I have a friend that I'm growing with that keeps opening the door when lights go out for the day...
I tell him that it's not a good idea to do this when the plants are sleeping...
I've read on here that the plants need total undisturbed darkness untill lights are scheduled to go back on....
So could someone tell me if this is true or not...and tell me what could happen if they are disturbed when lights are out?

.
You mean during 12/12 flowering? They must be in completely undisturbed darkness. Some hormon that gets destroyed within only a minute of light.
Then they remain in veg. status, but slow veg. status because they're getting the light ransoned.

Looking at them while they sleep is not going to harm them..no. But your friend shouldn't be making it a habit either. Ask him how he would like it if someone came into his room every night after he had gone to bed and snooped around.
if he makes it a habit and does it every night carelessly.. yes.. it could affect the plant. But looking at it a few times at night during the grow won't hurt.

hmmm... then why do you need to turn the lights on for a good 10 minutes every night for a good 10-14 days in order to hermie a plant?
Consider this, if you were growing at night would the stars and moon create a pitch black atmosphere? No...

My guess would be to stress it into confusion about what season it is, and to attempt to pollinate itself as a last survival-of-its-genes effort.
I'm sure you know much more about this than I, but I must add that I've read my theory a bunch of times in different guides.

Well... i know i was able to look at my plants during the off cycle and never really created any problems..
My setup was hardly what i would call "light leak proof" but overall.. when the lights went out.. they had undisturbed dark.
Never turn your lights back on...in your grow room once they've gone off. That would wake the plants up within a matter of minutes...do it enough times.. and yes, it confuses the plant into going hermie.
If you're going to look at your plants during the off cycle.. make it quick and don't turn the "growing" lights on. Use ambient light from another room or a small flashlight
Besides, watching plants sleep is like watching paint dry.. what's the point?

haha this made me laugh, but watching it sleep is just as interesting as watching it "awake", I mean its not doing any thing visual different..or is it..
and tell your friend to F off, all he's doing is messing with the plants mind..infact show him this thread if he tells you otherwise.

Heh, suddenly I had this image of my plants slithering their stems around each other and being photosynthetic lesbians when I'm not watching and when the light's off...and then they hear the floorboards nearby creak and they pop back to their normal positions just as the door opens...

only to have them grow testicles for all that intrusive peeping.

Yeah well I don't have the problem with looking at them while they're sleeping but when they're awake they're juss so tight to look at...
BobBong...your pretty much the reason I started growing I looked at your thread and saw how easy it was to grow under cfls... Got a lot of ideas from you and all the other people that grow with CFL's...all that reading is paying off big time!
