View Full Version : $20,000 to spend.. What car to buy?
tekneeqs

Hi all,
I have about 20Gs to spend (that's Canadian currency) and looking for a compact to mid size car.
I'm thinking about the 2002-2003 Acura RSX Type-S, 2000-2002 Toyota Celica GTS, or 2002+ Infiniti G35 Sedan (the coupe is a dream-car, but its too expensive =/).
I was also considering the Audi A 1.8T and Cadillac CTS, but this isn't really my style, they look like they should be driven by someone older.
Just here to hear other's opinions on these cars or any other, so if anyone have suggestions or opinions for a nice car within this price range, I'd love to hear it!
Thanks!

definitely go with the celica. but if you want 255 horses under your hood... for under 15g's... i have a little secret for you... NISSAN. the 2002 Nissan maxima. 255 horses for around 14 grand kelly blue book price. i did the math, this car has the MOST HORSES PER DOLLAR, then any other car on the market (that i could find haha, but i looked PRETTY DAMN HARD)

my mother had a celica GTS; not impressed; drove it quite a bit; SLOPPY pedestrian automatic transmission; if you're getting a sports car BE SURE to get manual tranny; that damn sluggish auto tranny made my old civic feel peppy :) had some silly "push button" "manual" tranny but it was terrible and completely useless......awful..........
IMHO get yourself a nice used bmw; otherwise i'd lean toward the infiniti; or something else german such as a jetta; quite fond of german styling

A celica is a chicks car, save yourself the embrassment.
Look for a used Lexus SC400 or SC300. Lexus are the most reliable cars on the planet.

Wow I cant believe so many people are actually recommending the celica. If you do get a celica, make sure you tint the windows pitch black so nobody knows that there is a guy inside it! Not to mention that it is extremely underpowered, expecially when compared to the 280hp G35 sedan you are comparing it to. That, and just about every other car on the road would blow the doors off a celica.

This one.... a used Jetta wagon.
Then take the extra 10,000 and get that mofo tinted and put the most ridiculous sound system you can think of in it.
Mmmmm!
(I have one. I'm in love with it! Even the stock system sounds awesome!)

Get a used '81 DeLorean DMC12.You have just about enough for 1 in superb shape.Anyone remember the DeLorean?Stainless steel body and gull wing doors? You can get a new 1(All new parts on a used frame) for about 40grand US.That's what I have my eye on.A new 1 with the turbocharge option.
This was the first general production car to offer anti-lock brakes as well as several other safety features as standard equipment. Also the first to have fuel injection instead of a carb.Too bad the FBI framed the designer for coke dealing. He was aquitted of all charges, but by then his car company was bankrupt. The Delorean DMC12 (http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?car_id=205582292&dealer_id=58080857&car_year=1981&search_type=both&num_records=&make=DELOREAN&transmission=&model=&distance=0&make2=&address=77640&advanced=&certified=&max_mileage=&max_price=&bkms=1160761411987&sort_type=priceDESC&min_price=&body_code=0&end_year=2007&color=&start_year=1981&drive=&engine=&fuel=&doors=&style_flag=1&cardist=80)

I use to work at a Auto Auction so I got to clean and drive alot of cars. On a regular day at least 50 and on sale day I would drive at least 100 cars. I use to like the Celica until I worked there. IMO I would never buy it. The Acura or Infiniti are really good cars. I love there interior ( that was my job Driver side interior) so I know alot about the inside of vehicles.
Audi's are also nice. When I first got in one it took me forever to figure out how to put the damn thing in reverse. You had to push the gear shit down and then put it into reverse. Anyways Those 3 cars or like someone said above a nice use BMW would be my picks. What I like about those is they look great straight from the factory. You dont have to do much to enhance the look. Once you put a system, tinted windows, rims, and euros your good to go. You dont need a body kit to make a BMW look bad ass.

