http://www.bghydro.com/BGH/Itemdesc.asp?ic=HLBAHPS10SSVI&eq=&Tp=
No real prob with it, although it's huge and heavy at 44 pounds. The ballast didn't seem to get all that hot, and the hum is muted enough that I can't hear it over the fans.
The reflector (which is quite nice!) is this one:
http://www.bghydro.com/BGH/Itemdesc.asp?ic=HLRECB6&eq=&Tp=
I don't really get too fancy with nutes, FoxFarm Ocean Forest soil, FoxFarm Grow Big (veg), Big Bloom (flower) and Tiger Bloom (flower). I have some other stuff laying around, but if the plants don't start screaming for something, I just try to keep it simple. They're usually happy with just those nutes generally.
One reason that I like the hut is I can take it down in the summer if I want to. Since I doubt I'll be able to run that 1k light in the summer, I could just tear it all down and box it away until the fall/winter. I'll still have my other box during the summer, which is situated much closer to an AC unit, but might as well make use of this extra heat in the winter! ;)

Looking great Jam!! Chopping those few inches off the hut didn't hurt it at all. Do you see what I mean about the light-tightness (or lack thereof) through the vent flaps?? I'm sure you'll get the heat issues dealt with...I'm thinking of one of theose portable air conditioners to use next summer myself but since I live only 4 blocks from the beach, it doesn't get as hot here as it does inland so I may be alright.

Not a clue what the flowering time is, and whatever they say might not be accurate anyway, as I don't think this is a 'recommended' strain for indoor growing, being so predominantly Sativa (87.5 percent Sativa, from what I read). I'll just go with the flow and start checking the trichs when I'm at eight weeks. If it takes 10 or 12, well, I'll deal with it. Not like I can do anything about it!
I'm glad GK told me to take some clones! I shouldn't have waited until 9 days into flowering to do it, but I see roots coming from at least 6 of them now (out of 12). If it takes a while to reveg them (assuming they live once I take them out of the EZ-Cloner), that's okay with me. After seeing this plant, I would like to grow one more bigger crop of these (4 or 6 plants maybe), then move on and try something else (Jock Horror maybe). That's one of the nice advantages of growing your own: you get to sample various strains, and YOU get to decide what they are; you're not at the mercy of whatever happens to be available from Random_Dealer. ;)
And yeah, I see what you mean about the lightproofness, doco. I just piled some boxes around those flaps during the dark period, and it's pretty dark in that room anyway. Hopefully that's good enough.
that is a hell of a set up and plant i want to be like you:thumbsup:

Hey Jam, finally checking in on here. Sounds like you have your hands full. Remember I said that inline would probably not do the trick for the light, but we live and learn, just like with the cabs as you know, there is always a little tweaking to get it right, but comes with the turf.
If you took clones that early, they may just root with normal rooting time without problems. Well, will check in now and then to peep this wild octopus out.

Wow, thats a monster, jam. I'm gonna be fighting some fairly large beasts once its finally flowering time in the garden of Splif. The girls should be somewhere near 3-4 months old by that point, cause the damn rhino seeds wanted to get here at just the right time to make me want to grow them this round too lol. I should have waited and started the rhinos after flowering these, but oh well, patience is a virtue :)

Here's a pic of the clones. I took 12 cuttings when Big Momma was 9 days into flowering (should've listened to GK and done it sooner). All of them showed roots, so I kept the ten with the best-looking roots and put them in pots. They all had a little bud on top, so I pinched those off. Now I guess I wait and see if they revert to veg okay. I'll give them a week before they get any nutes.
The ten clones is so I can try 2-3 Big Mommas in a ScroG in my original flowering cab (which I am using for veg at the moment, since I can), plus another 6 in the HydroHut, plus a final plant to take more clones off of. Heh, might suck on Big Momma's teat for a while, maximize the value I get from that one freebie seed that germinated! ;)

Hey, Jam. Nice clone shots. So you're gonna have lots of things going on at once now, huh? It's so confusing trying to keep up with all the flowering & veg cycles, and trying to make them line up so you always have smoke, huh (I'd assume).
So, you took those clones when she was only 9 days into flower, right? I've always read that it is best avoided taking clones during flowering, which, I know you are aware of. I would always try to follow this, BUT one of the plants in 'my' main room, which also corresponds to one of the plants in the rubbermaid growbox, looks like some really dank stuff and 'I' don't have any remnants of it's kind after these 2 are harvested...:(
They are 6-8 weeks into flower...too late to clone? I think I might try just as an experiment. I hope to update today to catch up.
How's Big Mama lookin'?
Be cool.

Why not just leave a few lower branches and try to reveg then clone? Although I don't see how it could hurt:)

Heh, my main worry now is that I might end up in the hospital. Got an appointment with a doctor next Wednesday (six more days, oof), prostate is hurting me bad. I'm the right age for such probs, so it's not like a shock, but ow, it hurts! The only thing keeping me going day-to-day at this point are some kickass brownies, been eating four a day, got enough oil to last me about 11 more days.
My doctor is an Indian (from India) guy. I've never met him, but I'm kinda mentally picturing him as being like Apu from the Simpsons. If he says the word 'squishy' while his hand is up my butt, I'm gonna fall down laughing. ;)

Seein' the doc today. Big Mama's looking fine. Looks like she might have gotten pollinated some, not sure. If so, then it was by a Blue Mystic male, and that won't bother me, as that might be an interesting mix. Clones are revegging now, and looking better, new 3-fingered leaves and other signs of successful reveg.
Anyway, here's a couple Big Mama pics, day 32 of flowering completed.
