A poster at FreeRepublic,said this in response to an article about Iran announcing the successful developement and testing,of a guided,2000 lb pound bomb:

"I do not fear the Iranian military machine. Its order of battle during the Iran/Iraq war in the 80's was to march grade school age youths ahead of their gunmen (I won't honor them as "soldiers") as human shields, resulting in the deaths of thousands of boys. Iran will fight the next war with equal incompetence and immorality.

What I fear is the cost of the inevitable war with Iran. The Democrats and some Republicans believe that we can negotiate peace with Iran, when Iran has made clear that it only wants "pieces", i.e. of Israel, Iraq, Europe, and even the USA. The next time you experience, for example, an attack in the wild by a dozen rabid wolves, try negotiating with them. They know what they want, they know what they're going to get, and they really appreciate the fact that you slowed down so that they could catch you, and that you set your weapons on the ground so that you can negotiate with them. The result will be predictable.

Had I the money, here's the "Daisy" type advertisement I'd run before the next election: I'd show class the pictures from 200 large U.S. high schools, with the calendar in the background. As the calendar spun forward, month after month, I'd mark "X's" over the pictures of more and more young men. I'd state that "this country is at war ... and these young men are dying ... one by one."

Of course, the antiwar crowd would cheer on the message, "Yes!!", hoping the country will finally understand their message. At the END of the commercial, however, we explain that these deaths are in the future. The lives of these young men, now still alive, are being snuffed out by the inaction of the current President, and the feckless, suicidal opposition of the Democrats who oppose any and all means of self-defense.

The message is this: With every month that passes, with every additional bomb (Nuclear or otherwise) Iran builds, and every additional missile, aircraft, tank, and bunker Iran invests in, another young man's life in California, Texas, Arkansas, or perhaps Maine, is mortgaged. The payment will come due regardless of what America does, but it will certainly be higher as we wait, and negotiate, and contemplate, and politicize, and postulate, but do not fight.

War will stop Iran. War will destroy Iran, and the Islamic Jihad she supports. Sooner or later, both the political left and the right in American and Europe will join forces for self-preservation. Predictably, the burden of the fighting and dying will fall on American boys, like my 18 year old son. I'm ex-Navy, and old "cold warrior". I know the way of the world. Fascism dressed up in religious garments is still fascism, and must be defeated for America to survive. And, the war will belong to my son's generation; they will pay the debt we passed on to them with their own blood.

The only question is, how many more boys do we lose because of our "virtue" of delaying the fight?"

The problem with the latest PR campaign is who and what, precisely, are the "fear" messages warning us about? Is it Osama? Is it Iran? Is it Hammas or Hezbollah? You say you're all for freedom of religious choice but it seems to me you support this freedom only if the "choice" goes along with what you choose.

I too, have lived overseas in a country with a radically different culture and set of beliefs. While I was there I learned the language and immersed myself in their culture. I didn't just hang out with the local expat community which is what normally happens. What I found is that many things that we naturally assume everyone wants weren't wanted there. Aspects of their culture which we may find totally bizarre, or even upsetting, were perfectly normal and happily accepted there. And, aspects of our culture which we find normal and accepted were considered just as bizarre by them.

Bottom line, different strokes for different folks. There is no right or wrong, only different.

Real far leftists (communists, anarchists and the like) emphasize rational critical thinking and have, for the most part, rejected the 9/11 conspiracy theories since there is no real evidence for them. We don't just make up things about our enemies and expect you to take our word for it; we are strict materialists. 9/11 conspiracy theories, you will find, are almost exclusively the product of reformist pro-capitalist liberals who dislike Bush and swallow up anything that makes him look bad.

Regarding the Pentagon crash in particular, the U.S. military, headed by NORAD (North American Air Defense), had one hour and 23 minutes to protect the nation's capital after the first loss of communication with U.S. ground-control by an airliner on 9/11/01.

American Airlines Flight 11 lost communication with Air Traffic Control at Boston's Logan Airport at 8:14 Eastern Daylight Time. Federal Aviation Agency regulations require Air Traffic Control to immediately request military intercept in the event of loss of radar contact or radio communication with any aircraft. Yet the Pentagon was not defended by jets from Andrews Air Force Base (two Squadrons of F-16 or F-18 fighter-jets at this Base less than 15 miles from the Pentagon and White House were specifically charged with defense of Washington, D. C.), nor was it defended by the F-16s from Langley Air Force Base that somehow were flown at 1/6 of their 1500 miles-per-hour top speed, nor was it defended by its own anti-aircraft emplacements, when it was struck at 9:37 EDT.