Why the Hell is everyone saying the middle one, shit get the infinity it is far more supierer then the rest, and will drive a hell lot smoother. Plus you will have the HIDs High Intesity Discharge lights. Thats what I have on my infinity and its alot better at lighting up the road then halogens, and it looks tight. Defently go for the infinity if you can get you hands on one, and if thats what you want.

I'm definitely surprised with the crowd's favor being the Celica.
I was actually leaning towards the RSX Type S with its "legendary" engine.

I love my Scion tC, get one of those :D
They are very roomy even tho it doesnt look like it from the outside.
Its pretty quick too. Go test drive one. Plus you can get a brand new one with 20k.
If not that then go with the RSX, had one of those also. Very nice car indeed.

I also suggest a used Volkswagen Jetta, '01 or '02 will run you about $10,000 - $12,000 here in Canada and IMO are much more reliable than the cars you've listed, not to mention that all of the stock parts are actually really sweet for stock parts. Awesome on gas, and extremely reliable. Saves you $8,000 plus the countless other thousands you'll save over the years on it not guzzling your cars and not falling apart every 25000km

1. i know more about cars than anyone on this forum
2. im drunk
3. thats a toyota FJ(most badass car ever) not a Jeep
4. toyota is the greatest car company in the world but dont get the celica
5. scoobies are sweet you should definately consider getting a wrx especially if you live in an area that gets snow
6. the acura rsx does not have a locking glove box; a glove box that locks is essential for any true stoner
7. out of the three you posted the infiniti is the best choice.

wrx is too expensive and they're a car theft's gem..
I dont really care about the locking glove box, at all..
how much more expensive are the G35x than the ones without 4wheel drive?
anything wrong with the RSX?

Get the Audi for christ's sake. Toyota's are shit compared to either of those. The RSX is a good baseline Honda and will be very reliable the infiniti is a POS, Nissan to be exact, but the Audi or RSX will definetly be a great car.

Audi isnt total quality.. they consistently rank towards the bottom in vehicle dependability studies.
Nice cars, but not reliable. Expecially when compared to Acura/Honda, which are considered to be top quality.

Get the g35 all wheel drive or get the wrx. I got a Q45 and a Subaru Legacy and they are both sweet rides. Infinit for luxury and power, Subaru for bad weather. All wheel drive is the shiznit. Look at the new Legacy you can get stock with a Porsche Boxster engine, 0-60 in 5.2 and all wheel drive. They're like 35 g's but I just thought I'd throw that out there cuz they are sweet and I'm gonna get one.

i didnt bother reading the other posts. but the celica i heard is some ass from my neighbors (dont know why). the audi is nice but hard to come upon parts for (my dad manages a dealer/autobody shop). if you can afford the g35 that would be the way to go. i have the rsx type s, and its soo nice. pretty fast, nice leather, stiff suspension but its meant to go fast. its a really nice car. or look at an older model 3 series bmw, those are good cars.
oh yeah, the acura is soo fun to drive, i love the quick-shift 6 speed, and it sounds soo nice at high rpms. the only car ive lost to in a race so far has been the new corvette

Yup, same maker; IMO a VW is a much better value than an Audi and the stuff that comes stock on them is nice. Like I believe the stock stereo is make by Blaupunkt, anyway, I've owned 2 Jettas. And once you find a mechanic who is one of those weird VW fanatic/wizard/obsessive guys, upkeep is really reasonable. Just the dealerships DO charge a lot in my experience.

To be quite honest, I hate the way VW's exterior look--it's too damn square for my taste. The interior, now that's a different story...
Yay, so the Celica is out of the picture now. I asked a couple of my girl friends and they all suggested the RSX because the Celica is played out and apparantly its a girl's ride (I'd agree only if this was the Celica GT we're talking about, the GTS and TRD is a man's ride no doubt). I'm still contemplating wether to spend less money and get the RSX (approx. $16,000 for the 02-03 Type S in Canada) and spend the rest of my money on a nice set of 18's and a sound system OR spend a little more cash for a A4 1.8T or G35 (approx. $18,000-20,000).
I appreciate the community's inputs, very informative =D
