if you do, you'll have the best luck and safer trip if you dress like a college student and hold a sign with your destination clearly printed on it, along with a 'please'. it's been a few decades since i hitched long distances but always felt safer on the open highways verses the city but never had a hard time in either in the 1,000's of miles i've covered using my thumb, magic marker and piece of cardboard! it can be quite an adventure and easy on the wallet!

I agree with some here, you're a girl, a young girl, your chances of getting raped just went up 90%. It's sick and sad, yes, but I wouldn't risk it. Just take a bus, or find a friend with a car. There are a lot of weird people out there who will hurt you and take advantage of you.

If you still live your folks and really are 17, you won't get far as you are underage, they will find you, and bring you right back home. It happens everyday. I just hope you're leaving as choice, not a run away.
