Alright here's the deal, I was hungry and I thought eating some veggies with some ranch dip would be pretty tasty.
I love celery so I decided to get some for this little feast...only to find out that it's all sloppy? Wtf happened? You guys ever seen soft..sloppy celery before? Is it still good to eat? I tasted it and it seems fine.. the consistency is just a little sketchy though.

I wouldn't eat it. Celery is supposed to stay a little crisp even when it's been cooked a bit. Soggy celery sounds like the moisture in the stalk is leaving and collecting on the outside. The only thing I can think of other than salt is old age or some other chemical reaction. Celery is cheap. Chuck it and get some fresh. Also, how was it stored? Was it in an air tight bag, or loosely wrapped and what type of bag material? I keep picturing rotten soggy celery in a plastic zip lock bag. Doesn't sound very tasty at all.

yes, well.. it hasn't hit your system yet.
please let us know if you drop dead...
oh wait, that won't work...
and here is your useless piece of celery information for the day:
In making movies, sound artists break celery stalks into a microphone to represent the sound of breaking bones.

If it's not too bad to cook with, you could use it in ton of sauce/soup/stocks etc..When used in a mirepoix, it could end up in pizza sauce, or clam chowder. I've never cared for raw celery, but you just can't cook without it. It's a great aromatic.

Woah cool, could come in handy someday!

Yea, I can imagine how gay that might sound. You'd think someone so rich could buy so much weed thus increasing their creativity level to something a little more fancy that chicken noodle soup rhymes.. anyway I'm going to find that song just 'cause I'm bored. :P
And benagain, nah it wasn't rotten at all. It looked a little darker than "usual celery" but it was still crispy as hell. That's why I ate it.. it was just in the fridge in a loose bag, been in there for no longer than a few days.
All in all, it was all tasty and I feel all healthy. ;)

HAhaha you know it. Wonder why I wrote "always" in that sentence.. I don't think I've ever done that before. Maybe I always will, from now on?
Interesting.

Soggy, floppy celery is the worst. Here's a celery tip I once read in a newspaper column called Hints from Heloise, a housekeeping advice column. When you get fresh celery home from the grocery store, take it out of the little plastic sleeve, if they've put it in one at the store, and wrap it in aluminum foil, covering all explosed surfaces of the celery. Store it in the crisper drawer of the fridge wrapped in that foil. It'll keep the celery crisp for up to two weeks. I've tried this and it works great!
If you're going to use the celery within a day or two, another way to keep it crisp is to clean it and trim the leaf and root ends, then stand the trimmed stalks at least halfway immersed in a container of cold water in the refrigerator. That keeps it hydrated and cold, and it stays crisp. You do have to dry it off a bit after you get it back out of the water, but at least your celery won't have gone soggy on you.

I usually abstain from buying exploded celery parts.. but if I ever do I'll try it out!
Thanks for the advice, it usually isn't a problem but I just got back from a trip and I guess the roomie didn't eat any of the celery so it got a little softy. Will definitely remember this one though.

I made up a new word!! Explosed! Pardon my typo. That could indeed be rough on your insides. Especially undetonated parts of the vegetable.

Cut the bottom edge off and put it in cold water standing up and it will regain its crispness in a short while guarenteed.
And like birdgirl said, store it that way next time you buy it and itll stay crisp.
peace.
