View Full Version : Extracting Pollin From A Male

I unfortunatly ended up with a nice healthy Male, and a semi healthy female. Since it didn't work out as planned in my small cabinet. I was thinking about trying to put them together for some seeds. So I wont have to buy anymore for some time.
I have read about pollinating a branch of a female to get some seeds, By putting a bag or capturing pollin onto a paper towel. then wrapping it around the female branch. and sealing it. My small female really only has one main stem.
So do you think I can just leave the plants together in my cab and not have to capture the pollin from the big male to wrap around my female? Or should I bag my male and try and capture pollin to dust onto my female. Can Pollin stay active in a bag for a while? can it be stored to be used in another grow?
Im hoping I can just leave the plants together and have the pollin fly onto the female plant. But If I have to capture some pollin and wrap it on the female I will do my best. I just want to see if anyone esle has done this process Indoors. The male is twice her size. Male is BoggleGum and the Femnale is BlueJay. I just want some seeds cuz they run about 100CAD for 10 in the city here. PLus my female is pretty ruff around the edges. I will never judge plants by their pre flowers ever again. (I will only learn that one once) hahahahahah
And I guess the other question, should I turn off my Exaust fan to help keep the pollin in the cabinet,
The plants are 9 days into flowering.
Any help or comments is greatly appreciated.
Thanks Kindly

If you want them to pollinate, just leave them together with the fan on.
You will get all the seeds you want.
Just remember to let them ripen pretty much all the way before harvesting- as long as you see them starting to develop the spotting pattern, and turning brown, they're nearly ripe and can come down.

Perfect Thanks A bunch Stinky.....
Your the Best...
Is there any point in taking the Male out at a certin time Like say after I see the seeds on the Female or am certin the female is pollinated? TO provide more light to My seeder plant? Or is it best to just leave them togetehr the whoel process?
Thanks Kindly...

When you see seeds starting to form the male is no longer needed. You can take him out.

Oh yeah and I forgot to say, cut him back and hang on to him... Bogglegum is going to be RARE... you can even send him to me! I'll give him a nice home!:D

Do you have to pollinate a female to get seeds?
Can you not just get them off a male plant? I want to do this my self so i'd like to know. Thanks
kdspecial
09-27-2006, 04:16 PM
Yeah I read your post about that Strain. Boggle Gum and wondering where BOG has gone. I will send you some seeds if it all works out well.
Thanks so much Stinky.. For this and everything. I will post some picts on this thread of the progress. Im only 9 days in so It will be a while.
Any ideas on if pollen can be stored in a bag to use later? I could send you some Pollin.. hahahah Im in Canada so I doubt I could mail him that far but after this I have no space for him. I could try..
thanks again

So you have to a male and a female to get seeds,
and what happens does the female grow the seeds when it gets pollinated? or what do you do to get seeds?
stinkyattic
09-27-2006, 06:46 PM
does the female grow the seeds when it gets pollinated??
Yes.
You will start to see really obvious seed development in about a week after pollination.

Thanks Stinkyattic man Big help,
I have a bug bud strain and an unknown Jamaican strain could i pollinate a female big bud with the male Jamaican strain, and would anything happen?
Cheers mate.
stinkyattic
09-27-2006, 07:37 PM
Yeah, you'd get a seeded female BigBud and you could grow out the BigBudxJamaican offspring to see if you get anything worth keeping for future cloning or breeding projects.
I'm not a breeder so I can't tell you how great that cross could be, but learning is all about experimentation.

yeah My female isn't too too big so I will be doing the whole plant forsure, I would rather have lots of seeds. than a bit of weed. yeah seeds can get expensive. plus I don't like ordering from Web sites cuz in the city here Toronto there are so many stores you can walk in a buy em and not have to wait for them to send it IF THEY SEND EM AT ALL before you wemail them saying WHATS UP WITH MY ORDER, But they are limited as to what strains they have. I picked up BlueBerry x Haze Special yesterday for 60CAD 10 seeds
I am going to bag up a branch of my male to see if I can take pollin and keep it in a bag, to later put ina vial and store for safe keeping.
Storing in the frezzer sounds right cuz when I get Alergy tested they keep the pollins in a fridge, then take some out and apply them to my skin to test if im alergic.
If it works Stinky Ill send you a vial full. I think it would make it out that way. YOu said the UK right?

No, I'm in the US.
That's why it's twitchy.
If you have a preferred addy to send to, email it to me and I'll send you a 'belated birthday' gift. You'll see the method for getting seeds out safely in the mail that way.

KD man, I'd love to find a store in Toronto that sells seeds for 60 bucks a pack..... would it be possible for you to give me some names of stores and street names :D
M
Just walk around the tourist part of Yonge street, bunch of stores.
$60 a pack, just depends on the strain.
Look for Sacred Seed, I think it's on Dundonald, just off Yonge.

Don't have to much time to talk. here are the picts.,..
The male keepos getting sooo Tall so I keep having to cut him back. his leaves are also going yellow. Well only the older leaves. All the newer ones are green.
The female is a hurting unit, Cuz she was ina small pot for so long since I have transplanted her she has nbot taken in all the water in the pot yet. So I am still waiting to water her, but she is growing. she has moved right up to the light well. I keep taking pollin dust in my hand and kinda dabbing it on her to try and get it on....!@!!!!!
take it easy!

