I mean like just throwing the seeds in a pot of dirt and watering it, why wouldn't that work? Obviously it won't be superior quality or grow as fast, but it would still be smokeable I assume. I bought some good (but seedy) bud and I decided to throw a couple seeds in a pot and hope for the best.

I suppose it won't be the best because all the lights, fans etc that people use are there to try to recreate the natural growing environment. There's a thread in one of the other sections called Diary of a Madman (i think) and the guy basically just germinated some seeds and gave them only natural light. They were really stretched after a while and didn't have a chance. Of course, this would depend where you live and what the climate is like and so on.
Growing is a bit of a balancing act it seems to me. At the moment, I've spent a bit of cash getting a decent setup and after I've done all this, I figure out that the PH in my water isn't the best so I have to get some PH down to sort that out. Now I'm thinking the temps could be lower so I'm wanting to get a cool tube as well. There's always something else that can use improvement y'know. I think it'll be worth it in the end though :)

Well DeMetto,
That does work. I have a couple friends that do just that. Quality is a result of genectics you can not control that if you wanted. Growth will depend on the the amount of light as well as the proper use of fertilizer. Remember that fertilizer is food. I'm amazed at how many people try to grow without it. It's like you trying to survive without food. It just don't work that way. It's great you want to try and grow your own but with the time involved to harvest you the fewer mistakes you make the less you time you waste.
P.S. I always say if you want big buds you need big roots. One plant per pot. Several plants in one pot is like five inmates sharing one cell. You see where I'm coming from?
Quality of smoke is in the genetics, but it all depends on environment.
Plants grown well can yeild serveral oz per plant, but plants that are not cared for can yeild as little as 1 gram, or just die.

sad things is i have seen plants with less than a few grams on it because people dont want to learn properly how to grow and it isnt that hard.....
