What is the height required to grow in a closet when you got a 400W light and want to grow the plants up to 3feet tall? I was thinking 5 feet since you need 2 feet of space between the light and the plant and the other 3 feet are for the plants.. Please help!

you also have to include 1 foot for the bucket, and depending on your ventilation system 1-2 foot distance between the light and tops of the plants

If the 400 is aircooled and you only have a few plants, you should be able to get the hood within 6-8" no problem when they are mature. They only disadvantage of lowering the light is that you decrease the size of the light pattern, but if you only have a few this will really really focus it.
You want to essentially be as close to the plant as possible without burning them. You drastically lose lumens as you raise your light. The more mature the plant, the more heat it can take. Start high and lower as they grow, then raise as they flower and grow. Unless I am trying to light a large area, I get within 4-6". This does pose the problem of having to constantly raise the lights, but with some yoyos or something its easy. Plus, its amazing when you have 8" of space between the cola and your light and you come back a few days later and they are almost laid against the glass.
