Metella et milissa e vila mane discesserunt. Metella filio togam quaerebat. Metella et ancilla, postquam forum intraverunt, tabernam conspexerunt, ubi togae optimae erant. Multae feminae erant in taberna. servi gladiatoribus tunicas ostendebant. mercator in media taberna stabat. mercator erat Marcellus. Marcellus, postquam Metellam vidit, rogavit,
"quid quaeris, domina?"
"Togam quaero," inquit Metella. " ego filio donum quareo, quod diem natalem celebrat."
"ego multas togas habeo," respondit meracator
mercator servis signum didit. servi mercatori togas celeriter tradiderunt. Marcellus feminis togas ostendit. Metella et ancilla togas inspexerunt..

No idea ma' friend! But I once slept with a girl who could speak Latin, at the time of ,ahem, she was at university translating Ceasars text into English!:D My older brother also studied Latin as his second language. I wish I'd had the opportunity to study Latin as it's everywhere!

Peace

Buddy, and what'd it say?

No, Latin hasn't died, but it's evolved. I can speak two forms of modern Latin.

But my grammar at it sucks and my spelling is worse...

Latin is fun.. and hard. My father taught Latin at a University but never really went into detail in teaching it to me.

I did pick up a few things though ;)

Interesting idea for a thread.. just remember we do try to keep things english and understandable around here and don't generally allow non english posting.

Remaneo Profundus,

Bob.

Well then I guess you have to be stuck with the title of Multilingual Mod for the nerds (just kidding!) who enjoy posting in Latin :D

After three years of Latin and just after sitting my Junior Cert exam in it in June i should be able to translate this :| ... Luckly i'm still waiting for my results :D

"Metella and Milissa departed from the villa early. (er couldn??t make sense of that? Thought mane meant to remain? Anyways!)
Metella sought a toga for his son. Afterwards, Metalla and a maid went into a shop in the forum and they caught sight of the best (superlative) toga.
There were many women in the shop and there were servants showing gladiators tunics. The shopkeeper stood in the middle of the shop. The shopkeeper was Marcellus. Afer Marcellus saw Metallus he asked:
?? What is it you seek master? (sir) ??
?? I seek a toga,? said Metallus. ?? I seek it for my son because we are celebratig his birthday?.
??I have many togas,? responded the shopkeeper.
The shopkeeper then gave a signal to a servant. The servant quickly gave toga??s to the shopkeeper. Marcellus showed the toga to the women. Metellus and the maid inspected the toga?.."

Er, it's probably wrong but yeah, whatever.
I'm wrecked :rasta: and have too mcuh time on my hands. :D

Moi je suis francophone aussi. Je ne fume que les bonnes herbes; c'est parce que je suis trop defonce maintenant.

(Me i'm french-speaking also. I only smoke the good herbs ; that's why i am too stoned now).

Actually, French and Spanish are much more closely related to each other than either one is to Italian. French, Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan and a few other minor Romance languages belong to the Western branch, while the rest (most notably Italian and Romanian) belong to the Eastern branch. If you really want to see what a language halfway between French and Spanish looks like, check out Catalan (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catalan_language).

as trhe modern one i dont know about..
Sure you do. You see, Latin never "died", that is, there was no time when all the Latin speakers started speaking foreigners' languages for some reason. Instead, the various Latin dialects went their own ways after the fall of the Roman Empire, and gradually over time they became so different that they could no longer understand each other. We know these modern dialects of Latin as Portuguese, Spanish, Catalan, French, Italian and Romanian.

What about the Basque dialect?
I know it's heavy on the French, but does it also have any Arabic/ North African influence from the Moors?

Defonce- that's a good word to add to the French I learned in school! :D

Oneironaut

Basque is a language in its own right, and it is the only European language that doesn't appear to be related to any other language we know of. It is probably the only surviving remnant of a language family that existed in Europe before the Celtic, Germanic and Roman peoples invaded.
