Still waiting to pull this plant because you all suggested it. Someone let me know something. Thanks, weedhopper

Tips of pistils beginning to turn brown, trichomes look cloudy. You're close, but without seeing some more pics of the plants its difficult to be more exact. I'd say one more week if a gun was put to my head.....

pistils can change color from the environment too and generally not a good gauge for judging your harvest...most of us use trichome color and overall condition of the plant to judge when its time is up...along with a sample bud from the lower branches. but looking at your pic i'd have to say you have a few more weeks...like mid-late october.

beautiful looking plant. follow m.g.'s advice and wait a few weeks you will be happy you did. it should be totally sugar coated by then and alot fatter.try not to think about it so much and be patient, it's worth it.

Depending on where you live you may have to worry about frost, other than that I would wait another two weeks. Get a good magnifying glass and check the tricomb color, thats the best way to go. Where I live I end up letting it go until first frost and even then I sometimes would like one more week or so. That's my story, and I will say I wish my plants looked like yours do, keep it up what ever you are doing.

frost will not harm your harvest...yes, a hard frost will kill the plant and means it's time to bring it in beyond all doubt but still nothing to fear. a light frost will kill off the tips and those can be harvested but the rest of the plant will keep ripening...especially once it warms up again like it's doing now! but once damage has been done the damaged parts will not recover...and cooler temps (below 40) tends to make many strains turn purple-ish.

Very nice cola ! Well done sweetheart. A few tips on harvesting since I noticed you hung the complete plant up. You can do that, but its much easier to chop and trim immediately after pulling your girls because the plant is still turgid. Once the plant wilts its much more work to do a nice trim of the colas. Hang the branches on a string line or similar in a dark aerated spot with temp around 20 deg. C. They should dry sufficiently in about 10 days to strip the buds off the branches and store them in an airtight container. How do you know when the plants are dry enough ? Try snapping a stem. If it snaps with a 'crackle' then the buds are dry enough. If you try to snap the stem and it simply bends or there is no snap sound then continue drying. Curing : Open your airtight containers every day for about 15 minutes and let air get at the buds. Do this for about 3 weeks and you will have very nice, well-cured buds. The buds will keep curing for a couple of months, after which they are 'done', so to speak.
There were a couple of posts criticizing me for saying that buds are ready when pistils turn brown. I only said this because in a previous thread I'm sure you said you had no magnifying glass to check the trichomes. You CAN use pistil color as a rough guide, but as the posters said, trichome color is the precise way to do it using a 30x or greater loupe.

Thank you, Houdini!! Yea, I definitely did this plant the hard way, my hands got pretty tired!! I'll know better on the next one we pull!! Also, we did get a 30X handheld microscope but we both think it's a piece of crap! We'll get a 30X magnifying(sp?)glass. Weedhopper

if you're planning of curing your bud you don't want to let it dry too long on the line. a few days will do or as soon as the exterior feels dry, then put them in your curing bin.
and letting them hang for a few hours before beginning the trim will make it easier to get at the base of the leaf stems for a cleaner trim. they get limp and are easier to maneuver...

nice job...!

I can't believe it! From what I've sampled, I don't even get high. How could a plant look so good and not get you high?

how does the bud smell??

weedhopper
10-06-2006, 09:35 PM
Hey phillykid, I think the buds smell kinda piney. We have only smoked the lower buds, could that be it? Will the top buds be better maybe?

you need to let your plants dry out more, a lot of the THC hasnt lost its moisture and therefore is not psychoactive. you also need to cure the buds to get rid of that chlorophyl taste, nice plant btw

the tops will be better if they were allowed to ripen longer. judging from that middle pic, it was picked a few weeks too soon. it might be just a lower potency strain too. it does look nice but looks have nothing to do with potency, neither does moisture have anything to do with psychoactive properties.

you also need a pair or small, pointy scissors (i use mustache trimmers or small hem removing sewing scissors) to get in close with the trimming. once more of that greenery gets removed it'll be tastier.
