Will someone with good knowledge of CFL's help me with a plan I want to set up. I want to have 7 plants in veg. under CFL's until they are ready to be put under MH for flowering. My question is: How many CFL's do I need for adaquate lighting for these 7 plants and how many watts each? The space is 3x2ft. Thanks-you!

your planning on flowering under a metal halide? halides are more for vegging .. hps is what you want for flowering... and for a box that size you would need about 18,000 lumens.. so probably about 6 or 7 42 watters would set you straight...remember the higher the kelvin temp the better.. something like 6500 or around there is good...hope this helps..

Highger the Kelvin temp. the more blue it is right? or was it the other way around.

yeah you want as much blue as you can for vegging... and as much red as you can for flowering..

Also another important point is the positioning of the cfls, your want to maximize the light going to each plant.

I suggest next time using a bulb from FarmTek DOT com and using their 125watt compact fluoro that costs around 36 bucks a bulb.

It has a "medium" styled base (incandescent) so you can screw in to a regular socket and eliminate the need for a mogul socket and cord setup.

This isn't a plug for them it's a suggestion because of the kelvin temp of the bulb (6500K) and the lumen you get from 2 can veg 10 small 6 inch pots for a couple weeks preparing for the MH lumen to come.

I used a space 3L x 2w x 3h and found that 4 of the 125w bulbs were excellent as long as the heat is ventilated.

heres what i use
2- 3 socket fixture from lowes
http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=122251-1811-VB1-3WW&lpage=none
6 -26watt CFLs = 156watts

this fits for my space
at lowes they have fixtures that go up to at least 5 sockets

you can get decent results wioth CFLs but if the big buds come from using HPS

you can flower with a MH you wont get big buds but the quality of the buds will be tons better MH really enhances the potency

i really cant explain how or why its like that but MH makes your bud more potent ask someone who grows with just a MH vs hps
