I've gone cold turkey twice, and it's rough. Best bet: friend should sleep a lot the first several days, because he won't suffer so much when he's asleep. Keep some gum around. Get a rubbing stone. Get some aspirin. And lots of food. But no alcohol, because that really makes a person want a smoke.

I've been meaning to look into how to quit. Are there any easier ways? Weaning maybe? or is Cold Turkey most effective

Ahhh, man, I'm trying to quit as we speak.
Don't be around anyone who smokes. I no longer hang out in the back where I work because pretty much every single person smokes, and it kills me to be around when someone's lighting up.
I always keep a toothpick or a pen, something of the sort in my mouth as a substitute. I'll find myself even taking a "drag" on it, holding it like I'd hold a cigarette, etc..it's sad, but it helps a bit.
I agree with what someone else recommended: sleep as much as possible the first few days, eat, and when you're awake, keep yourself busy. Try your best (it's impossible of course) not to think about a long, fresh, delicious 27. Argh.
