WASHINGTON â?? The Senate on Friday approved and sent to President Bush a bill calling for construction of a 700-mile wall along the U.S. border with Mexico, voting overwhelmingly for a project that became the centerpiece of efforts to improve border security and stem illegal immigration.

Bush is expected to sign the measure into law.

"Most immigrants come to America with good intentions, but not all of them," Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) said in supporting the bill. "We need an enforcement-first approach â?¦ [that] allows us to get full operational control of our border."

The bill, which passed 80 to 19 and is identical to legislation passed by the House last week, authorizes the building of double-layered fencing in areas near Tecate and Calexico, Calif., and border towns in New Mexico, Arizona and Texas.

It also empowers the government's Homeland Security secretary to "take all actions â?¦ necessary" to stop "all unlawful entries into the United States."

Man, that's gonna take a huge amount of labor. But we can always hire the illegal immigrants from Mexico for that and save tons of money...and then when they're done, boot 'em to the other side and slam the doors shut real quick and laugh like Nelson on the Simpsons! ;)

If we spend a billion $ on a fence, and they spend $5 on a ladder, who wins? Halliburton, of course. Sorry, it was a trick question.

Gotta correct myself, while they approved the fence the included no money to actually build it. And it will fool quite a few people, that's the funny part.

Why are we talking about illegal immigration right now? Because all the conservative talkshow hosts are talking about illegal immigration right now.

Now we have to ask ourselves why they're talking about illegal immigration when they've ignored it for all these decades. --Because it's a distraction from the War and elections are coming up. In other words, it's the only thing they have to talk about because everything else is going so badly. It's the one issue they can draw a supportive emotional response from and get voters all worked up about.

No one has any intention at all to do anything about illegal immigration beyond the most gratuitous gesture--and only then because they've spent the last several months shooting their mouth off about it.

They could stop illiegal immigration almost overnight. But no one with wealth and power wants that to happen. It's one of the reasons they have all that wealth and power to begin with.

I agree, Hamlet. I support the idea of getting some security down on the border, but the only reason they're even talking about it is to appease growing dissent over Iraq.

The republicans in power are by a majority not conservative. Not by a long shot.

What in gods name is the point. Building a fence that doesnt even go across the whole border? Thats like taking a shower with less than half the curtain(horrible analogy). In other words, what is the purpose of a fence that is built to keep people out but only goes so far. Imagine you have a fence in your backyard. And you only build it 1/3 long as its supposed to be. If someone or something wants to get into your yard they simply walk around the fence. It is so pointless. And if they actually do finish it and build it all the way, they should electrify it so when people try to cross they get shocked. And they should build it 20 feet down so no people can dig under it.