I can't tell from the pics- you have to look REALLY closely and compare the calyxes- if they are getting unusually fat, you've got a little seed forming in there. Kind of like you can't tell if a girl is pregnant for the first couple months (except for her odd food cravings! :D).

So Today I did a clean up on the Cab,
inspected my plant and saw it has suffered a bit of a burn, Maybe a Nute burn or a heat burn from not being able to have the door open over the weekend. Due to a guest staying over.
It might possibly be a nute burn because all of its fan Leaf stems are dark purpal. And some leafs are burnt on the tips ever so slightly. Im pretty sure this is somthing to be concerned about.
But more importantly I noticed a small catapiller style bug on a big fan leaf. the same kind I have seen in my box before. Only less developed these are extreamly small tiny lava. I have seen them in a slighly bigger state and they are a more yellowy orange colour. Im not sure what they are at all.
Because this plant is only for seeds I should be ok to spray it with neem oil right? because im not going to smoke the leaves I just want the seeds.
I hope these problems dont turn into bigger ones.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Happy Halloween!!
kd
stinkyattic
11-01-2006, 02:44 PM
Go ahead and neem it if you don't plan on smoking it, or you can use pyrethrum which breaks down VERY fast and can be used on food crops.
Those little caterpillar things- do they look like little blonde splinters? Thrip larvae! Yuck. Luckily IMO the easiest to control of the 'big 4' (thrips, greenhouse whiteflies, aphids, and mites) that dirt growers have to suffer with.
kdspecial
11-01-2006, 02:59 PM
yes they do look like that.. Yuck I hate those fukers. U sprayed with neem oil today hopefully it kills em I will cntinue to spray every few days. And I may look into that other pest spray you speak of.
the purpal stems on the leaves is that somthing to be concerned with you think Stinky?
I was thinking maybe a Mg Definicy from my city Tap water. Cuz on the tips on some of my big fan leaves are standing up. Like not the end tip of the leaf the little ridges on the outer edge of the whole leaf. I was looking at some piictures and its seemed very similar. I have seen this on some other plants I have grown in the past as well.
But I am sure when the plant is heat stressed it can cause this too. So it could just be that.
Do you think adding 1/2 table spoon / Gallon of epsom salt to my water could hurt my plant if Mg deficency isn't the problem?
thansk for all your help Stinky,, Its always good to see your name in the posts....
kd
stinkyattic
11-01-2006, 03:33 PM
Yeah, heat stress can cause 'cupping' of the leaves. If anything you could use a touch of N, but late in flower, not to bother.
I'd use a little less Epsom... like 1/4 teaspoon/gal... enough to do the trick and not hurt if it isn't a problem.
Keep on forgetting to ask, is your new avatar a sled dog in its travel house?
Awww!

Unfortunatly the plant suffered a bit of stress from when A friend came over and I couldn't open the cab up to let some cool air in. cuz he was sleeping on the couch in the same room. It seems to be recovering now. It has started to regrow white hairs and such.
My question is should I be able to see the pods opening up with the seeds in them. I can see one POD totally open with a seed in it and its dark brown. This seed a few weeks ago was neon Green.
All the PODS are starting to open up it seems. should I wait untill most of the pods totally open up and I can see the seeds? Or do the POds never fully open up? Its going on about 7 weeks now.
I can only see two fully openeed Pods one has a dark brown seed in it and the other has a neon green seed.
Any help is greatly appreciated

Well today i chopped a small top off my plant and was rewarded.
3 days ago i started to notice dark seeds poking out of the plant. I grabbed tweezers and pulled 5 seeds out I was so happy. I germinated one and it has sprouted. Tonight I chopped the small top off and pulled about 30 to 40 brown seeds out and 10 green ones that didn't look good. I also found some deformed seeds. There are still so many more seeds that need to ripen.
This plant has taken some abuse I honestly didn't have any idea if it would pull through this harsh treatment :stoned: . This is a first for me. Thanks for all the help everyone.
This process well worth the learning experiment.

now you need to remove all traces of pollen from your grow area - if you are not very clean, then the pollen in the air and on dusty surfaces will pollenate every one of your future crops.

Thanks for the Tips. This plant still has a lot of seeds that need to ripen though. So I wont be cleaning just yet. another week or so then ill be wiping it down well.
Thanks for the info though. can never bee too safe. I actully saved a couple branches form the Male and left it in a ziplock in the freezer, When i get some more females im gonna try and see if the pollin will reactivate once thawed. and I will try to pollinate a branch or two of a different strain. ill post the results if it works.
Thanks all again..

usually you can see a reddish area where the seeds have pollinated the bud, it only takes a spek of pollen to pollinate.

i have a quick qustion if you pollinate seeds dont it make it a higher risk of getting males?
why wouldnt you just do clones of them female and have as many females as you want and have a non stop suply of plants all year long?
someone please update my knowledge if you dont mind
Females produce the seeds that are either female or male. Seeds you can store but clones you have to keep growing. And I know that seeds dont pollonate, lack of edit button sucks....

i have a quick qustion if you pollinate seeds dont it make it a higher risk of getting males?
Yes. That is correct.
If you pollinate a female to get seeds, you will get offspring a littel under 50% male.
If you don't pollinate, you get no offspring, therefore you get 0 males.
Hence, the higher risk.
:D
Dude... time for some basic Biology, eh?
