hotels are pretty expensive now since the introduction of the euro
if you have a credit card: for hotels check www.bookings.nl it's the easiest way to book from abroad with hotels from 0 star to 5 star. you normally pay first night on card the rest at hotel. budget hotels always get booked-out fast.
a cool place that i've never been able to stay at(it's popular and small) is the 'hemp hotel amsterdam' prices are about the same as a bad budget hotel if you got 2 sharing. you get to stay in a hemp room sleeping under hemp sheets you get a vegi/hemp b'fast. they only accept c.c payment. tel. 0031 (0)20 625 4425
if you wanna chance it and just turn up and look for a hotel try 'vvv'(tourist info) on platform 2 of centraal station, there's also a 'vvv' outside the station to the left but platform 2 is normally quicker. on the 'damrak'(1 min walk from station) there's also 'amsterdam hotel service' hotel prices around 50 euro per person per night are normal but the best prices are bookings.nl.
as for coffeeshops, we have a vast choice.
but you wan't go far wrong if you try these:-
dutch flowers , singel 387
some of the best weed/hash in the dam
goa, kloveniersburgwal 42
try the jack herrer or temple ball
amnesia, herengracht 133
smoke and see the ladys of the night at the same time
tweedy, vondelstraat 104
go here if you don't mind paying a high price for top quality. try (super) creme melana, 20,15 euro gram respective
there are a lot of coffeeshops on the 'oudezijds voorburgwal' but the greenhouse at number 191 is pretty cool with a good selection of dope
need anymore info, let me know

Rotterdam is very nice. I was born there. :)
If you have like a week in Holland, you can see the pretty much the entire country in that time. I used to bike to Rotterdam to Amsterdam, there and back, in less than a day. Holland can fit into the provice of Alberta, 51 times! Very small country.
I suggest staying at a hostol. Unless you plan to do more than just sleep, but if you're just going to be sleeping, find a hostol to stay at. They can be as cheap as $20 a night.

That's bullshit dude! This time of year is very expensive. Try around October through Feburary--the ticket prices come waaayyy down. Avoid Christmas though, since it's expensive at Christmas and New Years.

this place is ideal for you, public transport is fantastic in a'dam. buy a 'stripenkaart' for the bus you can get them all over the place t-station,vvv,tabaconist etc. there's also an 'i amsterdam card' but you need to seriously use it to get your moneys worth busses, musemums etc.
for a chilled out smoke head for the vondelpark area, museum district or the jordaan district. the dam's pretty chilled in the day, it's at night when the freaks come out to play. :stoned:

hallo alles goed
yes hostels are cheap but most only let you stay two nights, you sleep 12 to a room and there's never any real way of knowing if someone is going to steal your favourite pair of jeans or whatever. a hotel is safer and doesn't cost a lot more. off season i can get a room for two for 50-60 euro a night.

rotterdam has great nightlife but apart from that i don't like the place. utrecht, nijmegen, maastricht, tilburg, breda, leiden, there's loads of nice places to go in holland. if you get good weather check-out the beaches scheveningen, zandvoort, or travel down to vlissingen, middleburg.
what ever you do have fun and don't buy from street dealers.

coffeeshops are very strict on under 18's.
it's the law to carry id at all times. and if you look under 20 they will ask for it. the best thing he can do is smoke where your staying or in the park
amsterdam has many museums the best are:_
vincent van goch museum
rijksmuseum
stedelijk museum
a'dam historical museum
nemo science museum
the sex museum
the hash marihana hemp museum
heineken brewery
condom museum
just to name a few
the sex and hash museum you can basiclly see all over a'dam and are a bit expensive.
heineken no longer gives all-you-can-drink tours. you pay 7.50(may have gone up) the cost of 3 drinks, you get to tour at your lesiure and get a free gift at the end.
there also more obscure museums like:_
electric ladyland
the torture museum

this is absolute b/s.
the closest this came to being reality was 2 years ago when 2 'dutch' guys were refused sale in 'smokey' coffeeshop, they were told 'we don't serve dutch here', and i don't even think that was true.

Maybe I should try to book my ticket months in advance so it will be cheap, what is a good amount of days to stay there and everything?..It would be really cool to get a group from Texas to go or something, I just know much about amsterdam. But i know its beautiful, I want to go for the sites and the smoke shops and to just hang out..
What does everyone think i would spend on tickets if i booked in a few months in advance, even tried to go through a travel agent or something.
I really want to go.

flights from america can't be cheap. as far as i know there are no budget airlines flying to/from america, you'd have to find out the best prices on-line, not sure where to look for america.
a travel agent can be good as they can find the best priced flights, but they charge for the service. if you want to book on-line but can't find anything go to an agent, they will find you the best prices, tell them it's to much, go home and book it yourself.
as for hostels/hotels/appartments etc, the best prices are at, www.bookings.nl
i normally go to a'dam 2 times a year and stay 3 or 4 nights each time.
my favourite coffeeshop, dutch flowers, singel 387. i think it's the best in a'dam. :stoned:
