View Full Version : Is it too early for HPS?

Hey guys,

I decided to try out my HPS and installed it in my cabinet. The thing is that my plants aren't even two weeks old so I'm thinking it might be too early or something for such a strong light.

So do you guys think I should put the crappy cfl tube back in for a while until they're a bit bigger or just leave the HPS?

Thanks

How many watts is that HPS pushing? Not many people use their HPS this early because it makes the plant stretch which is not great at this early stage...

It's a 400w but I thought it was better than the 15w cfl tube. It's just that I thought the plants can't take all the light yet.

i use hps all the way through and my plants do not stretch you have to keep those lights as close as possible without burning them put your hand under the light and if you dont get burned neither will the plants

Thanks guys, I think I'll go with both then.

For the moment I've just got a computerfan that's producing some air movement inside the cabinet. I don't have a fresh air input but the plants are small, the cabinet is temporary and I produce some co2 from time to time in the glass bottle so I guess it's allright.

If I leave the HPS I'll have to have a cold air fan blowing on the plants though cause it's really producing an incredible amount of heat, more than I thought it would.

Again thanks for the advise

Yes put the fluoro (the more the better) and keep it until they veg for at least 6 weeks (depending on ur height), after that u can flower using the hps...or use both so they can take both spectrums, either way will be best then just to have the hps.

The HPS is at 40cm which must be about 1.3 feet or something and I also put the fluoro back in. They seem to have grown more yesterday than they normally do, I think they're going from seedling to veg state now.

By grown more I don't mean stretched but bigger leaves.

Can u post some pics on the setup with the fluoro on?Its real interesting to watch plants development under both light spectrums......:stoned: :stoned:

Hey sorry for the late reply, I can't post pics cause I removed the HPS again, I couldn't control the temp in my cabinet so I'll have to install some cooling fans first.

i hear good things about plants that use both all the way through...15w isnt nearly enough though...the 400w hps is probally plenty ucould prob grow 5 plants under that thing...

usually people use cfls during veg and hps/mh during flower

just keep in mind thats tempuatre control is very important and a 400w hps in a small cabinet will need good ventilation, stick a fan in there or soemthing and u should be fine

Thanks, I'll be working on that fan asap so I can use both lamps.
