what,in your opinion,is the least number of node a plant should have before you top them?

once it has 4 to 5 nodes. Some folks may do it early, but IMO it causes to much stress, and seedlings should not be exposed to much if that is what you are using.

If you can help it I would suggest not topping but LST or other forms of training. Any form of uneccessary stress promotes male tendencies which is undesireable.

That's not entirely true. If you're clones are from 100% female origin (not from FEMINIZED seeds) then you are safe and sound. Think of topping as like trimming the hedges, the more you trim, the thicker they get.
