Get both of the albums mentioned above.
I personally love their live shows, so download a bunch of torrents and go wild. I just got a *fantastic* show from Providence, RI back in '93, where they first play "Sample in a Jar" for the first time. I wish I was there...
And yes, while under the influence of marijuana, Phish takes you to new and exciting places. Go with them :p

Hoist is a definite, Story of a Ghost is good as well. For a live album which is a must for Phish, Hampton Comes Alive.

Im glad someone brought Phish up I almost forgot. Today i was working and this man came in and bought all the skittles we had out on the floor then he asked me to go in the back room and get him more. He said he needed to buy $20 worth of skittles for Phish. I WTFed him.

phish is such a stereotypical stoner band. i can't stand listening to someone dick off on guitar for 8 minutes and call it a song. sure they have talent, but its just boring to me. the only song i like is "run like an antelope" and i don't even like it that much. i try to steer clear of bands like phish, pink floyd, etc. because they are so cliche and not really my style anyways.

Oh, my god! Listening to psychedelic music while doing drugs? You, my fine pioneering friend, and your fresh ideas have single-handedly ushered in a new age of pot smoking! Rejoice!

Haha, so you purposely try and stay away from stereotypical bands to create your own identity as a stoner, but in the meantime, you've joined all those people that do the same thing. No matter how good the music is, you refuse to like it because you don't want to be part of something bigger and supposedly "cliche".
Please, if you knew anything about music, you'd know these guys are unreal. What they did for the jam-band scene is amazing. Their talent is out of this world. Just listen to them, slapping out shit you thought never could be done!
Some people aren't into jam bands, though, but still, you gotta recognize talent when you see it. These boys have it, and lots and lots and lots of it.

yeah i love phish and i dontg agree at all with what dejayou says. being a guitar player, hearing an 8 minute guitar solo is great because i dunno i just can really appreciate it and yeah you kinda doing the thing where your a conformist because your noncomormist. just listen to what you like i mean what are you gonna smoke to like britney spears or something? i just like to smoke to any rock music i like wheather its a "stoner band" or not.

as a bass player for almost 4 years now, i know about music and i know that they are talented, but its just not a style that i can really get into. did you ever think that maybe i'm not trying to "create my own identity as a stoner" and just don't like the jam band style? i have no desire to listen to someone play scales for 8 minutes and call it a song (yes, i realize that is a generalization :rasta: ). it does not interest me in the slightest. it has nothing to do with "not trying to be a part of something bigger," i just get no enjoyment out of listening to it. my friends at the school i transferred from were pretty big phish fans and one time we got stoned and watched an entire live DVD and i was bored with the whole thing. a live pantera DVD may have been a different story. phish and jam bands like phish are just not my style. call me crazy i guess, but i know what i like and i don't feel like i have to listen to jam bands because i smoke weed. i suppose you think since i don't have dreads i'm fighting against something bigger too?

Well that's why I added this at the end of my post:

Different strokes for different folks! ~
