Ok I rent a top half of a house, and its heated by gas heat. after winter was done with in like april I turned off the heat alltogether, and now i wanna start it up again...I have to go downstairs and ask if I can turn on the piliot light. I shouldn't really have to do anything else should I? should I have kept it running just a little bit all year around? I've just never had gas heat before....

Yeah, just go down and ask them to light the pilot again. It's easy to do, you just turn the furnace back on, take a long BBQ lighter, light it and there you go, heat.
And yeah, you should just keep it on year round. When summer rolls around, I usually just turned the heat right down so the pilot would stay lit, but it woudn't fire up because of temps outside.

Ahh gas heat. that shit takes me back a few winters to a place i was renting where the pilot light kept going out. I'd have to get up 2 or 3 times a night to re-light it. Told the landlord several several times but he didn't do shit about it.

If it's forced-air, you should change the filter, especially since it has been off all summer. If it's just a little furnace, vacuum out any dust that is kicking around otherwise you'll be sneezing!