Regarding other responses, the F-15s that were flown the 188 miles from Otis Air National Guard Base on Cape Cod, Massachusetts to lower Manhattan on the 9/11/01 morning were flown at less than 1/3 of their top speed of 1875 miles per hour, after NORAD finally scrambled them at 8:44 EDT, and these fighter jets were similarly late in intercepting United Airlines Flight 175, a Boeing 767, before it crashed into the World Trade Centers South Tower at 9:03 EDT.

That I can believe. I still firmly believe that the attack was planned and carried out by Al Qaeda. I don't think that there were any bombs in the towers or any of that other nonsense.

That being said, there is no doubt that George W Bush has benefited enormously, certainly more so than Al Qaeda, from the attack. I can't imagine that he'd be in the White House now if it hadn't happened. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that he had some additional prior knowledge of the attack and, not realizing the extent of it, decided to look the other way. I guess you didn't see the news today GS, your peaceful Muslims released a video tape today (from 2000 I believe) showing OBL (the one that didn't finance 911) meeting with some of the hijackers (that weren't there on the planes on 911) all having a real "murdering Muslim" love fest. The hijackers were saying how happy they were to be killing themselves, in the name of their God. (and murdering us Americans)

You should turn on the TV once in a while see whats happening in the real world.

Al-Jazeera airs pre-9/11 bin Laden tape

CAIRO, Egypt --Al-Jazeera broadcast Thursday a previously unshown video of the preparations for the Sept. 11 attacks, in which al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden is seen meeting with some of the planners in an Afghan mountain camp.

The station said that bin Laden also is shown greeting some of the hijackers, although their faces were not clear and it was not immediately known which are purportedly shown.

The video included the last wills and testaments of hijackers Wail al-Shehri and Hamza al-Ghamdi.

Al-Jazeera did not say how it obtained the video, which was produced by As-Sahab, al-Qaida's media branch. Islamic militant Web forums said the entire video would be posted soon on the Internet. Such advertisements in the past have come a day or two before the video appears on the Web.

Thursday's was the fourth in a series of long videos that al-Qaida has put out to memorialize the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Center, said Ben Venzke, head of IntelCenter, a private U.S. company that monitors militant message traffic and provides counterterrorism intelligence services for the American government.

The previous ones were issued in April and September 2002 and September 2003, each showing video from the planning of the suicide hijackings and farewell statements from some of the hijackers, Venzke said.

In the latest video, bin Laden is shown sitting outside with his former lieutenant Mohammed Atef and Ramzi Binalshibh, another suspected planner of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Venzke said the scenes had not been previously broadcast.

Atef, also known as Abu Hafs al-Masri, was killed by a U.S. airstrike in Afghanistan in 2001. Binalshibh was captured four years ago in Pakistan and is in U.S. custody. President Bush announced plans to put him on military trial.

The video shows bin Laden in a dark robe and white headgear, strolling through the camp and greeting dozens of followers, some masked, and many carrying automatic weapons. A voice-over narration praises the fighters and refers to the camp being "on the soil of Kandahar" -- a city in southern Afghanistan.

The footage shows scenes of training at the camp. Masked militants perform martial-arts kicks or learn how to break the hold of someone who grabs them from behind. Several militants are shown practicing with fold-out knives.

Venzke said the footage was part of a video he expected would be more than an hour long, based on previous releases.

He said the full version of the video was believed to include a message from Azzam al-Amriki, the nom de guerre of Adam Yehiye Gadahn, an American who the FBI says has associated with al-Qaida. Gadahn appeared in an al-Qaida video released last week, in which he called on Americans to convert to Islam.

The full video also likely includes messages from bin Laden or his deputy, Ayman al-Zawahri, though they may not be new, Venzke said, without elaborating on why he believed that.

"They produce long videos like these not just for 9/11, but for any significant events they feel warrant their attention," Venzke said.

One aim is to boost recruitment, but such videos have other purposes -- "to speak to their supporters, to raise morale within their own group, to facilitate fundraising, and to serve as a psychological attack," he said.

The footage also shows glimpses of daily life in the camp, with men chopping wood and cutting up vegetables for dinner.

Al-Shehri and al-Ghamdi are each shown speaking to the camera, their images superimposed over pictures of the crumbling World Trade Center towers and the burning Pentagon, as well as a model of a passenger jet.

They both say Muslims must stand up and fight the West.

"If jihad now is not an obligation (on Muslims), when will it be?" said al-Shehri, pointing to attacks on Muslims in Bosnia, Afghanistan and Chechnya.

"If we are content with being humiliated and inclined to comfort, the tooth of the enemy will stretch from Jerusalem to Mecca, and then everyone will regret on a day when regret is of no use," al-Ghamdi said.
