I was wondering if anybody suffers from a mental illness and what they smoke to alleviate the condition somewhat. I'm interested if anyone self medicates and what strains they use.

I used to smoke for severe depression and it worked great.
I'm not sure what strain i smoked...
I just smoked whatever i could get.

It severely depends on the mental illness.

Personally, I think they can either severely help, or severely hurt the user. Be careful.

well i have by b.a. in psyschology and am going to gradschool for my Ph. D and live in california. Pot can be good at relieving anxiety and helping with eating disorders (because of the munchie factor). THC is technecially a mood stabolizer (like lithium or topamx) and can help people with bipolar. I have bipolar and weed most deffinently helps me. It can also (but less likely) be used for depression. I don't think it really matters what strain you use, unless you want to use beefore bed then something sleepy. If you need me to elaborate just ask. hope i have been helpful. Oh yah dirty ditch weed is not good to medicate with and you should always see some sort of doctor and not just medicate your self, you may need real help. Talking to a psycholigist could be helpful, also check out the legistation in your state who knows you may qualify for medical THC. Psychatrist may also be helpful when assessing if safe to use with othe drugs:thumbsup: :rasta: :D

I have a few things I smoke weed for, but mainly for anxiety and insomnia.

I haven't come across anyone selling particular strains, it's just weed.

I have schizophrenia. If you have this condition and it's out of control then I would say stay away from weed.. especially if you have panic attacks. If however you are mature and strong enough then it can be an enlightening experience. From my experience I found that I could become more aware of my thoughts and how they effect me... and then control them. I'm off the weed now but I've kept what it has taught me.

Be wise:thumbsup:

BHOUNCY: well done for getting control over your thoughts, AND having the willpower to get off the weed. :-) Good on ya!

Depression. Weed medicated it permanently. It just gave me the power to look at life another way. Voila.
(ps. That prozac shit did NOTHING)

I have a far too long list of mental illnesses to mention.
Let's just say insane asylums won't accept me.

yeah... they obviously aren't serious enough to hold you back from posting normal things on a forum now are they. If you really needed to stay at an insane asylum, they'd take you.

I think that pure Indica, or hash made from it, is usually best for people with psychicatric, neurological, digestive, insomnia and other similar chronic problems. Unfortunately, without buyers' clubs, they are very difficult to obtain - so hybrid strains of sativa and indica will have to do. I guess growing it yourself is the best idea, but I haven't gotten around to that.
